Obama Administration’s Major Federal Foreclosure Prevention Program Will Come To An End In 2016

2016-06-20-1466445448-7983139-MHA.jpg

The Making Home Affordable (MHA) Program, which was launched in 2009 to assist millions of distressed homeowners facing foreclosure, is set to expire on December 31, 2016. Under this program, homeowners with non-GSE mortgages (i.e. mortgages not owned or guaranteed by FannieMae or Freddie Mac) may apply and be reviewed for refinancing, loan modifications, short sales, deeds-in-lieu, and unemployment assistance with their lenders in accordance with stringent guidelines set forth in the Making Home Affordable Handbook. Many homeowners who were approved for loan modifications under the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) were also eligible for free HUD-approved credit counseling to assist them in creating a household budget that lowers the risk of default in the future.

Previously set to expire on December 31, 2015, MHA was extended through 2016 due to its widespread success and the continuing need for relief for millions of homeowners nationwide. However, the number of applications under the MHA program have declined overall in recent years due to both the stabilizing housing market and drop in the unemployment rate. At the end of 2015, RealtyTrac reported that there were 1,083,572 properties with foreclosure filings nationwide–a significant drop from the peak of 2,871,891 properties with foreclosure filings in 2010. As of May 2016, RealtyTrac reported a total of 896,913 properties in default, at auction or repossessed by the banks.

The Obama administration has not yet announced another one-year extension to the program through 2017, and it is unclear at this time whether such an extension will be granted. The unknowns that are involved with the looming presidential election make the possibility of an extension even less clear. Though the foreclosure rate is down, there is still a great need for the MHA program for the many properties currently in foreclosure and the many millions more that are still at risk for default.

Homeowners who are still facing the possibility of foreclosure may apply for any of the foreclosure alternative programs under MHA on or before December 31, 2016 deadline. Though it is not necessary to have a decision on the application for a loan modification, short sale, or deed-in-lieu by the end of 2016 to be eligible under the MHA program, servicers are required under the MHA program to design policies and procedures that ensure that permanent modifications are effective by December 1, 2017 and short sales and deeds-in-lieu are closed by December 1, 2017.

Struggling homeowners should apply now to take advantage of the foreclosure alternatives provided by the MHA program before the deadline of December 31, 2016. If homeowners do not apply by that date, they will be limited to applying for lender/servicer in-house programs, which are usually limited in scope and may not be as affordable or reasonable as the offers under the MHA program.

The Secret To A Happy Life

It’s one of the biggest questions we can ask. What is the secret to a happy life? Is it love? Is it money? Is it a fulfilling career? Is it a sense of control? What was that “one thing” the late actor Jack Palance was talking about in the 1991 movie City Slickers that is the secret to life when he raised his finger and said, “Just one thing. You stick to that an the rest don’t mean sh*t.”

To find this secret let’s look at what life is about from a larger perspective. Although it seems chaotic at times, life does have a consistent intent and purpose. Everything in existence is moving towards something, some aim, or some intention. Actually intention is what drives all of the movement in the universe. This is seen in the stars, the volcanoes that produce new earth, all living plant life, all animal actions, and in the choices millions of people make every day. This intention, from the deepest level emerges from the urge to “be” or to exist. Everyone and every thing is just trying to express or demonstrate the validation of existence (I AM) .

So here is where it gets interesting. The way each individual person decides what his or her survival or existence is based on, is what determines everything they do and hence everything they experience. It determines every thought, every choice, and every action and reaction. The idea of what is necessary for survival is completely subjective and different for every person. When someone is doing what gives him or her the greatest feeling of being alive, life feels timeless and endless. There is a state of peace, happiness and certain contentment. When life doesn’t cooperate with what one wants to experience the mind and soul get restless and uneasy as the ego scrambles to figure out what to do, and how to do it in order to get back to balance and feeling like ourselves.

This is when we seek things in our outer existence to achieve or experience that are thought to be the answer to this quest. Love, money, control, career are just a few of the main examples. However, these achievements often become temporary and are susceptible to change and misunderstanding. Here are some examples.

While romantic love is amazing and creates an enormous amount of positive feelings, it is not the complete answer. Another person does not “complete you”. You have to complete you before you can have a balanced relationship.

While money can help you do a lot of things and create a lot of outer experiences, it can’t buy lasting fulfillment or happiness. It actually may distract you from this sacred space.

While it feels nice to be in control of all things in your world, the truth is that the more you try and control things the more life reminds you that you can’t control everything. Many things in life are beyond anyone’s control.

While having a good career is a very positive thing in general and can give you a great sense of purpose, stability and meaning, eventually companies, careers, interests and the times change. Many are faced with these changes later in life.

The above examples are all wonderful creative experiences but the real secret is that no single experience or outer achievement is the answer to a happy life. The “secret” is actually about achieving an level of understanding, awareness or general state of “mindfulness” that simply knows that all is perfect in each moment including YOU. It is about really and truly trusting life and circumstance at every twist and turn on the path to your continual creative desires. It is about embracing your path, your past choices, and the ability to make a new powerful choice in this moment.

This awareness consists of the following:

1. The understanding that life is what you make of it based on how much you believe in you. No matter what the circumstance. No matter what the situation. The experience of life will always be a result of how you decide to interpret and respond to yourself and life. Negative out is negative in. Positive out is positive in. The quality of your energy and how you see who you are is creating it all. By being accepting of yourself you are able to see more of what’s possible of you, regardless of circumstance.

2. The understanding that your reactions reveal your truth. Your truth at the deepest level is what leads to your choices and your experiences. What you believe to be true about you is what drives all you create. Stuff happens. Life will confront you with many situations that challenge you. How compassionate you are with yourself will be critical to the energy that goes into your next choice. That choice holds the power to change everything for you.

3. The understanding that by making the commitment to trust life you demonstrate a powerful faith in action. This means you don’t get rattled as much because there is an underlying sense of calm and faith. This faith has a powerful positive effect on the construction of your next experience. In other words it influences the probability of what happens or of what you experience in your next moment of life is based on your faith in this one. You either see life working for you or against you. Here’s a powerful hint – If it’s happening to you, it has something in it for you to experience or learn. You can learn the fastest when your reaction is one of openness and acceptance rather than resistance.

4. The understanding that the Universe is here to support you. It does this both in what it brings to you through your experiences and by how you choose to respond to them. Regardless, it is a demonstration of unconditional love through the process of offering you a greater and greater awareness of who you really are. It’s role is to help you put the conditions together based on what you say you want. However, it can only support you as much as you support you.

5. The understanding that life is endless. Knowing that energy cannot be created or destroyed but only transforms leads to a greater understanding about you and your existence. When you embrace more of this reality about the nature of energy and consciousness you don’t feel like time is running out and are more relaxed and peaceful in each moment. This enhances your creative power.

To summarize, the secret of secrets in regard to living your best life is about the quality of your state of mind in every moment. Make the commitment today to journey more into the power of self-awareness to make sure only the most peaceful, trusting and loving energy is expressed to yourself and your world. This is revealed both in your self-talk and by the words and actions you choose in your response to others and to any circumstance you encounter. In this greater state of understanding and awareness life becomes a beautiful state of mindfulness and “flow”. This connective attitude will work to serve you and your creative intentions for a happy life in a very powerful way.

How Women Sabotage Their Relationship with Food

The health and wellness industry is at a crossroads. Evidenced by the growing rates of both obesity and eating disorders, women are simultaneously starving and overfeeding themselves, and it goes beyond food. They’re starved for a more meaningful, purpose-driven life and overfed by media messages telling them who and how they should look and be. As a result, they’re using food to punish or self-medicate. It’s no surprise that, as a gender, our relationship with food has become severely damaged.

Every day I turn on the television, open a magazine or read an article on a popular wellness web site touting a new workout, promoting a trendy diet or spouting misinformed advice. I’m not surprised that many women feel confused, misinformed and overwhelmed. I totally get it and that’s exactly why I’m on a mission to help women make sense of it all.

I whole-heartedly believe it doesn’t have to be as complicated as we make it. The habits we’ve subconsciously cultivated through our adult lives have shaped our relationship with food, but with some awareness and mindful practice, we can turn the tides and learn to counteract a few common pitfalls with mindset shifts and healthier habits.

Calorie-Counting

We live in a calorie-crazed world. A lot of the women I coach in my practice are in the habit of tracking their calories to exhaustion. No wonder. There are even apps devoted to this crazy-making habit. This is why calorie counting is one of the first habits I work with clients to break. The only foods labels I want them to read are the ones that list the ingredients.

The most successful eating plans don’t hinge on calorie-counting, because when you eat a diet rich in whole foods and low in — or better yet, devoid of — packaged foods, calories are far less of a concern.

It all comes down to calorie density, the scientific term for the number of calories per pound of food. Calorie density is lowest for unprocessed plant foods. Filling up on plant foods keeps calorie consumption low, balances blood sugar, “crowds out” unhealthy choices, controls appetite and minimizes cravings. With this approach, you can eat more food containing fewer calories and potentially create healthy weight loss over the long haul.

Fad Dieting

The diet culture has exacerbated much of the guilt women tend to feel when it comes to food and eating.

A diet involves some kind of food restriction or calorie deficit. You might be successful with a diet for a period of time and even see results. But over time, your body will fight back, usually with a revenge binge on the food you were restricting. Diets are a quick fix and aren’t meant to be a sustainable, long-term success plan. It’s a known fact that 98 percent of people who lose weight on a diet gain it back.

Eating researcher Traci Mann suggests dieting makes it impossible to maintain weight loss with a one-two punch: it increases production of hunger hormones while simultaneously slowing down your metabolism. So while a diet may help you trim weight – at least at first – it can’t instill new and permanent healthy habits, teach you how to eat for ultimate energy and prevention, listen to your body or understand your cravings. If anything, it cultivates an unhealthy relationship with food.

Making permanent changes requires a change in mindset and familiarity with your body, both of which a diet can’t deliver.

Self-Judgment

If you’ve ever been berated or criticized by someone you knew, loved or respected you know how completely debilitating it can feel. When it happens repeatedly, you understand how damaging it can be. When we beat ourselves up for getting off track by not sticking to a diet, eating too many cookies or skipping a day at the gym, it has the same injurious effect. After awhile, you may even start to subconsciously rebel. It’s cyclical.

This was my approach before my own transformation. With a mindset that life was what happened to me, my external circumstances controlled how I behaved and what I ate. After-work happy hours turned into hangovers, and my eating habits went from bad to worse when sugar became a stand-in for actual food i.e. cupcakes for dinner. At my lowest, messiest point, I was ready to take control of my life and put it on a new trajectory. In that moment, I decided I would place a much higher priority on my physical, emotional and mental well-being. When I let everything from there on out be guided by that intention, my entire life changed.

When you come from a place of forgiveness, love and self-care, a healthy lifestyle no longer seems like a chore, but a gift you give yourself.

Grazing

Whether you’ve never learned how to build a healthy plate or are afraid of committing to a full meal, grazing is arguably one of the most damaging habits we can develop. In reality, grazing is mindless eating and not only can it lead to eventual weight gain, you also don’t get to experience full satisfaction from food. You may have experienced this first-hand as I know I have. When you graze all day, by the end of the day, you may end up eating more than you would have had you just sat down to your meals mindfully, throughout the day.

Because you’re not feeling satisfied, you’re constantly looking for something else to eat – or at least thinking about it. Grazing can have an emotional element to it when it’s not truly driven by physical hunger but rather emotional hunger resulting from stress, boredom or sadness.

Combat the tendency to graze by sitting down to a balanced plate for breakfast, lunch and dinner and choose snacks that contain both fat and protein.

Everyone has food noise. Where and how you got yours is part of your story and will ultimately play a role in your transformation. Sometimes that transformation requires hitting bottom first, other times you catch yourself before the fall, but regardless of the food noise you experience, learn to trust yourself to make energizing, nutritious and naturally slimming choices and let go of whatever negative thoughts you have about what and how you ate yesterday. Focus on how you can be good to yourself today.

Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes

Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes

Get this: Cronus liked to eat babies. Narcissus probably should have just learned to masturbate. Odin got construction discounts with bestiality. Isis had bad taste in jewelry. Ganesh was the very definition of an unplanned pregnancy. And Abraham was totally cool about stabbing his kid in the face. All our lives, we’ve been fed watered-down, PC versions of the classic myths. In reality, mythology is more screwed up than a schizophrenic shaman doing hits of unidentifiedwait, it all makes sense now. In Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes, Cory O’Brien, creator of Myths RETOLD!, sets the stories straight. These are rude, crude, totally sacred texts told the way they were meant to be told: loudly, and with lots of four-letter words. Skeptical? Here are a few more gems to consider: Zeus once stuffed an unborn fetus inside his thigh to save its life after he exploded its mother by being too good in bed. The entire Egyptian universe was saved because Sekhmet just got too hammered to keep murdering everyone. The Hindu universe is run by a married couple who only stop murdering in order to throw sweet dance partieson the corpses of their enemies. The Norse goddess Freyja once consented to a four-dwarf gangbang in exchange for one shiny necklace. And there’s more dysfunctional goodness where that came from.

FDR and the Spanish Civil War

FDR and the Spanish Civil War

What was the relationship between President Franklin D. Roosevelt, architect of America’s rise to global power, and the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War, which inspired passion and sacrifice, and shaped the road to world war? While many historians have portrayed the Spanish Civil War as one of Roosevelt’s most isolationist episodes, Dominic Tierney argues that it marked the president’s first attempt to challenge fascist aggression in Europe. Drawing on newly discovered archival documents, Tierney describes the evolution of Roosevelt’s thinking about the Spanish Civil War in relation to America’s broader geopolitical interests, as well as the fierce controversy in the United States over Spanish policy. Between 1936 and 1939, Roosevelt’s perceptions of the Spanish Civil War were transformed. Initially indifferent toward which side won, FDR became an increasingly committed supporter of the leftist government. He believed that German and Italian intervention in Spain was part of a broader program of fascist aggression, and he worried that the Spanish Civil War would inspire fascist revolutions in Latin America. In response, Roosevelt tried to send food to Spain as well as illegal covert aid to the Spanish government, and to mediate a compromise solution to the civil war. However unsuccessful these initiatives proved in the end, they represented an important stage in Roosevelt’s emerging strategy to aid democracy in Europe.

Trump Makes Yet Another Attempt To Sound Presidential

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump launched a new attack against Hillary Clinton on Wednesday, saying the former secretary of state “may be the most corrupt person ever to seek the presidency.”

“Hillary Clinton has perfected the politics of personal profit and even theft,” Trump told an invited group of supporters and journalists in New York. “She gets rich making you poor.”

Speaking from a teleprompter, a move he’s derided in the past, Trump sought to turn the page on his presidential campaign after a terrible few weeks that included a botched response to the Orlando massacre, intense backlash to his criticism of a federal judge based on the judge’s Mexican heritage, the firing of his campaign manager and a disastrous fundraising report.

“This election will decide whether we are ruled by the people, or by the politicians,” Trump said, before painting Clinton as a political insider beholden to special interests — an accusation that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) frequently leveled against Clinton during the Democratic primary.

We will never be able to fix a rigged system by counting on the same people who rigged it in the first place,” Trump said, before appealing directly to Sanders supporters to “join our movement.”

The speech contained few incendiary comments of the kind Trump’s rallygoers have come to expect. There was no mention of building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and making Mexico pay for it, and Trump did not call for a ban on Muslim immigration to the United States. In fact, he spoke of “peaceful Muslims across the world who have been terribly victimized [by the Islamic State], and who only want to raise their kids in peace and safety.”

He did, on the other hand, issue an ominous warning about Clinton wanting to admit “hundreds of thousands of refugees from the most dangerous countries on Earth — with no way to screen who they are.” In reality, refugees to the U.S. go through a rigorous vetting process.

Still, it was a marked shift in tone from Trump’s usual explosive style. And if it wasn’t quite the long-promised “pivot” toward civility that establishment Republicans have been anxiously awaiting, it did suggest that Trump’s campaign chairman — the experienced Beltway insider Paul Manafort — is now firmly in charge of the candidate’s message following the ouster of Trump’s truculent former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski.

For the content of the speech, Trump relied heavily on two negative books about Clinton. The first, Clinton Cash, by Peter Schweizer, delves into the perceived associations between Clinton’s work as secretary of state and the Clinton Foundation, which counts foreign countries among its donors.

The second book, Crisis in Character, was written by a former Secret Service agent and questions Clinton’s temperament. However, a number of current and former agents have denounced the book, saying the author, Gary Byrne, was never close enough to the former first lady or her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to have seen all the things he claims.

Clinton’s campaign pushed back against the Trump speech, telling NPR, “While Hillary Clinton lays out her vision for an America that is stronger together with an economy that works for everyone and not just those at the top, Donald Trump can’t help himself from rehashing and recycling more tired and old nonsense from books that already have been debunked.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

What Are Your Happiness Strengths and Weaknesses?

Tchiki Davis

Happiness is something nearly everyone wants more of. Perhaps we don’t feel it often enough or strongly enough, or it seems to slip through our fingers far too easily.

Many happiness seekers have read dozens of articles, yet they don’t feel much closer to creating the happiness they desire in their lives. If this sounds like you, don’t worry. Reading about the practices that increase happiness is a great first step. But the key that you may not have heard yet is this: To increase your happiness, you need a strategic plan for action.

Making a plan for optimizing happiness is more important than most people realize. But think about it: Would you bake a cake without a recipe? Would you fix your transmission without the car manual? Would you go on a journey into the wilderness without a map? We know, intuitively, that a plan or guide or map–some kind of tool–makes it much easier to effectively navigate new territory.

If long-term happiness is new territory for you, then you need some kind of plan that maps out a strategy for reaching your happiness goals.

How to make an effective happiness plan

The best way to make progress toward a happier life is by being strategic and focusing on the skills that you need to learn. As an example, consider math skills. Say you are great at addition but not so good at multiplication. It’s unlikely that practicing addition will make you better at multiplication. To get better at multiplication, you need to practice multiplication. And your math skills, as a whole, will not get much better until you practice multiplication.

The same logic holds for happiness. It turns out that happiness is not something we find, or reach, or become–we learn happiness skills, just as we would learn any other skill. Most likely you are already really good at some happiness skills and not so good at others. For example, you might already be great at gratitude, but not so good at empathy. By practicing gratitude, you are not likely to become more empathic. So your happiness skills, as a whole, will improve more if you spend your time practicing empathy, one of your weaknesses.

Some of the most effective mental health interventions rely on this well-supported and commonsensical idea that if we are poor at a particular cognitive, behavioral, or emotional skill, then we need to improve this skill to boost our mental health. For some reason, the field of positive psychology rarely makes use of this important insight. But it has been shown that turning your happiness weaknesses into strengths means you will have more skills and, as a result, greater happiness.

The field of learning science shows that personalized learning approaches far outperform one-size-fits-all approaches. A personalized approach can help you learn skills that you’re weak at, skills you’re excited about, and skills that build on each other in important ways. Personalized approaches result in faster, more fun, and more effective learning because they focus on your unique needs, interests, and abilities.

How do you figure out your happiness strengths and weaknesses? Consider how well you demonstrate the following skills in your daily life:

Positive thoughts about the self

  • Acceptance: The ability to accept yourself and your emotions non-judgmentally.
  • Positive self-views: The ability to see yourself as a good, worthwhile human being.
  • Clarity: The ability to understand what you value, how you feel, and who you are.
  • Positive reappraisal: The ability to change your thoughts in ways that help you experience longer-lasting, more intense, or more frequent positive emotion.

Positive thoughts about others

  • Rejection tolerance: The ability to perceive the actions of others as inclusive rather than rejecting.
  • Empathy: The ability to put yourself in another person’s shoes and see the world from their perspective.
  • Gratitude: The ability to be thankful for the experiences and people you have in your life.
  • Letting go: The ability to stop fretting and ruminating about negative interpersonal situations.

Positive behaviors involving the self

  • Planning: The ability to develop effective strategies and take actions that progress you towards your goals.
  • Growth mindset: The belief that your strengths can be developed through hard work and dedication.
  • Self-care: The ability to resist engaging in unhealthy behaviors (drugs, alcohol, shopping, or overeating) as a means to increase happiness.
  • Prioritizing positivity: The ability to make time for, and consistently schedule, activities that you enjoy.

Positive behaviors involving others

  • Kindness: The ability to be friendly, generous, and considerate of others.
  • Autonomy: The ability to resist the influence of others, make your own independent decisions, and take action based on your unique values.
  • Expressivity: The ability to easily communicate and share intimate aspects of yourself with others.
  • Assertiveness: The ability to stand up for yourself, speak up, and communicate your needs.

Once you know your happiness strengths and weaknesses, choose just one skill that you believe is a weakness for you. It may be obvious to you right away. If it’s not, think about whether you tend to have more difficulty with thoughts versus behaviors, or self- vs. other-related skills. Or, if you tend to be poor at all the skills focusing on positive thoughts about the self, start by focusing on one of those.

It’s important not to try to develop too many skills at once. If you focus on too many things, you’ll have a difficult time making progress on any of them. But if you feel up to it, you can choose one more skill that you think you would really enjoy practicing. Maybe you have been meaning to prioritize positive activities, and you would really love to spend more time doing fun things.

Once you have decided which skills to work on, think about how and when you will practice. Plan to practice building these skills at least a little bit every week for a few months–and see if you get a happiness boost.

We Need To Talk About The Invisible Cost Of Abortion Clinic Violence

A few weeks ago, I went to my friendly local Planned Parenthood to have my IUD removed and a new one put in. It was an appointment I’d been dreading, because while I love low-cost long-term birth control, my experience of having that first IUD inserted was — and I don’t use this word lightly — traumatic.

It’s important to note that lots of people feel next to nothing when they have an IUD put in. Most report a little nip as the doctor slips the inserter through their cervix, then some mild cramping, AND then on with their day — off to have shameless, fear-free sex with a willing partner and not have babies as a result.

That was not the case for me. For me, having an IUD put in was absolutely excruciating. Annual gynecological exams have never been comfortable for me, thanks to a pelvic pain condition that can make penetration of any kind hurt. But the IUD insertion was a whole new world of pain.

There’s something about cervical pain that, for those of us who have never given birth — and maybe for those who have — registers as frightening. Even when I know why it’s happening, even when I know it’s not a sign of danger or of grievous harm, it terrifies me. The pain, which is somehow at once sharp and also dull, is so deep and so far inside my body, and I can’t get to it — I can’t put my hands on it to stop it.

I didn’t want to go through this procedure alone… But here’s the thing: you can’t have someone there with you at Planned Parenthood. For security reasons.

When I had my first IUD put in, I cried out and squirmed and tears spilled out of me, even as I assured the understandably taken aback OB, who suggested stopping, that she should continue. My dad, who had come with me on the off chance that I wouldn’t be able to drive myself home, which of course I couldn’t, said he could hear me screaming through the wall as he sat in the waiting room. After it was done, when the doctor was out and I was left on the table panting and cramping and residually terrified, she joked, “Thank god you’re my last patient — you’d have scared everyone out of my waiting room.”

Like I said, I don’t use the word “traumatic” lightly.

Five years and zero accidental pregnancies later, it was time to get that IUD, which one of my friends nicknamed Robocop, replaced. Despite the pain I experienced, I’ve become an IUD evangelist. For those who can afford the upfront cost or can get it covered by health insurance, the IUD is by far the best combination of reliability and cost efficiency — no small matter when you’re talking about birth control. In my case, the pain was bad, but it was worth it. But the worth-it-ness didn’t diminish the pain, and didn’t calm my fear of going through that pain again. I kept thinking about how awful that day five years ago had been, and I spent the 10 days preceding my Planned Parenthood appointment with a ball of dread throbbing in my lower stomach.

I didn’t know if I’d be granted the paracervical block, a localized anesthetic injection that I’d requested. I didn’t know if it would help. One thing I did know was that I didn’t want to go through this procedure alone. It had helped to have my dad nearby the last time, though I remember wishing that I could have held someone’s hand and had them tell me they loved me and that it would be over soon when it felt like I was breaking in two. So, I asked one of my best friends to be there with me, and she agreed.

But here’s the thing: you can’t have someone there with you at Planned Parenthood. For security reasons.

It doesn’t matter if you’re getting an abortion or receiving a positive HIV diagnosis, or just getting your IUD changed out: you can’t have anyone in the room with you. Or even in the waiting room. If someone wants to come with you to support you, they have to sit in a separate holding room with all the other husbands and mothers and boyfriends and sisters and friends. For security reasons.

Everyone passes through the metal detector and has their bags rifled through, but only patients can pass through that holding room and on into the waiting room. And once you’re there, you wait — in my case, crying with nerves — alone. The nurses and OBs are lovely, caring, patient, helpful people, some of whom are risking their safety to do the work they do, and they do that work very well. But no matter how caring and lovely and patient they are, they’re still not your husband, or your mother, or your boyfriend, or your sister, or your friend. They surely don’t want it to be this way, but this is how it is: When you’re at Planned Parenthood, you’re on your own. For security reasons.

Of course, in my panic at my impending uterine incursion, I’d forgotten about this. I’ve been to that Planned Parenthood half a dozen times before, but I’d forgotten about the holding room. As I sat in the waiting room, frantically texting my friend who was stuck on the other side of the wall — and after I asked the lovely, caring, patient, helpful women behind the desk if maybe they would make an exception for me — I thought about the “why.” Why was I texting my friend through a wall instead of holding her hand and making feeble jokes about vaginas to distract myself?

Clinic violence is the why. The long list of cruel and creative ways that anti-women, anti-sex, anti-choice terrorists have sought to interfere, to intimidate, to harm and hurt and frighten abortion providers and their patients, is why there’s a metal detector, why there’s a separate waiting room, why there’s a wall.

This is what clinic violence does. Clinic violence puts walls between people in need and the people who love and support them.

Clinic violence and harassment take many forms, as I wrote after last November’s Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado Springs:

Extremists have [thrown] butyric acid into clinics, glued clinic locks shut, locked themselves into clinic property using items such as bicycle locks or chains, drilled holes into clinic roofs so that the clinic floods, invaded clinics, vandalized clinics, made threatening phone calls, tried to persuade patients to go to fake clinics, put spikes in driveways, talked outside clinics about bomb-making chemicals, laid down on sidewalks, jumped on cars, camped out in front of clinics for multiple-day stretches, and sent decoy patients into clinics to disrupt business.

And then, of course, there are the bombings, the arson attack, and the assassination of abortion providers. In 2015, there were at least four incidents of arson and, over Thanksgiving weekend, that shooting at the clinic in Colorado Springs killed three people and injured nine.

Given the risks, clinics are right to do what they can to protect their workers and their patients, to implement security measures like bullet-proof glass, security guards, and metal detectors. And, in the case of my Planned Parenthood, a separate waiting room that prevents providers from coming into contact with anyone but the patient. You can’t risk that someone’s husband, mother, boyfriend, sister, or friend is there to harm the nurses or the doctors or the patients.

This is what clinic violence does. Clinic violence puts walls between people in need and the people who love and support them. It leaves you holding your sweaty phone and taking shallow, shaky breaths — instead of holding your friend’s hand and cracking vag jokes. It leaves the people who have just had abortions curled up in hospital chairs alone with their own thoughts while their loved ones wait downstairs, wondering how they’re doing. It leaves teenagers alone with their feet in the stirrups for the first time and grandmothers alone with the mammogram machine pressing into them. This is what clinic violence does.

I did get the cervical block, but it didn’t help much, because the injection of the anesthesia was itself enormously painful for me. It was still a traumatic experience. I still screamed, and they still heard me in the waiting room. Tears still spilled out of me, and I couldn’t stop crying for about half an hour after Robocop 1 was relieved of its duty and Robocop 2 had taken its place. The OB was still taken aback at how much pain I was in, and rushed to clear away the bloodied instruments in an attempt to make me feel better. I still desperately wanted to hold someone’s hand, and have them tell me that they loved me and that it would be over soon.

The point of clinic violence and harassment is intimidation. The goal is to make doctors and nurses afraid to practice, and patients afraid to receive health care. In some cases, as David Cohen and Krysten Connon note in their book “Living In The Cross Hairs: The Untold Stories Of Anti-Abortion Terrorism,” it frightens doctors and nurses away from abortion provision altogether, and it has surely kept would-be patients from braving the “protesters” and the risks of entering a clinic.

But even for those who make the choice to go into the clinic, the intimidation persists. Even for people who live in relatively abortion-friendly places, like New York City, clinic violence in less tolerant places takes its toll AND extracts an emotional tax. It’s in the metal detectors and the uniformed guards and in the walls between you and the people who love you. I was safe in that clinic, and knew that. But I was scared, and in pain, and the fear and pain were made far worse by the fact that I was alone. I was safe, and I was treated — but I still paid the price for living in a country where my healthcare is demonized, criminalized, and under attack. I had to pay an emotional toll for my safe and legal treatment. Which is, after all, the whole point.

Mickey And Minnie Are Crying

You probably have seen the picture of Mickey and Minnie, those two blissful rodents, dancing together along with the Disney employees out in front of the Disneyland castle or in front of the Magic Kingdom. For years, many people have associated the Magic Kingdom and Orlando, Fl as being “the happiest place on earth.” Here you have Mickey and Minnie, and Donald Duck, Snow White and the seven dwarfs. What more could you need to feel to safe with these benevolent beings?

Yet that sense of innocence and happiness was abruptly and violently altered by the tragic and senseless mass shooting at the Pulse Nightclub and the very sad incident of the two year old boy being dragged away by an alligator at the Grand Floridian Hotel lagoon.

No doubt, many residents of Orlando are probably still in a state of shock, feeling numb and perhaps overwhelmed by the recent events that have occurred. Yet, in the aftermath of these tragedies, we have witnessed great compassion and support for those who were affected by this violence from local law enforcement and the local community.

Yes, the attack clearly was aimed at LGBTQ people along with Latino and other demographic populations. The reality of 50 people shot dead, including the killer, and 53 wounded is difficult to comprehend. Still harder to appreciate was the fact that some of the family members of the deceased had problems finding churches, houses of worship , that would be willing to facilitate space for funeral and memorial services. You really have to wonder how religious someone is when they refuse to help honor and bury the dead?

I feel sad for what is happening in Orlando. I have pleasant memories of drilling there as a Naval Reservist Chaplain in the 1990′s. I flew into the Orlando International Airport quite frequently, drove down Orange Avenue through downtown past the prominent water fountain in the city park. I also know that this is a very challenging time for my colleagues in ministry with the Florida Conference of The United Church Of Christ. They along with other clergy from various religious traditions are busy ministering to the survivors of this great tragedy.

What can emerge from this heinous event? Could we expect real leadership from the Congress regarding preventing firearms from getting into the hands of people who shouldn’t have access to them ? Could we look for a ground swell of support for all people including LGBTQ, Muslims and others instead of continuing to pit groups of people against one another ? If we proceed with the latter option, then I guess terrorism truly wins.

The picture of Mickey and Minnie idyllically dancing out if front of the Magic Kingdom speaks to the joy and happiness that children can experience as well as adults experiencing a moment of child-like innocence. All of us, from time to time, need to find that sense of calm , that overwhelming sense of wonder and excitement, what the Germans would refer to as Gemutlichkeit.

Right now, the world needs to endorse a greater wave of warmth, closeness and belonging. The events of Orlando painfully remind us that when you think there is a lot of light, unfortunately darkness can emerge without any warning.

We need to stand with those who are suffering and proclaim a loud no to terrorism, xenophobia, homophobia and all forms of discrimination and oppression.

The dance will continue to go on. May we be graceful dancers, being agents of grace to one and all.

Screw Skinny. How To Set Better Health Goals

2016-06-21-1466525943-776784-AnnaliciaLynnHeadshot.jpg

By Annalicia of YogaAndPilatesOnline.com

Sipping a dirty chai at a crowed café, I overheard a woman talking to her friend.

“Wow!” she said, scrolling through her Facebook feed, “It looks like Kelly has lost a ton of weight.” She added, in an inauthentic cheerful tone, ripe with jealousy, “Good for her!”

That short exchange stayed with me. I couldn’t help but wonder how Kelly had lost the weight. Was she going through a dark time? Was depression suppressing her appetite? Was she eating the same unhealthy food, but depriving herself of volume, constantly hungry? Was she binging and purging? Was her mind consumed with calories, anxious about what she would order out to dinner with friends?

All these were likely. Very likely.

It seems when we blindly praise skinny, we risk praising pain.

Why are we so quick to admire a result without knowing the cost? To fully honor an achievement, we must honor the path.

My hope for Kelly is that her weight loss was a natural byproduct of her healthier relationship with food, exercise, and her body. Wouldn’t it be lovely if she’s become more empowered around exercise, more in tune with her body’s messages, and more in touch with what food made her feel good?

I don’t know Kelly. I don’t know her journey. And so, it’s doesn’t feel helpful to say, “Good for her!” Instead, “Kelly, I hope you feel great and continue to feel better!”

A dear friend once told me about a study done on interactions between adults and young girls. I don’t remember the specifics of the findings. But I don’t need to. Why? I see the essence play out often. In fact, I notice my tendency to do it…greet young girls with compliments about their looks.

“You look so cute.”
“That’s a cute dress.”
“Cute hair!”

Don’t get me wrong, who doesn’t love being noticed for the beauty and radiance they’re emanating? However, pressure inevitably builds for bodily perfection when that’s the main thing you get noticed for, over and over again.

Now, I make it a practice to greet people with statements that let them know I’m happy to see them no matter what they look like.

“It’s great to see you! What’s been going on in your world?”
“It’s so nice to reconnect! Have you been reading any good books lately?”
“I’m so happy you’re here. You look like you feel great!”

I love this quote from Adele…

“I don’t want to be on the cover of Playboy or Vogue. I want to be on the cover of Rolling Stone or Q. I’m not a trend-setter. I’m a singer. I’d rather weigh a ton and make an amazing album than look like Nicole Richie and do a shit album. My aim in life has never been to be skinny.”
-Adele

In general, as a culture, why do we assume a main goal, for everyone, should be to be skinny? It’s madness!

Adele’s statement emanates profound clarity. It says, “I know what I value. I know what I’m passionate about. I’m happiest when I align my thought, word, and deed with my unique gifts and desires. It would be out of integrity to do otherwise.”

It’s not virtuous to beat yourself up in order to submit, without question, to default, cultural standards. Especially when those standards are saturated with dysfunction.

“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”
-Jiddu Krishnamurti

Instead, my wish for you is that you’ll give yourself permission to shift your health goals from focusing on how you look to focusing on how you feel.

This is what I’ve had to do. Otherwise, I probably would have quit teaching yoga and Pilates a long time ago. I was putting way too much pressure on myself to look a certain way. It was exhausting.

But then I realized…

If you’re skinny and exhausted, you’re exhausted.
If you’re skinny and uncomfortable, you’re uncomfortable.
If you’re skinny and insecure, you’re insecure.
If you’re skinny and neurotic, you’re neurotic.
If you’re skinny and stressed, you’re stressed.

My point? Feelings trump all.

It’s time to prioritize. It’s time to focus on what truly matters. It’s time to shift from dysfunction to function.

It’s time to set a new standard for young girls. Let’s assume the goal is inspired. Let’s assume the goal is kindness. Not skinny.

Food Safety: The Science of Keeping Food Safe

Food Safety: The Science of Keeping Food Safe

  • Used Book in Good Condition
Food safety is a modern concept. Remarkably, it is only in the last 200 years that such concepts as foodborne germs, and the means of combating them (such as antiseptics and refrigeration), have been popularised. Yet in the 21st Century, consumers in the developed world do not accept that the food which they purchase and consume might carry a risk of making them ill – that our food should be safe is something we all take for granted. Food safety is a multi-faceted subject, using microbiology,

The Diaspora Strikes Back

The Diaspora Strikes Back

In The Diaspora Strikes Back the eminent ethnic and cultural studies scholar Juan Flores flips the process on its head: what happens to the home country when it is being constantly fed by emigrants returning from abroad? He looks at how ‘Nuyoricans’ (Puerto Rican New Yorkers) have transformed the home country, introducing hip hop and modern New York culture to the Caribbean island. While he focuses on New York and Mayaguez (in Puerto Rico), the model is broadly applicable. Indians introducing contemporary British culture to India; New York Dominicans bringing slices of New York culture back to the Dominican Republic; Mexicans bringing LA culture (from fast food to heavy metal) back to Guadalajara and Monterrey. This ongoing process is both massive and global, and Flores’ novel account will command a significant audience across disciplines.

Latin Night Is Back At Gay Bars In Orlando — Where It Belongs

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the first major Latin Night at a gay club in this city since last week’s mass shooting, two survivors took the stage.

“I’ve decided to devote all my time and energy to go to any rally, any function, to fight for the Latin community and gay rights,” said one of them, a young man wearing a backward baseball cap. “You can’t be scared, because the more you’re scared, the more he wins.”

Kenya Michaels, a former contestant on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” who’d performed at Pulse nightclub on the Sunday of the shooting, spoke next.

“Today we celebrate life,” she said in Spanish. “Take advantage of today, and tell whoever you love that you love them.”

It was a bittersweet Thursday night at Parliament House, a gay nightclub and hotel complex sitting on the beachfront of Rock Lake.

When Omar Mateen stormed into Pulse nightclub with two semi-automatic weapons, killing 49 people and leaving dozens of others wounded, he didn’t just attack the LGBT community — he picked Latin Night. Roughly 7 in 10 people killed had Spanish last names.

It’s unclear what Mateen’s motives were for picking that night for his attack. What was clear on Thursday night at Orlando’s oldest gay club was that his actions wouldn’t stop Latin Night from continuing.

Outside, police officers guarded the entrance to Parliament House beneath a sign reading “We are Pulse/Unbreakable.” Security guards scanned metal-detecting wands over customers who stuffed $ 10 and $ 20 bills into a bowl of donations for Pulse employees.

These added security measures weren’t considered necessary before June 12, when Mateen walked into Pulse with two semi-automatic weapons and fired into the crowd.

The tragedy weighed heavily as the weekend approached and members of Orlando’s LGBT community took their first tentative steps toward rebuilding their nightlife.

There were tearful moments, punctuated by speeches. Grief counselors offered free services to those in attendance.

But it was also a joyful night. A throng of brown, black and white faces — all the colors of the human rainbow — danced and cheered to the sounds of salsa and merengue. Drag queens strutted the catwalk, lips sparkling, as the cheering crowd offered up dollar bills. Topless men with bulging muscles pulled beers.

Puerto Rican merengue singer Melina León, who had performed at Pulse, returned to pay her respects.

Standing on stage before the two survivors, León performed a ballad. She insisted she’d sing just one song and didn’t feel up to playing upbeat music like merengue, but after a round of prodding from the crowd, she relented.

Her fans surrounded the stage, cheering and singing along.

Pulse’s owner, Barbara Poma, has promised to rebuild Pulse. In the meantime, Latin Night in Orlando lives on.

What If Hillary And Donald Fell In Love?

Have you ever been swept off your feet, only to realize after a little while that you fell for someone with whom you really had not much in common? Someone so different from who you are that you couldn’t help to question How in the world did this happen? Well, it’s happened to many of us, and sadly, it is still more prevalent than we think.

In a Great Britain survey, over a third of 1,500 adults sampled, admitted being married to the wrong person. Shocking isn’t it? But it gets worst… 42% of people using the Tinder dating app said in a GlobalWebIndex research that they already had a partner but, just kept looking…

That got us thinking. How could we coach a couple that would come to us for help after realizing they fell in love with the “wrong person?” What if the couple were a real mismatch?

2016-06-20-1466436222-9871597-HillaryDonald.jpg

What If Hillary and Donald fell in love?

Like coaching Hillary and Donald… Here’s how we think it would go:

Mario: “How can we help you?”

Hillary: “Donald and I differ on too many issues now, and we both wonder if it can be reconciled. Quite frankly this is making me question if he’s the right partner for me.”

Diane: “Well this sounds like a very blunt assessment. Let’s start with you Donald. What do you think Hillary’s referring to?”

Donald: “I don’t know what she’s talking about. I think I’m a great partner. In fact, if you knew me, you’d probably say that I’m among the best you’ve ever met. She’ll never have a better partner than me!”

Hillary: “Here we go again…”

Mario: “Okay, let’s try this… Donald, what would be your #1 reproach to Hillary?”

Donald: “I think she’s not transparent enough. It’s as if she has stuff she keeps hidden on a personal server somewhere…”

Hillary: “I told him many times that I will happily divulge anything he wants to see once he too unveils his personal stuff.”

Diane: “Alright then. What about you Hillary. What’s you top grievance with Donald?”

Hillary: “I never know where he stands. He speaks from both sides of his mouth and keeps changing his opinions all the time!”

Donald: “I never, never, do that. Believe me! I’m just showing flexibility at times, that’s all. Hillary is not a flexible person. Believe me!

Hillary: “See how he is? He’s very condescending with women to say the least…”

Donald: “She keeps playing that women card with me. She knows NOBODY respects women more than me. NOBODY. I think because she’s part of the establishment, she’s used to get it her way all the time.”

Diane: “Wow… Let’s try the gentleness side of things… Couples all have cute loving nicknames they like to use with one another in their intimacy. I’m curious to know yours. Hillary, how do call Donald?”

Hillary: “The Apprentice.”

Donald: “I like to call her Crooked.”

Mario: “Okay guys, it seems like we’ll have to leave your disagreements aside for now. But before you had your differences, there must have been something you guys agreed upon, something both of you wanted to have. What was it?”

Hillary: “Well we wanted a better future for ourselves.”

Donald: “Yes, ‘Make Our Lives Great Again’!

Hillary: “Yes! And we both had this dream for a new home. You know a nice house all painted in white with an iron fence around it… Then, he changed his mind like he always does, and decided he would build a wall instead of the fence to protect us from immigrants and Muslims… And he wanted me to pay for it! That’s when things started to go sour.”

Donald: “Yep, I remember. That was bad. Worst than a bad hair day…”

Diane: “So you’re done with your “white house” dream?”

Hillary: “Oh hell no! I still want it, but I’d rather move in with a womanizer than a racist!”

Donald: “I continue to think the wall is a great idea. Anyway, I still want my “white house” too. And I’ll have it with someone who truly appreciates my interior design taste. You know I have the greatest interior design taste don’t you? I mean the GREATEST! Have you seen pictures of Mar-a-Lago?”

Mario: “Thank you guys, I think we’ll call it a day…”

Nobody ever said that individuals needed to be identical in order to have a functional relationship. In fact we believe a “Hillary / Donald” type of couple could be viable, provided both parties have a deep understanding of Who They Are and What They Are Looking For. When we have that in place, it shields us from making 2 major mistakes:
1. Being blinded by someone’s true colors.
2. Getting involved with somebody so “alien,” that He/She will eventually look to us like a different specie.

Charlton Heston, Planet of the Apes, 1968, 20th Century Fox

And just to be clear, this is not about tastes. Tastes are always arbitrary. After all, who’s to say vanilla ice cream is better than chocolate? And this is not about novelty either. Novelty is good, but at one point, every novelty becomes obsolete. Remember iTunes?

So to have a long lasting, blissful relationship, let’s all think Love Match rather than Mismatch. The first step as we highlighted above is to understand Who You Are. This will require a bit of work, but it is highly important to help you recognize your Love Match or reconcile any differences in your existing couple. Take some time to identify the 4 areas that define Who You Are: your Gratitudes, your Beliefs, your Values and your Priorities. We call that your GBVPs.

As a second step, make a list of What You’re Looking For of your next partner. If you already have, it’s worth going back to your list and check if it is still relevant! If you haven’t, try to be as precise as possible. And one last thing: go beyond the physical attributes of the person because that’s often how we tend to get blinded… Beauty is highly important but it transcends body features.

A Letter To The Man Who Left Me

Dad,

I’m trying so hard not to be angry with you right now. You left us. You left us without saying goodbye. You didn’t check to make sure every single thing in the house was unplugged and the heat was turned down to subzero temperatures. Your heart stopped beating without a warning, without a heads-up or without one last chance to sit in the dark and listen to The Rolling Stones.

You left Izzi, the adorable mutt I rescued before conveniently moving to a new city and leaving her to keep you company against your will. She’s lost without you to share the recliner and feed her cheese. She no longer gets to go for truck rides or tromps through the woods in the middle of a Tuesday.

You left Chelsea, your best bud and middle daughter. Because of her autism she doesn’t understand why you did it and where you are, all she knows is that things are harder now and everyone acts strangely.

You left Abby, the youngest progeny who was not ready to be without a dad. You also lied to her when you promised a few short months ago to be there to walk her down the aisle… if she gets married (if any of us do), because you know we are all adamant on keeping our last name. And some people don’t like that, as we’ve learned.

You left mom. You left her in a big house, with a big yard and a lot of big responsibilities. You left Gram — she’s 95, and that just seems cruel. You left your sister and the rest of our family. You left an unbelievably large group of friends. I didn’t even know it was possible to have so many. The line for your funeral wound around the outside of the building as people waited in line for an hour to bid you adieu. It was touching and heartbreaking and truly beautiful — but I’m still angry.

Also, you left me.

You left us. I know I should take comfort in the fact that you left us with each other, and sometimes I do, but you still left us, and that hurts.

You left behind more than people. You left behind your camping gear, and all of your hunting paraphernalia that I hated so much – what the hell are we supposed to do with it? Every time I look at it now, I feel guilty that I didn’t listen more carefully when you talked about the things you loved. I feel guilty for the fact that there are many times I could have been a better daughter. You left your truck Ruby with an empty bag of chips, a sweat stained camo hat, and a handwritten list of cell phone numbers. I’m number two. You left behind half-finished home projects, and a small motorbike I can’t even picture you riding with your huge shoulders and solid frame from years of power lifting and baseball.

You left behind a goddamn legacy. You lived a big life. You had a gift of making everyone feel special and every day feel like an adventure. I had forgotten what this really means and how important it is until now. Each snow day with you was magical, each hike an experience and every cookout felt like the event of the year. You gave the best nicknames and delivered the perfect one-liners like it was nothing. You had so many friends and ‘adopted’ children that I often felt jealous because you were supposed to be just mine. I realize now that you were teaching me what it means to always make people feel like they matter, because they do. You did this every day.

I cannot eat the last Ziploc bag of Bluegill in the freezer because it is the last one you caught for me, the real last one. There have been many times when I needed to use cash, but I still cannot part with the last crisp twenty-dollar bill you slipped me for gas money and instead head to the ATM to extract some twenty-dollar bills that didn’t come from you. The funny to do list that I stole from your notebook, because your brilliant misspellings never fail to make me laugh, is now a treasure to be folded carefully and kept in my box of special things.

I’m writing this letter because I picked up the phone to call you and forgot. I was driving unnaturally slowly and remembered how I used to pick on you for driving at your country pace. You always said it was so that we could bond longer.

I still think this may be your best April Fools’ Day prank yet. You’ve fooled me most of my thirty-one years and decided to go all out this time. I’ll call home and you’ll pick up with an enthusiastic “Crunchal, how’s my number one?” and we’ll check the boxes of all the usual topics of conversation. I’ll ask you if you’re making healthy choices and you’ll say “Welllll it’s the holidays,” or “Welllll it’s picnic season,” or “Welllll your mom keeps baking and leaving it lie around.” You’ll ask me when I’m coming home and I’ll tell you how busy I am. We will hang up and talk again soon.

I’m still really angry with you for leaving me, but I’m happy to carry you with me, even just little bits at a time. I feel your smile when I tell a dumb joke. I hear your laugh when I say something that is most likely inappropriate, but we both know to be true. I try to do more of the things you’d approve of. I try to do less whining; I know you hated that. I try to be present and make sure people know they matter. I see you in me when I look at my giant traps and my tree trunk legs that were built for squatting with a barbell on my back. I carry you with me knowing that I’m lucky to have had you in my life in the first place.

Thank you for teaching me. Thank you for living a big life and encouraging me to do the same. Thank you for being funny and weird. Thank you for teaching me to love to sweat. You’ve given me a love and passion for fitness and the drive to do it on my own terms. You’ve saved me from a life full of office tedium, fluorescent lighting and pointless meetings. Thank you for being my dad.

I miss you. I love you. Thank you. And also, fuck you, just a little bit,

Asian Paleo: Gluten Free Recipes for Classic Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, and Filipino Comfort Foods

Asian Paleo: Gluten Free Recipes for Classic Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, and Filipino Comfort Foods

Most of us never try to cook our own Asian food at home since there’s usually a plethora of dine-in or take-out options near our hometowns. Gone are the days when the Chinese restaurant was the only Asian place in town; Millennials now have their choice of Japanese/sushi bars, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean barbecue, even Mongolian and Vietnamese fare! While these restaurants offer much in the way of deliciousness, they often cater to the American palate-and the American diet. Dishes are filled with sugars, syrups, and starches, which don’t correspond with a Paleo-style eating plan. Never fear, “Asian Paleo: Gluten Free Recipes for Classic Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, and Filipino Comfort Foods” is here! In this book, you’ll find: The benefits of shopping at your local Asian market The final word on Miso (guess what – it IS Paleo-friendly) Quick and Easy ways to make delicious Asian food at home (including a great Rice substitute) Authentic recipes that are true to their native roots (Like Adobo and Curried Coconut Crab straight from the Philippines) Dishes from China like Sesame “Noodles” and Dumplings (Yes you CAN have Dumplings – we weren’t just teasing you with the cover image!) Japanese Food like Beef Tataki and Yakitori Thai favorites like Som Tam (Green Papaya Salad) and Pork Pad Thai And much more! Grab your wok and some chopsticks and let’s get to eating!
