Trump and Clinton Could Do More to Ease Electorate’s Fears about Nuclear Weapons

2016-08-22-1471883144-6883676-The_explosion_of_the_hydrogen_bomb_Ivy_Mike1.jpg

We have a lot to fear from a Donald Trump presidency. Like whether he can be trusted with the nuclear codes. As the New York Times pointed out recently, it is not totally clear where Trump stands on using nuclear weapons. In one interview, he said they’d be a last resort. In another, he hinted that he’d consider using them in a first strike against the Islamic State and wouldn’t rule out using them in Europe.

One thing is clear: Trump has very little understanding of the issue. He has both allegedly and publicly questioned why, since we have them, we cannot use them. He could not answer a simple question about how he would prioritize America’s nuclear arsenal as President.

Members of his own party are concerned. Fifty Republican national security professionals argued in a letter that Trump’s unwillingness or inability to separate “truth from falsehood,” lack of “self-control,” impetuousness, and “erratic behavior” are “dangerous qualities in an individual who aspires to be President and Commander-in-Chief, with command of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.” Sitting Republican Senators have stayed mum about their trust in his fitness to handle U.S nuclear weapons.

A recent YouGov/HuffingtonPost poll finds that it isn’t just former government officials or his opponents who are asking questions. The public doesn’t trust Trump to handle nuclear weapons. That being said, the same poll finds that while Americans trust Hillary Clinton with nuclear weapons more than they do Trump, most still don’t trust her with them either. This begs the question: what, if anything, would increase the public’s confidence on this matter?

An LA Times story highlights that, thanks to their worries about Trump, Americans have woken up to the reality of the U.S. nuclear arsenal in way they haven’t since the end of the Cold War. His candidacy has shed light on the fact that the President has sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, with almost nothing standing in his way.

Both candidates could make one simple pledge that would be a first step in easing the public’s fear: a pledge of no-first-use.

More than two decades after the end of the Cold War, the United States still explicitly reserves the right to use a nuclear weapon first on another country. Of course, it is the only country to have done so.

In the Cold War, the United States believed it needed to threaten use of nuclear weapons to counterbalance the threat of attack by a massive Soviet conventional force. That threat is long gone and there is no reasonable scenario in which Russian conventional military steps would require a U.S. nuclear response. Even during the Cold War, the logic of first-use was questionable. China has long had a policy of no-first-use even though its adversaries have had conventional military superiority.

In today’s landscape, it is perfectly logical for the United States to declare a policy of no-first-use. The United States does not benefit from leaving open the possibility of first-use. If there is any value in nuclear weapons, this is it: they deter an attack by other countries with nuclear weapons. A no-first-use pledge does nothing to change this calculation.

Moreover, taking first-use off the table has several benefits. It would lower the risk of use by accident, miscalculation, or escalation. It may also challenge other nuclear weapons-possessing states to make this pledge, lowering the risk even further. It would also allow the United States to get rid of “first strike” weapons — such as a new nuclear-armed cruise missile – saving taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. A recent op-ed by General James Cartwright and Bruce Blair argues that the policy would allow the U.S. to get rid of our land-based ballistic missiles – saving $ 100 billion in the process.

The masses have been reawakened to the threats that stem from nuclear weapons. Little did they know, many of our dangerous policies haven’t changed much in several decades. Both Clinton and Trump should make a common-sense policy pledge of no-first-use of nuclear weapons. Not only would it lower the risk of nuclear use, it might also gain some of the public’s trust.

Will We Ever Really Know Ourselves?

When the ancient Greeks first uttered the dictum “Know thyself,” they had another choice. They could have said “Know lots of other things.” In one direction the investigation goes inward; in the opposite direction the investigation goes outward. “Know thyself” stands for something that, as far as we know, only human beings possess: self-awareness. “Know lots of other things” also points to a unique human capacity: curiosity about the outside world. I think it’s unarguable that the investigation of the outside world, as pursued by science, has gotten much, much further than self-awareness. Scientists have probed Nature in every dimension, while self-awareness hasn’t even stopped humanity from the impulse to destroy itself.

The gap between “Know thyself” and “Know Lots of other things” was sharply drawn by a current post from the back-page editor of Scientific American, Michael Shermer.  Reading his piece, “At the Boundary of Knowledge,” one comes away with a sense that science is totally triumphant. Not only has science achieved huge successes in acquiring facts and data that led to the overwhelming dominance of technology in the world. It has done something much more difficult. Quoting a recent book, The Big Picture, by Sean Carroll, a physicist from the California Institute of Technology, Shermer claims that now we can be almost certain about how all knowledge is attained. “All of the things you’ve ever seen or experienced in your life — objects, plants, animals, people — are made of a small number of particles, interacting with one another through a small number of forces.”

From this position, which we can call hardline materialism, Shermer reaches the following conclusion: “Once you understand the fundamental laws of nature, you can scale up to planets and people and even assess the probability that God, the soul, the afterlife and ESP exist, which Carroll concludes is very low.” I haven’t read Prof. Carroll’s book, but you can see Shermer, and many of his readers, dusting off their hands with a satisfied sense of “Well, that’s that.” If they are right, science has eliminated the need for “Know thyself” simply by swallowing up the whole issue of self-awareness and packing it away with particles and forces, having scaled up to planets and peoples, God and the soul.

Or there is another possibility, eloquently expressed by great pioneers of quantum physics around a century ago. Max Planck, who named the quantum, wrote, “All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent Mind. This Mind is the matrix of all matter.” Werner Heisenberg doubled down on that assertion: “The atoms or elementary particles themselves are not real; they form a world of potentialities or possibilities rather than one of things or facts.”

These insights about the mind as a primary force in Nature sound either strange, absurd, imaginary, or metaphysical to anyone pursuing the “Know lots of other things” project that gave rise to science. But they make perfect sense to the “Know thyself” project. It’s obvious on the face of it that no matter how finely you break a piano down into molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles, the facts you gain say nothing about how music is composed, nor can you get there by dissecting Mozart’s brain, which is nothing but a conglomerate of ordinary molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles, also.

In fact, there are scientists who understand the distinction and are trying to resolve it. A growing cadre of investigators has opened the door to a once-forbidden subject, consciousness.  The gist of Shermer’s article is to debunk the existence of paranormal phenomena, a very large category into which he tosses God, the soul, witchcraft, and all manner of superstitions. But such attacks from the stance of scientific atheism are premature. Until we understand how consciousness comes about, both normal and paranormal events are equally mysterious. Two observers, one claiming to see angels, the other to see nebulae and galaxies, derive their experience from totally unknown processes by which the dark, silent, mushy environment of the brain, using completely ordinary electrochemical activity, produces a three-dimensional world.

Maintaining that physics disproves, or reduces to the vanishing point, the very possibility of paranormal phenomena, Shermer’s once-over-lightly of “the horizon where the known meets the unknown” misses the main chance. Instead of beating the dead horse of scientific atheism Shermer should have considered a far more amazing current trend.

I mean the trend that places so-called supernatural phenomena on the same playing field as natural events. Consciousness is the field of all experience including the knowing of experience. This is the only irrefutable fact anyone has to work with. The inside scoop in physics and biology is that a crisis of knowledge has developed when attempting to account for the fundamental definitions of time, space, matter, energy, and life. In a cosmos ruled by dark matter and energy, where no empirical evidence exists about the origin of time, where the multiverse is pure conjecture and no one has the slightest idea how the constants that emerged from the Big Bang created the perfect scenario for life on Earth, Shermer’s brand of stubborn physicalism is not just wheezy — it’s not true to the current situation in science.

It’s time for Shermer to go back to the future and read these seminal physicists like Planck, Heisenberg, and Schrödinger, so that instead of relying upon a primitive belief that all phenomena come down to the interaction of particles, he gets into the game when it’s finally becoming interesting. “Know thyself” may be at a low point compared to ancient Greece, but it’s getting ready for a comeback that promises to change everything.

Rudy Giuliani Claims Online Videos Show Hillary Clinton Is Mentally Ill

Donald Trump campaign adviser and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani asserted that online videos exist that raise serious questions about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s mental health.

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Giuliani blamed the news media for failing to give attention to supposedly valid questions about Clinton’s psychological fitness.

Asked to explain Clinton’s lead over Trump in the polls, Giuliani argued that she has “an entire media empire” devoted to attacking Trump and ignoring her own foibles.

The media, he claimed, “fails to point out several signs of illness by her. All you’ve got to do is go online.”

Pressed for evidence of this illness by host Shannon Bream, Giuliani doubled down on unnamed internet sources.

“Go online and put down ‘Hillary Clinton illness,’ take a look at the videos for yourself,” he insisted.

In fact, there is no evidence to suggest that Clinton is psychologically unhealthy. Fake medical records circulating online claim a concussion Clinton sustained in December 2012 resulted in lasting brain damage. Clinton’s physician, Lisa Bardack, reaffirmed in an Aug. 16 note that Clinton is in “excellent health.”

Clinton campaign press secretary Brian Fallon responded to Giuliani on Twitter with a reference to Giuliani’s battle with prostate cancer that led him to drop out of the New York Senate race against Clinton in 2000.

Of course, absence of proof notwithstanding, Giuliani was only amplifying a similar smear Trump made on the campaign trail. The GOP nominee questioned Clinton’s “mental and physical stamina” in a speech on Monday.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Angels and Molecules

The other day my wife, Ana, and I went out for a few hours. When we came back, we parked the car, entered through the downstairs garage door, came up to the first floor and into the living room. Where we saw our intrepid dog Ben, standing on the back of the living room couch, gazing out the window. Waiting.

To explain: Ana is the center of Ben’s universe, the sun around which all his planets revolve. She is his oxygen, his A to Z, his why the universe exists. He was waiting for her.

But Ben has gone deaf. He had somehow missed seeing the car’s approach, and hadn’t heard it come down the drive, or the motorized grind of the garage door opening, or our footsteps up the stairs. As far as he knew, we were still gone.

2016-08-19-1471640868-7835203-Ben2.jpg

Moments after I snapped this picture, I clapped, loud enough for him to hear, and he turned his head and saw Ana — and his little dog face broke into an ecstatic OMG, why didn’t someone tell me?! and all was right with the world.

It made me think of Beethoven.

Late in life, Beethoven was attending the premier of his ninth (and final) symphony. “Attending” is perhaps not the right word. Although he was by this time deaf as a board, he strongly felt he should be on hand to guide the musicians along in this huge and enormously challenging composition, so he stood right up there on stage, by the conductor, and gestured like crazy throughout the performance, doing his utmost to shape the right tempi and dynamics and phrasing — even though he could not hear a note.

After the last chord was sounded, the composer stood on the stage, breathing heavily, facing the orchestra. The audience, who had never heard anything like this before (nor, for that matter, had anyone on the planet), erupted into raucous, deafening applause.

The composer was oblivious. He had no idea anyone was even clapping. The mezzo-soprano soloist had to approach him (with tears in her eyes, and can you blame her?) and tug on his arm to get him to turn around and see the thunderous response his music has evoked.

This got me thinking:

What if we’re all like Ben and Beethoven?

What if we are surrounded by all the applause, but just don’t hear it? If the center of our universe, the thing we love most, has already arrived and is standing there watching us, but we just don’t know it yet?

I remember as a teenager, taking a walk one morning in my neighborhood, going blocks and blocks in my quiet suburban town, a Sunday, hardly anyone about. I’d been reading about physics and metaphysics and different thinkers’ understandings of how reality was assembled. I remember stopping, standing, and gazing out along a path down to a field.

It suddenly hit me that I was surrounded by billions, trillions, quadrillions of molecules, atoms, particles, all buzzing and humming and soaring in orbits around each other, vibrating like mad. I was a musician and student of acoustics, and I knew this basic fact of life: vibration makes noise. I was standing in the midst of the most colossal symphony imaginable. I just couldn’t hear it.

Although for those few moments, it felt as if I almost did.

There is an ancient tradition in Bali which holds that a gamelan orchestra, that most mesmerizing of human musical ensembles, doesn’t “make” its music. No, say the Balinese, that rippling stream of rhythm and melody is already happening, already going on, all around us, all the time. The job of the gamelan musicians is not to create the music, but simply to catch it, like a crystal set picking up radio waves and stepping them down to audible form.

What if we are surrounded by symphonies?

What if our ancestors, departed parents, and all those loved ones who have shuffled off before us are in fact standing right beside us, beaming with pleasure at our antics, cheering us on?

What if throngs of angels are stomping and hooting and laughing and shouting, exuberant as a sold-out Bruce Springsteen auditorium just to be there watching us, applauding our every mundane move like a chorus of thunderclaps?

You know, I think they may be.

You can almost hear them, can’t you?

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Nirvana: achieved.

Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives

This story, told by a master teller of such things, does more than take you inside the cages, fences, and walls of a zoo. It takes you inside the human heart, and an elephant’s, and a primate’s, and on and on. Tom French did in this book what he always does. He took real life and wrote it down for us, with eloquence and feeling and aching detail.”-Rick Bragg, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author”An insightful and detailed look at the complex life of a zoo and its denizens, both animal and human.”-Yann Martel, author of Life of Pi and Beatrice and VirgilWelcome to the savage and surprising world of Zoo Story, an unprecedented account of the secret life of a zoo and its inhabitants. Based on six years of research, the book follows a handful of unforgettable characters at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo: an alpha chimp with a weakness for blondes, a ferocious tiger who revels in Obsession perfume, and a brilliant but tyrannical CEO known as El Diablo Blanco. The sweeping narrative takes the reader from the African savannah to the forests of Panama and deep into the inner workings of a place some describe as a sanctuary and others condemn as a prison. Looks Like Ivanka Trump Doesn’t Pay Her Interns

Ivanka Trump, who markets herself as a champion of working women and learned about business by walking her father’s construction sites, apparently does not pay interns at her namesake fashion and jewelry company in New York City, according to a blog post on IvankaTrump.com that also appeared on her official Twitter page on Thursday.

Yes, that actually says #nomoneynoproblems, and comes from the Twitter account of the daughter of self-proclaimed billionaire and Republican nominee for president Donald Trump.

In the post, unpaid intern Quincy Bulin offers tips and includes advice from three of her unpaid colleagues ― all women, two named Mackenzie.

The advice includes finding a part-time job that actually pays, saving money during the school year, setting a budget and socializing cheaply.

Of course, Bulin leaves out the real key to surviving an unpaid internship: having well-off parents. Kids with families that can support them while they take on jobs for nothing are more likely to take on jobs for nothing.

Ivanka Trump is certainly not the only employer to use unpaid interns. And, her company did not immediately respond to a query, so we don’t know if these women are getting school credit or some other kind of reimbursement. She likely didn’t even send out that clueless tweet yesterday. She’s vacationing in Croatia while her father’s campaign goes into full meltdown mode.

The notion that she would employ women without paying them is newsworthy for a couple of reasons, though.

Ivanka and her brothers sold themselves as in-touch with working-class people at the Republican National Convention last month, talking up their experience on their father’s construction sites when they were growing up.

Unpaid internships just aren’t the province of working-class people. An unpaid internship is “a handout that, best intentions aside, accelerates a cycle of privilege and reward,” Darren Walker, the president of the Ford Foundation, pointed out in a piece for The New York Times recently. Companies should get rid of unpaid internships, Walker argues, because they reinforce a lack of diversity. Unpaid interns land jobs eventually at these companies, and you wind up with a pretty homogenous workforce, which leads to all kinds of problems.

Not paying these women for their work also looks off, coming from Ivanka, who is a self-proclaimed supporter of women’s equality in the workplace. Indeed, her website bills itself as the “ultimate destination for women who work.”

Unpaid internships lead to lower-paying jobs, according to research from the National Association of Colleges and Employers. For these unpaid interns, that first lower-paying job would start a cycle of under-earning of the sort that reinforces pay gaps between men and women.

Speaking of supporting women: Ivanka reportedly gives 8 weeks paid parental leave to her employees. That’s not terrible, considering the United States has no paid leave policy. Yet, it falls short of what most proponents of paid leave and maternal health researchers consider optimal. She recently came under fire because her label works with companies that do not offer any paid leave.

In all, not a great look for a fashion company.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Fear Is A Friend In Disguise

IMG_6472There’s a common concept in our culture — one that I’ve adopted myself at times — that fear is our enemy. When we’re caught in fear’s offspring of anxiety and panic, it certainly feels like we’re been taken into enemy territory and are being held hostage. It feels like someone wraps a gloved hand around our throat and is sitting on our chest with a fifty pound bag of bricks. Anxiety in any form around any storyline — relationships, health, impending loss/death — is an unmanageable state that feels like torture.

I’ve learned so much over the many decades that I’ve become intimately acquainted with fear’s many faces in my own psyche, the mind’s of my kids, and the inner worlds of my clients, and one of the lessons that stands out the most is that fear is not, in fact, our enemy. Just like one of the main tenets of conscious dreamwork poses that all dreams — even nightmares and what we refer to as “bad” dreams — come in the service of health and wholeness, so all symptoms of waking psyche, including anxiety, panic, intrusive thoughts, recurring somatic issues, and insomnia — arrive like emissaries from our personal underworld to deliver opportunities to strengthen our sense of Self. In other words, without fear as the challenger, we wouldn’t have many opportunities to grow.

We’re on a family vacation this week, and, as a result of encouraging the passion of my aviator son, my claustrophobic tendencies have been pushed to the limit. Over the course of the last three days, we’ve walked through a quarter-mile long tunnel, been packed into a freight elevator with 50 other people, and shot up the side of a 600 foot building in a glass elevator (can you guess what city we’re in?). Yesterday took the cake as we gifted him with a seaplane ride for his birthday. While he was more ecstatic than I’ve ever seen him, I felt terror take hold the minute we took off. In my early years of struggling with anxiety in my 20s, this kind of experience would have surely sent me into a panic attack. But yesterday I relied on the many tools that I’ve developed over the years to walk myself through fear: prayer to connect to the still-point of unwavering strength, breath to anchor, focusing on the beauty and majesty of nature to allow the bigger field to edge fear out of the way, and love (which is always stronger than fear). About halfway through the flight, I was able to let go and appreciate the view. And by the time we touched down into the water, I was smiling. I can’t say that I would choose to go up in a seaplane again any time soon, but if I want to share in my son’s passion and inevitable path as a pilot, I’m going to need to work with this fear over and over again, on many levels.

Each time I face a fear, I work through a layer of a block between me and my highest self. Fear, in this sense, is not an enemy at all, but is truly a friend in disguise. For there is a certain and undeniable sense of elation that comes when we face fear head on and rise to our next level of strength, one that doesn’t arise in any other way. While my son’s joy after the ride stemmed from his pure and unadulterated passion for flight, my joy came from facing and then releasing one gripped, gloved finger of fear that squeezes my heart. Depth psychology posits that our greatest wounds carry the seed for our greatest gifts. This is why anxiety and fear, when worked with consciously, always lead to gratitude for the struggle.

Nowhere does this tussle with fear show up more prominently than in the world of intimate relationships. As soon as fear pricks the heart, we shut down, for fear and opening are mutually exclusive. Fear constricts. Fear causes us to withdraw. And fear, most especially, colors our perception: when fear is at the helm, we see our partner through the narrow slits of cloudy eyes, the negative projections of our own inner demons filtering our perceptions.  The challenge, of course (and I say “of course” to those of you who are well-versed in my work), is that we’re not taught to view common relationship feelings like doubt, irritation, loss of sex drive, and lack of attraction is manifestations of fear and disconnection. And if we can’t name those experiences accurately, we fall into the danger zone of assigning first-layer meaning, which, in our culture means: it’s time to leave.

Nothing could be further than the truth. We need to learn the truth about love, which also means the truth about fear. We need to shift our mindset from “love should be easy” to “every manifestation of fear is an opportunity to strengthen my capacity to love.” We need to understand all of the ways that fear shows up so that we can become fluent and fluid at the art of naming them. These are just a few of the tools and techniques for shrinking fear that can be learned so that we don’t remain stifled under fear’s stronghold. The rest of the tools are what I will teach in my next round of Open Your Heart: A 30-day program to feel more love and attraction for your partner. If you’re ready to take the next step toward loosening fear’s grip and learning the Love Laws and Loving Actions that will help you feel more love and attraction for your partner, please join me on August 27th, 2016 for this ninth round.

There’s so much to learn about fear, and we cannot learn about love without learning about its counterpart. As much as we may know that fear is interfering with our joy, we must also learn that fear deserves our respect and gratitude. For fear is often a protective, early defense mechanism we learned as children to keep ourselves safe from the pain and powerlessness of being small without an adult to attune to our needs and guide us through the minefield of big feelings. In other words, fear kept our vulnerable hearts relatively safe until we could grow enough to find better ways of handling pain. So we begin with bowing down to fear with a silent and reverent thank you. From there, the rest of the work begins.

The Secret To Becoming Unbearably Attractive

This post was originally published on Techealthiest as part of Healthy Narcissism Month.

People obsess way too much about the physical changes needed to become more attractive to others.

I’m not saying that eating right and exercising aren’t important. It’s just that there are other minor changes that can be made to drastically increase your desirability and your chances of finding love.

If you want to attract someone who is only going to focus on your looks as the primary reason for being with you, then ignore my advice.

But if you’re seeking someone who has his or her head on straight and values what really matters in life over time (essentially qualities of the ultimate life partner), then check this out. In fact, for people who naturally follow the formula below, there’s nothing secret about it. They will instantly recognize your attractive qualities and gravitate toward you. The rest is up to you…

Here’s a HIP Formula for Amplifying Attractiveness, which will skyrocket how desirable you’ll appear to others:

Humility (maintaining a nonjudgmental attitude) + Integrity (being your word) + Passion (sharing your commitment to doing what you love) = a magnetic force that pulls people toward you.

1) H is for Humility.

The positive correlation between humility and physical attraction has been grossly underemphasized. There’s nothing more impressive, enthralling and comforting than someone who makes you feel valued and accepted. Be that person who seems to understand what really matters in life. Make people feel heard and listened to with such fine attention that they don’t know what to do with themselves. Show how powerful you are by disarming people when you demonstrate how you avoid judging people. Let them here you say, “Who am I to judge?

The most nonjudgmental people are also the most desirable if you can see beyond superficial appearances.

Avoid boasting about your accomplishments, the celebrities you’ve met or the great job perks you have (unless you’re sharing your passion for your job). One great way to show humility is to allow the focus of the conversation to remain on the other person even when there are perfect opportunities to brag, but don’t seem like you’re dodging questions about yourself. Let a potential partner slowly discover your greatness.

2) I is for Integrity.

Integrity is something that tends to draw immense admiration from others. It makes you memorable and reliable in an attractive way. Integrity will make you stand out as a star among untrustworthy people, especially in a digital age of ghosting and flakiness as the norm. Be your word to people and they will respect you and want more of you. When you make a commitment to getting together, don’t cancel your plans. If you point out a value, moral, or personality characteristic that you believe in, then be a living example of someone who strives to be what you say matters most to you.

3) P is for Passion.

Most importantly, in the spirit of making yourself wildly sexy to others, exude passion for what you enjoy doing. Passion makes you seem powerful, ambitious and exciting to be around. When people get a sense of how pumped you are about the things you love to do, it pulls them toward you. If you’re not passionate about work, then share your passion for your hobbies and interests. If you don’t have hobbies and interests that get you excited about, then commit to searching for your passions through trial and error and don’t be afraid to talk about the hunt.

People who undervalue these three character traits as a way to increase their desirability are likely to overvalue physical attractiveness and money.

What if you’re reading this and thinking to yourself that these qualities don’t turn you on so much?

That’s totally fine, but know that you probably don’t realize the behind-the-scenes impact that the expression of these traits has on your desirability.

I’ll also add that people who consciously value these traits in a romantic partner are most likely happier people than those who haven’t really thought about H or I or P.

Essentially, the HIP Formula is a tasty recipe for raising your baseline level of happiness.

In truth, this formula is much more effective for attracting a long-term partner as opposed to someone to date casually.

By the way, I’m a strong believer in the fake-it-till-you-make-it approach as long as you understand going into it that your commitment to displaying these qualities doesn’t end when you’ve achieved the desired results. It’s life-long.

Take pride in this commitment. It feels so fulfilling to experience yourself as successfully avoiding judgment, keeping your word or exuding passion

Mark my words… over time you’ll reap the mental health benefits of using them as guiding philosophy, and, in the process, you’ll seem super attractive to people even when you yourself don’t feel like a model of sexiness, which is probably quite often for most of us.

Good luck and please do share your thoughts and experiences.

Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives

Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives

Welcome to the savage and surprising world of Zoo Story, an unprecedented account of the secret life of a zoo and its inhabitants, both animal and human. Based on six years of research, the book follows a handful of unforgettable characters at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo: an alpha chimp with a weakness for blondes, a ferocious tiger who revels in Obsession perfume, and a brilliant but tyrannical CEO known as El Diablo Blanco.Zoo Story crackles with issues of global urgency: the shadow of extinction, humanity’s role in the destruction or survival of other species. More than anything else, though, it’s a dramatic and moving true story of seduction and betrayal, exile and loss, and the limits of freedom on an overcrowded planet-all framed inside one zoo reinventing itself for the twenty-first century. Thomas French, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, chronicles the action with vivid power: Wild elephants soaring above the Atlantic on their way to captivity. Predators circling each other in a lethal mating dance. Primates plotting the overthrow of their king. The sweeping narrative takes the reader from the African savannah to the forests of Panama and deep into the inner workings of a place some describe as a sanctuary and others condemn as a prison. All of it comes to life in the book’s four-legged characters. Even animal lovers will be startled by the emotional charge of these creatures’ histories, which read as though they were co-written by Dickens a

Kosovo Celebrates Joe Biden’s Late Son By Naming A Highway After Him

Kosovo celebrated the contributions of Vice President Joe Biden’s late son, Beau, by dedicating a 22-mile national highway to the former Delaware attorney general.

President Hashim Thaci and Prime Minister Isa Mustafa of Kosovo and members of the Biden family were in attendance at an emotional ceremony in the village of Sojeve on Wednesday.

The Joseph R. Biden “Beau” III Roadway in the southeastern region of the nation leads directly to the American military base, Camp Bondsteel, on which Beau Biden served in 2001. He died in May 2015 at the age of 46 from brain cancer.

In June, Mustafa announced the Balkan nation’s plan to rename the highway, citing Beau Biden’s contributions to peace and justice in Kosovo.

“The government has decided that Ferizaj-Gjilan road near village Sojeva and near the American base, Bondsteel, be named Beau Biden. Beau has contributed in peace, security and justice in Kosovo and in peace and democracy missions in other countries as well,” Mustafa said.

“Beau’s father, American Vice President Joe Biden, is proud with his work even though he died at a young age. We’re proud with the permanent friendship of Kosovo with US,” he added.

Beau Biden helped the region recover from the Kosovo War, which took place from 1998 to 1999, by serving as a legal adviser who trained developing judges and prosecutors for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in EuropeThe airstrike intervention by the United States and NATO helped end the war ― leading many in Kosovo to regard the U.S. as their “savior.”

Joe Biden expressed to ceremony attendees on Wednesday his love for Kosovo and his feelings of pride for his son’s accomplishments and their contribution to the nation’s prosperity.

“Beau would be so proud that this road connects two great cities. And Beau, when he came here, fell in love with the country, like I have,” Biden said. “We are extremely extremely, extremely grateful, and we’re humbled beyond words.”

This isn’t the first time the Balkan government has honored U.S. officials on its territory. Former presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Woodrow Wilson also have roads named after them, signifying Kosovo’s longstanding friendship with the United States.

4 Principles To Help You Become A Power Couple

When we first fall in love, sparks are in the air! An incredible fireworks that only two people get to see… But many wonder, how do you keep it going when the fireworks vanish, when fights, trials and tests come your way? Well, we believe practicing these 4 principles can help you become a power couple and overcome the ordeals of life!

2016-08-17-1471468850-2894740-StrongRelationship.jpg

Principle #1: Have a Couple’s Vision

Couples with no compelling, aspirational and clear visions don’t tend to last. Of course you and us know several “unions” that have gone on for decades without any such thing. They’ve stuck (the verb seems appropriate here…) together in spite of passion, respect or love, for financial reasons, the kids or something else…

“Power Couples” all have a compelling, aspirational and clear vision of what they intend to aim for together. That’s what makes them stronger, inspire them to move forward and guard them against futile arguments that can turn into unproductive fights. Once you crystallized your vision, it will serve many purposes but the primary one will be to help you remember “why” you are together at the first place.

Principle #2: Taboo Talks

We all have taboos as individuals, stuff that we want to keep hidden under the rug for no one to see. Couples are no different, but when taboos remain unaddressed, they can turn any benign event into a big drama that could have been avoided in the first place. What are the taboos in your relationship? Is it a former lover? The fact that you are financially “better off” than your partner? Is it your kids versus hers? Or an unsatisfying sex life?

Whatever it is, unveil those taboos, talk about it and establish a satisfactory protocol between the two of you that will help you manage “potential dramas.” Such protocol could be as simple as saying:

“‘Hon, I think we are entering taboo territory here so let’s be cautious about what we are gonna say or do.’”

It could also be:

“‘You know what, this (fill in the blank) is totally off limits for me. I just want you to be sensitive about it because I am not ready to address it.’”

Wonder Woman and Superman Power Couple

Principle #3: Use a Conflicts Resolutions System

The verb “conflict” is often defined as “to come into collision.” We’re sure you’ve been there in your couple. The thing is, it’s so easy to get irrational when conflict arises. Our experience has been that real conflicts happen when an important decision, one that will ultimately affect the couple and/or the family, needs to be taken. Just to name a few, it could be a career change, the purchase of a new home or the necessity to have an elderly parent move-in with the family. While this may sound simplistic, we have learned to manage conflicts with scorecards. Yes scorecards! Allow us to share a personal example here.

We have bought two homes together. As it seems to always happen with a couple about to make such an important transaction, each time we both had slightly different visions for the whole thing. So we established a scoring system that helped us keep our emotions in check! We individually made a list of criterions that were important to us: size of the house, airport proximity, garage, swimming pool, price, type of community, lot size, age of the house, distance to golf course, municipal taxes, etc. We then reconciled our lists, agreed to put points next to each criterion and total them up. Each time we visited a house, we would score each of them individually and then share our result. We also established that if our scoring system totaled a maximum of 100 points, the “passing mark” for any house to be considered would have to be no less than 70 for BOTH OF US. That type of system has made wonders in our relationship, not only with our real estate transactions but also with any other major decisions for which we wanted to leave our emotions aside.

Principle #4: Set your Couples’ Laws

Even Power Couples quarrel from time to time. There is nothing damaging about it provided you have boundaries that will protect and not jeopardize your relationship. Think of them as “Couples’ Laws” that must be established ahead of time before any arguments arise. This prevents sentiments to blind you from the issue at hand.
Examples of Couples’ Laws could be:

We will not interrupt each other when one’s giving his/her perspective.
It’s not about being right. It’s about getting to a common ground and resolve the problem.
We will be respectful and weigh our words before unleashing them so we won’t regret saying them.
Sometimes we will agree to disagree. This may mean we will step back, take the time to reflect and snooze on it a little…

Mom’s Simple Anecdote Captures Double Standard In The Way We Praise Dads

Inspired by an everyday experience, Australian blogger Constance Hall is speaking out about a double standard many parents have noticed.

On Monday, the mother of four shared a powerful post about the stark contrast in the way society tends to view moms and dads.

Hall relayed an anecdote about two afternoons with her family. The mom was having lunch at a restaurant in the park when her baby’s diaper needed to be changed. Since there was no changing table in the bathroom, she went into the park and changed the diaper in the grass.

“Thirty minutes later a women approached me and said, ‘I saw you changing your daughters nappy, could you please use the change table next time,’” Hall recalled. When she told the woman there was no changing table in the bathroom, she replied, “There is, it’s in the disabled toilet and that’s around the other corner.”

“I felt like a loser. The world went on,” Hall said.

The next weekend, her husband Bill changed their baby in the grass and the park and encountered a different reaction from strangers.

“A group of women walked passed, one said.. ‘Aww good dad!!! That’s what we like to see, get in there,’” she explained. “Bill felt like a legend. The world went on.”

The mom shared her thoughts on this discrepancy in the way she and her husband were treated for doing the same thing. She wrote:

I didn’t think much of it because I am used to it.

I am used to being scrutinized for jobs that my husband is praised for.

I am used to picking the kids up from school to judgmental looks about being late, while Bill is used to a red fucking carpet and a 12 piece band praising him for his heroic appearance at school pick up.

That’s the way we as a society are, we place so much pressure on women to be perfect and selfless while putting low parenting expectations on men.

Hall clarified that she’s not asking people to stop praising dads. “I love seeing Bill get praised for the things he does for our kids,” she said. “He is a good dad, why not celebrate him.”

But she called on moms to praise each other as well, not just fathers they see in public. “Let’s see a women talking on the phone while pushing her pram and think ‘Wow, she chose not to stay at home bidding on eBay smashing straight vodka. She chose to come to the park and be a magnificent mum,’” she wrote.

Hall’s post has clearly struck a chord. It has received over 73,000 likes as of Thursday afternoon, and the comments section is full of stories from other moms who witnessed this double standard with their own male partners. Other commenters pointed out ways that society doesn’t encourage equal views of parenting, like the absence of changing tables in men’s room.

Clearly we have a ways to go before reaching parenting parity.

Accountable Care Organizations and the Affordable Care Act

In an effort to get out from under a “fee-for-service” model in health care delivery, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) calls for programs with different payment methods. The goal is to decrease the growth in health care spending and improve the quality of care being delivered. Physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers are being offered incentives to form networks to coordinate health care and deliver the care in a more efficient and less costly manner. An Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is an example of one of these programs.

An Accountable Care Organization is paid a set amount of money per patient enrolled. Medicare is not billed per procedure. Bonuses will be paid to the ACO if it stays under a predetermined budget; but it will have to pay penalties if it goes over budget.

Accountable Care Organizations are designed to have health care providers and hospitals coordinate care to keep patients from getting so sick as to require hospitalization. It is the hospitalizations that lead to higher costs. The government and other third party payers would pay bonuses to those systems that would keep costs below what would have been spent under the traditional Medicare model.

Unfortunately, in crafting the ACO section of the ACA, the government made requirements which have led to increasing costs and a reduction in patient choices as to health care. These requirements include the need to institute an Electronic Health Record (EHR), track and submit quality measures data, and the ACOs must be at least 75% under the control of providers.

The new overhead costs mandated under the ACA are forcing many private practitioners to give up their practices and become employees of the hospitals. This loss of private practitioners reduces the patient’s choices for providers. In fact, if the provider has to join a hospital or group that is not covered under the patient’s new insurance, they lose the doctor of their choice. So much for being able to keep their provider. With more overhead costs and less choice, it is not surprising that health care costs continue to rise.

By requiring the ACOs to be at least 75% provider controlled, the law assumes that providers would actually be interested in doing this extra administrative work. Unfortunately, most physicians are not subject matter experts in starting complex health care organizations such as ACOs. Also, the needed data acquisition and analysis is beyond the expertise (and interest) of those whose real love is taking care of patients. The data acquisition and analysis is needed to be able to justify care and apply for the bonuses available for those providing high quality and cheaper care. The payers are unlikely to send the checks without the data.

Even if the payers do send bonus checks to the ACOs, how will the bonus money be divided amongst the providers? Hospitals and health care systems are using Relative Value Units (RVU) to measure productivity of the providers. The providers who do more clinical work (generate more income for the system) get more RVUs. This looks like a fee-for-service model with RVUs being substituted for dollars. Is this a “Catch 22″ of the ACA whereby those doing the most tests and procedures are, once again, the ones who will generate the most income?

Currently, the physicians who are generating the most RVUs are the ones being rewarded; but those doing the necessary non-clinical work will not be generating the RVUs needed to be eligible for the bonuses. This model is inherently unfair. Unless there will be RVUs associated with administrative work, it is unlikely that physicians will be willing to do the work required in the ACO model; this will lead to a violation of the 75% requirement.

What will happen to the ACO which is not provider controlled under the law’s requirement? There is no case on point yet, but I would not be surprised if this rule is ignored; not an unusual circumstance under this law.

Under ACOs, providers are given financial incentives if they save money. They are to do this by avoiding unnecessary tests and procedures. They are also encouraged to keep a close eye on their patients with syndromes that could be optimally managed as outpatients. Diabetes and congestive heart failure are examples of clinical care models already being studied to improve care and reduce costs. How best to measure cost savings and quality is still being figured out.

Unfortunately, this model only rewards cost cutting. There are no bonuses for providing good care. It is conceivable that ACOs which provide good care but do not reduce costs will be penalized. This has actually happened; Maine’s Beacon Health Network had a high score for patient health but was still fined $ 2.9 million for going over budget. Another ACO, Banner Health Network, scored lower on quality than Beacon in 2014, but they were paid a bonus of $ 18 million because they were able to cut costs.

As health care costs continue to rise, and the patient mix continues to be predominately those who need to use health care, the ACOs are struggling. If ACOs are to survive, they will need to “cherry-pick” the healthy patients. Unfortunately, it is the healthy patient population which is holding off from buying health insurance as the premiums and deductibles continue to rise. The individual mandate and community rating makes the delay in purchasing health care insurance a reasonable choice for the patient but a potentially devastating situation for the ACOs.

Many ACOs have withdrawn from the health care market and others are trying to consolidate to minimize costs. In an effort to get economy of scale, some ACOs are trying to merge. In a strange twist, the move to minimize costs by consolidation is now being blocked by government lawyers who are afraid that further consolidation will lead to monopolistic practices.

A proposed merger of Aetna Inc. and Humana Inc. is being blocked by the Justice Department. A federal judge has set December 5th as the date to start trial proceedings. Under the current contractual agreement between the two insurers, if a merger does not occur by December 31st, Humana has an option of walking away and collecting a $ 1billion fee. This is another rather novel way for insurers to make money. In this case, however, Humana’s gain is Aetna’s loss.

In a similar case, Anthem is trying to acquire Cigna Corp. This case is scheduled to begin on November 21st. If this deal does not close by April 30, 2017, Cigna will be owed a $ 1.85 billion breakup fee.

ACOs payment policies are evolving. It will take time for health care providers to adjust their mind-set from individual care–doing what’s best for an individual patient–to a population model where the cost of care must be reduced.

As time goes on, it is foreseeable that the government will adjust savings targets which will make it even more difficult for the surviving ACOs to show they are saving on health care spending. Everyone cannot continue to be “above average.”

If the ultimate goal is to have a single party payer, then punishing the surviving ACOs makes sense. When ACOs and other health care delivery models (Co-ops) disappear as is happening, then the government as the main provider of health care funding will be all that’s left. It is no surprise that both President Obama and Hillary Clinton have both planted the seeds for the single government payer.

The Secret To A Life Of Grace & Ease

Ever wonder why so many people suffer? I have. I was one of those people who lived my life worrying about things, always in a constant struggle. I never believed life could be like it is now, filled with joy, abundance, grace and ease.

It took me a long time to get to the bottom of why I suffered. And there are many reasons that I’ve come across. But one of the biggest reasons was that I had a religious belief that said I am a sinner. I took that belief to mean that I am bad and not worthy of God’s abundance and love.

Over the years, I’ve chipped away at that old belief. I’ve read different definitions of what “sin” really means, one being an ancient archery term that means “off the mark.” But what I’ve learned through my own conversations with God is that sin means we are simply being human. And in our humanness, we disconnect from the love inside of us.

God is love. And love is God. To connect to God, you must tap into the love inside of you. Loving yourself unconditionally is the way there.

That means you have to get to know who you are. You have to take the time to look within and get in touch with what YOU believe, not what others tell you. You must give yourself and your feelings a voice.

Loving yourself unconditionally means you must be kind and gentle to yourself, no longer judging yourself.

Most of us have been taught to believe that if we love ourselves, honoring our thoughts, feelings, passions and dreams, we are being selfish. In other words, we are being sinners. And if we are sinners, we are bad. So to avoid our fear of God’s wrath, we continue to deny ourselves.

And, thus, we live in a perpetual disconnect.

As a result, we feel stressed out, competitive, depressed, angry, resentful, frustrated, alone and never “enough.” We believe our pain is caused by people and circumstances outside of ourselves, but our suffering is due to a disconnection from unconditional love.

You don’t deserve to suffer and struggle. You stop the pain when you stop seeing yourself as anything but love and give yourself permission to align with God.

You are reading this article because your spirit is calling you to move into alignment. That means no longer trying to be anything but you.

You say yes to love when you say yes to you!

If you’re like me and were raised with the belief that being a sinner means you’re bad, then chances are you’re trying to be someone other than who you are.

You’re not bad. You’re human. And to be human means you’re going to feel disconnected at times. You’re going to be “off the mark.” To get “on the mark,” you must accept that you are human.

It’s time to stop judging your humanness.

You are here to have a human experience. That’s why you’re on this planet! The more you can accept this and love yourself, releasing all judgment, the sooner you’ll move into unconditional love and align with God. It is in this alignment where you experience peace, joy, passion, playfulness and purpose. And with that inner abundance, you will attract unlimited outer abundance.

Love attracts love.

As you own this truth, your life will flow with grace and ease.

It’s time to stop hiding. To embrace your humanness you must get honest with yourself and honest with the world.

As you say yes to yourself, you live as an expression of God in human form. You live as unconditional love.

The next time you suffer emotionally, simply think of yourself as being “off the mark” of who you were created to be. Ask yourself, “What do I need to do to embrace my humanness and love myself unconditionally?”

As you give yourself full permission to love and accept yourself, you will raise your Worthiness Quotient to abundance. Miracle after miracle will show up. You’re suffering will end and you’ll open up to receive a life of grace and ease because you KNOW you are worthy of it.

Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard Are The Stigma-Fighting Duo Of Our Time

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are giving us couple goals in the best way: By openly talking about their mental health.

The duo was recognized earlier this month at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Voice Awards, an honor given to public figures who excel in behavioral health advocacy.

In their acceptance video, Bell and Shepard acknowledged the mental illness stigma and proudly claimed that they will continue to speak out about psychological and substance use disorders in the media.

“For me personally, I love talking about my issues because hiding things leads to shame and shame is [not good],” Bell said. “So I will continue to do so.”

Earlier this year, Bell discussed her own experiences with depression in an interview on “Off Camera with Sam Jones.” She revealed that she first started struggling with the disorder as a teenager, and her mother encouraged her to seek treatment. The “Frozen” actress also slammed the negative stereotypes people with mental illness face in a candid essay for TIME.

There is such an extreme stigma about mental health issues, and I can’t make heads or tails of why it exists,” she wrote in the piece. “Anxiety and depression are impervious to accolades or achievements. Anyone can be affected, despite their level of success.”

Mental illness, which brings about debilitating physical and emotional symptoms, is rather common. Nearly one in four people globally will experience a mental health issue at some point. However, research shows there’s still judgment associated with the conditions.

In the SAMHSA video, Shepard implored people to share their own experiences with mental health issues or anything else that society often regards as “weak” or a “flaw.” Why? Because it not only helps the person dealing with an issue, it also helps others.

“I always learn a lot more from people’s trials and failures and struggles than their big victories,” he said.

Can we just listen to these two talk all day?
