Jerry Bruckheimer: Connecticut, February, 2008

2017-01-22-1485068385-852702-Kindsight2JerryBruckheimerFeb2008NorwalkCTimageonly.jpg

While doing stills on Terminator 3 in 2002, I get a call to work on the upcoming filming of Bad Boys 2, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Michael Bay. I’ve never worked for Jerry before nor have I sought this job. As I have the opportunity to observe him, I learn that Jerry makes it his business to know what’s going on not only in the many nooks and crannies of the film industry, but in society and culture as well. Who’s doing what, what the latest trends are, and who is the best at what they do. My first day on set I see this soft spoken, unassuming man, arguably the most powerful producer in the world, with a Nikon camera snapping photos around the set. Not all the time, but random moments when the spirit moves him. I check out the Pearl Harbor making of book and see some of his pictures in there, and I’m impressed with the quality of his work. During filming, Jerry comes to set on and off, between tending to his many other projects. While there, he is keenly interested in the goings on and talks with people from many departments — director, writers, electricians, wardrobe and more — it’s clear that he is passionately involved in the filmmaking process. I come to understand that a key element of Jerry’s success is in his bringing talented people together and letting them do their thing. Since Bad Boys 2 I’ve worked on several of Jerry’s films and have had a great time talking shop during his visits to the set. Today I’m working on “Confessions of a Shopaholic.” I’m on set covering the scene when I sense a presence to my left. I turn and there’s Jerry, camera in hand, lining up a shot, doing what he loves.

Sweating In A Sauna Might Help Keep Your Brain Healthy

Regular visits to the sauna can help lower the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease as well as dying of heart ailments, a Finnish study suggests.

Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland found a link between sauna visits and memory diseases after following more than 2,300 middle-aged Finnish men for more than 20 years.

In the study, men who went to the sauna four to seven times a week were found 66 percent less likely to be diagnosed with dementia, and 65 percent less likely with Alzheimer’s disease, than those taking a sauna once a week.

“We have taken into account other lifestyle factors, like physical activity and socioeconomic factors … There is an independent effect of sauna on these outcomes,” said Jari Laukkanen, senior researcher and a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Eastern Finland.

He noted that the study only indicated an association between the sauna and memory diseases, and the findings would have to be fleshed out through further studies with different age groups, other nationalities and women.

The findings, published in the journal Age and Ageing in December, suggested however that the health benefits of sauna could extend from the heart to the brain.

Previous results of the follow-up study have shown that men who spent time in a sauna seven times a week were less likely to die of heart problems, compared to those who only partook once a week. “In the sauna, the heart rate increases and we start to sweat. This is a bit like physical exercise,” Laukkonen said.

“After sauna, you may have lower blood pressure, and blood pressure is an important risk factor in cardiovascular and memory diseases. This may be one possible explanation for our findings,” Laukkanen said.

Regular bathers at the Finnish Sauna Society, which has around 4,200 members in Helsinki, agree that good health many be linked to the relaxing effects of sauna visits.

Club members go to the sauna several times a week, and in winter cool off with a swim in the icy Baltic Sea.

“I feel relaxed after sauna, and it’s a place where I can have a nice conversation with my friends. The social aspect is the best thing about sauna, when you get older,” Hannu Pitkanen, a senior member of the sauna society, told Reuters.

Probiotics and Bioactive Carbohydrates in Colon Cancer Management

Probiotics and Bioactive Carbohydrates in Colon Cancer Management

This book describes the dietary habits (such as use of probiotics, synbiotics, prebiotics and dietary fiber) that could modify and reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). The book will be of practical and scientific use to academicians, research scholars, students, health professionals, nutritionists, etc. and could support the cause of preventing CRC by adopting smarter food habits. CRC is the third leading cause of death, in terms of both incidence and mortality, among men and women. Excess consumption of red and processed meat, roasted coffee, etc. have shown an increase in CRC, indicating that compounds formed in food containing free amino acids and sugars interact at elevated temperatures to form mutagens or carcinogens. Standard treatment options for CRC include invasive surgery and chemotherapy or radiation. Several lifestyle and dietary factors could prevent this ailment. Probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics that are found in functional foods, health supplements and nutraceuticals and short chain fatty acids that are formed in the colon as a result of microbial fermentation of undigested bioactive carbohydrates by Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus inhibit colonic epithelial cells and minimize inflammation, thereby exhibiting immunomodulatory effects. This book tries to address the novel unexplored benefits and mechanism of action of these functional foods.

Watch 6-Year-Old Sophie Cruz Give One Of The Best Speeches Of The Women’s March

Young immigration activist Sophie Cruz amazed a crowd of hundreds of thousands with her rousing speech of hope and love at the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday.

Joined on stage by her parents and younger sister, 6-year-old Cruz told the crowd that she had joined the demonstration to make “a chain of love to protect our families.”

“Let us fight with love, faith and courage so that our families will not be destroyed,” Cruz said. “I also want to tell the children not to be afraid, because we are not alone. There are still many people that have their hearts filled with love. Let’s keep together and fight for the rights. God is with us.”

Cruz made headlines in 2015 when on behalf of her undocumented parents, she bravely asked the Pope to support the protection of DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents).

Cruz also delivered her speech in Spanish, ending with a rousing chant of “Si se puede! Si se puede!”

Cruz melted hearts on Saturday, but more importantly, she’s broadening minds. Her powerful message about the future of the country wasn’t just a touching moment ― it was history in the making.

9 Things Passionate People Do Differently

2017-01-19-1484866370-6450458-9ThingsPassionatePeopleDoDifferentlyHP.jpeg

Do you have enough passion in your life? Passion is the difference between playing the piano and being a pianist; it’s who you are, not just what you do. Passion makes you leap out of bed in the morning, eager to start your day.

Dr. Robert Vallerand at the University of Quebec has studied passion more than anyone, and he asserts that passion is self-defining. According to Vallerand, “Passion is a strong inclination towards a self-defining activity that people love, that they consider important, and in which they devote significant amounts of time and energy.”

“Passion is the genesis of genius.” – Galileo

It’s important to note that passion doesn’t require expertise–although there is a correlation, it’s not a given. Vallerand and two other researchers studied 187 musicians and found that those who focused on perfecting their performance–what Vallerand calls “mastery–developed a higher level of expertise than those who focused on merely being better than other musicians. If passion defines you, it makes sense that your personal best will be about you and no one else.

So what does passion look and feel like? A great way to understand passion is to consider what makes passionate people different from everybody else.

1. Passionate people are obsessed.
Put simply, passionate people are obsessed with their muse, and I don’t mean that in an unhealthy OCD sort of way. I’m talking about a positive, healthy obsession, the kind that inspired the quote, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” No matter what else is going on, their thoughts keep returning to their passion. Not because they feel burdened and pressured by it, but because they’re just so dang excited about it. They’re obsessed with their muse because it inspires them and makes them happy.

2. They don’t waste time. You won’t find passionate people wandering around a park all afternoon playing Pokemon Go. They don’t have time to be bothered with things that don’t matter or things that just kill time. They devote every minute available to their passion, and it’s not a sacrifice, because there’s nothing else they’d rather be doing.

3. They’re optimistic. Passionate people are always focused on what can be rather than what is. They’re always chasing their next goal with the unwavering belief that they’ll achieve it. You know how it feels when you’re looking forward to a really special event? Passionate people feel like that every day.

4. They’re early risers.
Passionate people are far too eager to dive into their days to sleep in. It’s not that they don’t like to sleep; they’d just much rather be pursuing their passion. When the rooster crows, their minds are flooded with ideas and excitement for the day ahead.

5. They’re willing to take big risks.
How much you want something is reflected in how much you’re willing to risk. Nobody is going to lay it all on the line for something they’re only mildly interested in. Passionate people, on the other hand, are willing to risk it all.

6. They only have one speed–full tilt.
Passionate people don’t do anything half-heartedly. If they’re going, they’re going full tilt until they cross the finish line or crash. If they’re relaxed and still, they’re relaxed and still. There’s no in between.

7. They talk about their passions all the time.
Again, we’re talking about people whose passions are inseparable from who they are, and you couldn’t form much of a relationship with them if they couldn’t be real about who they are, right? It’s not that they don’t understand that you don’t share their obsession; they just can’t help themselves. If they acted differently, they’d be playing a role rather than being authentic.

8. They’re highly excitable.
You know those people who probably wouldn’t get excited if an alien spaceship landed in their front yard? Yeah, that’s not how passionate people operate. It’s not that they’re never calm, or even bored. It’s just that it takes less to get them excited, so they get excited more frequently and stay excited longer. One theory is that they devote their energy to just one or two things, so they make more progress, and that momentum fuels their excitement.

9. They’re all about their work.
Passionate people don’t worry about work/life balance. Their work is who they are, and there’s no separating the two. It’s what they breathe, live, and eat, so there’s no such thing as leaving it at the office. Asking them to do that is tantamount to asking them to deny who they are. And they’re OK with that because there’s nothing else they’d rather be doing.

Bringing It All Together

Now that you know what separates passionate people from everybody else, do you think you have enough passion in your life?

Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

The Women Who Are Running To Protest Trump Are Tapping Into History

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s electoral victory, Alison Désir, the founder of a community running organization in New York City called Harlem Run, turned her frustration into political action.

Désir’s remedy: a four-woman, 240-mile relay, beginning in Harlem, New York City, on Jan. 16 and ending in Washington, D.C., on the day of Trump’s inauguration. The race was designed to raise money and awareness for Planned Parenthood in honor of women. As of Jan. 20, the (Four Women) Run For ALL Women GoFundMe page had raised more than $ 89,000 ― more than twice their goal ― to give women access to cancer screenings and preventive care, even if Planned Parenthood is defunded this year.

Though Four Women are running specifically in opposition to Trump, they are participating in a legacy of people who run in protest or with advocacy in mind.

Protest and advocacy runs range from sponsored marathons to singular, public displays of support, such as Terry Fox’s famous 143-day marathon for cancer research or the recent 2,000-mile relay run from North Dakota to Washington, D.C. to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Désir’s activist relay is part of a larger tradition of running as a form of protest. Women in particular have a history of using long-distance running to call attention to their fight for equality. In fact, just the act of running while female used to be protest enough.

When Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb’s 1966 Boston Marathon entry was rejected by the Boston Athletic Association because women were neither allowed to participate, nor “physiologically able” to compete, she ignored her denial letter.

Instead, she dressed in her brother’s clothing, hid her hair under a hooded sweatshirt, and joined the race without a bib.

Gibb would go on to prove her detractors at the Boston Athletic Association wrong. She finished in the top third of the pack.

“Last week a tidy-looking and pretty 23-year-old blonde [had] a performance that should do much to phase out the old-fashioned notion that a female is too frail for distance running,” Sports Illustrated wrote at the time.

Her protest run also inspired other women to participate, most memorably at that time 20-year-old Kathy Switzer, who officially entered the Boston marathon under the non-gender specific name “K.V. Switzer” the following year. Remarkable though her physical achievement was, race director Jock Semple tried to tackle Switzer and toss her from the race for entering under false pretenses (as seen in the photo above snapped during the assault). As Switzer writes on her website:

A big man, a huge man, with bared teeth was set to pounce, and before I could react he grabbed my shoulder and flung me back, screaming, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers!” Then he swiped down my front, trying to rip off my bib number, just as I leapt backward from him.

The resulting photos transformed Switzer into the face of women’s running and cemented her status as a feminist role model for generations of women.

Six women in New York City built on that activist legacy. When the gun went off at the start of the New York City Marathon in 1972, the women sat down at the starting line and held up signs protesting the Amateur Athletic Union, which required female runners to participate in a “separate but equal” marathon and start the race 10 minutes before the male runners, or on a different starting line.

A photo of the sit-in ran in the New York Times the following Monday.

“It made a huge difference because it happened in New York. After that, the A.A.U. allowed women to run with men,” Nina Kuscsik, one of the protesters, told the Times in 2011. In 1972, Kuscsik became the first woman to officially win the Boston Marathon.

As for Désir, she and the women of (Four Women) Run For ALL Women are carrying what Désir calls the “baton of hope and health” into Washington Friday, then joining the Women’s March on Saturday, in honor of the rights of women everywhere.

In doing so, they’re building on the legacies of Gibb, Switzer and Kucsik.

“There will be four of us running, but we’ll be running for all of us,” Désir wrote on her GoFundMe page.

Featuring interviews with world-renowned chefs Heston Blumenthal (The Fat Duck), Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana), René Redzepi (Noma), Michel Roux Jr (Le Gavroche), April Bloomfield (The Spotted Pig), Daniel Boulud (Bar Boulud), Ruth Rogers (The River Café) and many more. In this book they reveal how they decide what food to serve and what inspires them to write their menus. In this much-anticipated book, Nicholas Lander, restaurant critic and author of The Art of the Restaurateur, rejoices in the history, design and evolution of the world’s favourite piece of paper: the menu. On the Menu presents over 100 stunning, full-colour reproductions of menus – some at the cutting edge of contemporary culinary innovation, and others that are relics from another time: the last menu from The French House Dining Room before Fergus Henderson departed for St John; and the final menu from Ferran Adrià’s three Michelin-starred elBulli in Spain. From the classic to the innovative: a Christmas menu served during the siege of Paris in 1870, which featured rats and zoo animals; the wittily illustrated menu at Quo Vadis in London, which gave the restaurant a new lease of life; and many, many more. Between the reproductions, Lander examines the principles of menu design and layout; the evolution of wine and cocktail lists; the menu as a record of the past; and he even takes us behind the scenes at Mario Batali’s Babbo, to sit in as the staff are briefed on the evening’s menu. These are truly pages to drool over.

Trump Vows Immediate Action Against ‘Anti-Police Atmosphere’ In U.S.

One of President Donald Trump’s first promises as leader of the free world is to “empower our law enforcement officers to do their jobs and keep our streets free of crime and violence,” according to a statement on the new White House website.

“The Trump Administration will be a law and order administration. President Trump will honor our men and women in uniform and will support their mission of protecting the public,” reads the issue brief published on Friday. “The dangerous anti-police atmosphere in America is wrong. The Trump Administration will end it.”

Although the document provides little in the way of specifics, it suggests Trump will prioritize some of the more controversial concerns raised by the law enforcement community in response to protests after the 2014 killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Many law enforcement officials, including those in the Fraternal Order of Police, the nation’s largest union of rank-and-file officers (which endorsed Trump earlier this year), have portrayed calls for police reform as dangerous and unnecessary, suggesting they have led to rising violence toward police officers and among civilians.

As the website launched, Trump delivered an inaugural address that included a reference to inner-city “crime and gangs and drugs” ― “American carnage,” as he put it. His platform takes a similar tone, noting recent increases in homicides in a number of the nation’s largest cities and suggesting the response should be “more law enforcement, more community engagement, and more effective policing.”

While Trump raises the specter of a rising crime wave, experts say the data is much less clear. The recent growth in violent crime comes after a decades-long downturn, during which the murder rate reached a low point in 2014. And crime remained close to historic lows in 2016, despite increases in certain cities over the past two years, according to an analysis by The Brennan Center for Justice.

The White House statement also appears to take a dim view of the ongoing movement for police reform, which has mounted nationwide protests demanding transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

“Our job is not to make life more comfortable for the rioter, the looter, or the violent disrupter,” the statement reads. “Our job is to make life more comfortable for parents who want their kids to be able to walk the streets safely. Or the senior citizen waiting for a bus. Or the young child walking home from school.”

Trump accused the Black Lives Matter movement of provoking violence against police officers last July, following the murder of five police officers in Dallas. He also implied that he would ask his appointed attorney general to investigate the group. The president is also in favor of reimplementing “stop and frisk,” a policy that violates people’s constitutional rights ― and disproportionately those of black and Latinx civilians ― by allowing unwarranted police searches.

Trump has also pushed the narrative that mounting scrutiny of police tactics has led to a literal “war on cops.” Violence against police has reached historic lows in recent years, however, and though preliminary data from 2016 suggests the trend ticked upward last year, policing is still far safer today than it was in the not-so-distant past.

Ten Simple and Unexpected Ways to Boost Happiness

What are some small ways to boost happiness in everyday life? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Raj Raghunathan, Professor of marketing and happiness expert at UT Austin, on Quora:

I once surveyed my students to make a list of three small things that make them feel happy after watching this video. Here’s the Top Ten list from that survey:

Note that not all of them will work equally well for you, so you need to figure out which ones work best:

1. Engage in vigorous physical activity.

The next time you need a mood-boost, try this out: go for a long run or play a game of basketball. Now, what counts as a long run for you may be a mere walk in the park for me (it’s more likely to be the reverse), but the point is that the activity needs to be vigorous enough get your heart pumping and your mind distracted from your negative ruminations. If you are like most people, you are unlikely to want to get off your butt if you are feeling down. But, as the Nike slogan says, “Just Do It!” Here’s a fact to get you going: you are guaranteed to feel better after a workout than you felt before it.

2. Hang out with friends.

When we feel down, we typically don’t want to interact with others. This is partly because we don’t want others to see our negative side, but it’s mostly because we don’t think that hanging out with others is really going to help us feel better. I’m not sure where this intuition comes from, but I can tell you that it is wrong: our mood reliably improves after we socialize, especially if the people with whom we socialize are happy and likeable. Similar to how it’s important to overcome the reluctance to exercise, it’s important to overcome the pessimism we feel about the effectiveness of socializing when feeling down.

If you are wondering where and with whom to socialize, just call one of the “favorites” on your smart phone and make a plan to meet. Tell them about what is troubling you to get you started–even a short chat with a close-friend can significantly improve your mood.

3. Consume a moderate amount of alcohol.

I know, I know, I shouldn’t be encouraging people to drink, but what to do? It turns out that when we desperately need a happiness quick-fix, consuming a moderate amount of alcohol can be effective. The key here is to consume just enough to feel a little relaxed. The very process by which alcohol lowers inhibitions can also lower the tendency to worry. In other words, alcohol can temporarily take your mind off things that are causing you to feel negative and thus, can be useful in situations in which our mind is on a “negativity overdrive.” Needless to say, it is important to consume only a moderate amount of alcohol. If you are one of those who can’t stop after two, don’t try this at home or elsewhere!

4. Dress to kill.

As I mentioned in an earlier article, human beings are highly social creatures, which means that we worry a lot about what others think of us. When we believe that others view us positively, we feel good, and when we believe that they view us negatively, we feel bad. So, one way to make yourself feel good is to wear your best clothes and perfume (or cologne, as the case may be) and venture out to your local park or mall. We you look and smell good, or think that you do, you are likely to believe that others view you positively and this will make you feel good.

5. Revisit old (and positive) memories.

Reliving the “good old times” can be a surprisingly effective mood-booster. I say “surprising” because many of us, especially the young among us, rarely engage in reliving fond memories. Curiously, it seems that the more our life has become virtual, the less we are likely to revisit the past. My parents, for example, regularly spend time recalling pleasant past memories, and also routinely pore over the “family album” to relive past memories. Our existence in the virtual world, e.g., on social media websites, should, if anything, allow us to revisit our past even more effectively, given that many of our cherished memories and experiences are merely a “click away”.

A note of caution, however, if you are looking to the Internet to revisit the past: stay away from those who make you feel inferior. That is, stay away from people who are into the game of “keeping up with the joneses”–you know, the ones who frequently post pictures from their vacation in Spain, or engage in name-dropping. Findings show that such “friends” bring you down.

6. Watch a funny or touching video.

Some people prefer funny videos and others prefer heart-warming ones. Regardless, findings show is that even a short exposure to a positive video can significantly boost happiness. (There’s a reason why one of the most popular ways to manipulate mood in experiments is to have participants watch a video.) Here are links to two funny and two touching videos. (Note: the last one is relatively long, at about 15 minutes, but it is well worth it!)

The Duck Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…

Heart-warming videos:

7. Talk to an older relative.

It’s a bit of a pity that, in many “new” cultures (like the US), the elderly aren’t as respected as they are older cultures (like China or India). Think about it: as you grow older, you get physically weak and mentally less nimble. The one saving grace could have been that you gain in respect. Without it, growing old seems to have no positives. No wonder the US is so “youth crazy”!

As findings on hyperopia show, the elderly do deserve our respect because they have “been there, done that.” They thus have many valuable lessons to share. In particular, no one can put things in perspective like the elderly can. Talking to them will help you discern the important from the merely urgent and will also help you not sweat the small stuff.

8. Tick something off your “to do” list.

Have you ever written down something on your things to do list just so that you can have the pleasure of scratching it out? Well, turns out you are not alone. Findings show that people derive an “efficacy boost” by accomplishing goals and this can, in turn, make them feel good. If you don’t have a things to do list or can’t think of something to write on it to scratch off, don’t worry. Just do something simple and easy, like depositing a check or washing a cup, and you’ll be on your way to feeling good.

9. Do a small act of kindness.

Perhaps the most powerful determinant of how we feel is the story we tell ourselves about who we are. The more we believe that we are efficacious and successful, the better we feel–which is why tip #8 (ticking something off your list) works. Another story you can tell yourself is that a large-hearted, generous person. One way to convince yourself of this story is to act like a large-hearted and generous person. This doesn’t mean that you break your bank to serve someone; all you need to do is to perform a small act of kindness such as, rescuing a kitten from a tree, or giving left-over food to a homeless person. Even merely smiling or saying “good morning!” to someone can pick your mood up.

10. Venture into nature.

Most urbanites don’t recognize it, but human beings are biophiles, that is, we love being out in nature. I take my MBA students on a two day retreat each year to a place out in the boonies. We hike up a hill and swim in the river and do various other “nature-oriented” things. Before going on the trip, most of my students are skeptical that being out in nature is going to do anything good, but many come away making a pledge that they will get out more in nature in the future. (I’m not sure if they actually make good on their pledge, but the pledge is good enough for me.) Turns out you don’t need to go on a two day retreat to reap the benefits of being out in nature: even a short hike or a picnic in a park can help you feel good.

Seeing E-Cigarettes May Increase Your Desire To Smoke

(Reuters Health) – - Newer versions of e-cigarettes known as vape pens may not look much like traditional cigarettes, but seeing someone use these devices still sparks a desire to smoke, a recent study suggests.

Like other types of e-cigarettes, vaporizers, or vape pens, are battery-powered gadgets with a heating element that turns liquid nicotine and flavorings into a cloud of vapor that users inhale. Vape pens are larger, produce bigger clouds of vapor and look less like traditional cigarettes than other e-cigarettes.

In a lab experiment, researchers randomly assigned 108 young adult smokers to interact with a person using either traditional cigarettes or vape pens. Both scenarios led to a similar spike in participants’ desire to smoke a cigarette, even if they had never tried a vape pen before.

These results were a surprise, and cast doubt on the potential for e-cigarettes to work as smoking cessation aid, said lead study author Andrea King, a psychiatry researcher at the University of Chicago.

“Smokers needs to be aware that – just like Pavlov’s dogs salivating to a bell associated with food – cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters, etc. may increase desire to smoke and alert the brain’s reward system,” King said by email.

“Our findings would suggest that smokers may want to reduce their exposures to the use of e-cigarettes as well as traditional cigarettes,” King added.

Big U.S. tobacco companies are all developing e-cigarettes. In the decade since the devices came on the U.S. market, public health experts have debated whether they might help with smoking cessation or at least be a safer alternative to smoking traditional combustible cigarettes, or whether they might lure a new generation into nicotine addiction.

The current study doesn’t explore the safety of the devices, but it does cast doubt on the potential for e-cigarettes to help blunt cravings for cigarettes.

In their experiment, King and colleagues testing smoking urges in 108 men and women aged 18 to 35 who currently smoked an average of about nine cigarettes a day.

More than 80 percent of the participants had also tried e-cigarettes at least once and almost 30 percent had used one in the past month.

When people volunteered for the study, researchers told them they would be invited to participate in an experiment assessing their mood after completing certain tasks or social interactions. Participants didn’t know the experiment was really assessing their urge to smoke.

In the lab, participants chatted with researchers posing as other volunteers. During these interactions, the pretending volunteer either smoked a traditional tobacco cigarette or used a vape pen. Both cues increased desire among research subjects for a cigarette or an e-cigarette.

The level and duration of desire to smoke among volunteers was the same whether they observed the researcher smoking a cigarette or using a vape pen. When the researcher drank bottled water, however, volunteers had no change in desire to smoke or vape.

At the end of the experiment, researchers tested the ability to resist smoking in a subset of 26 volunteers who were daily smokers. Researchers put a cigarette, lighter and ashtray in front of the volunteers and told them they could smoke or receive 20 cents for every five minutes they resisted.

Most volunteers held out for only 20 minutes, and this delay was the same whether their partner had been previously using a vape pen or a cigarette, the study found.

One limitation of the study is that its small size and lab setting make it difficult to know how seeing vape pens would influence smoking urges among smokers in real life situations, the authors note in Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

Still, the findings suggest being around vapers may make it harder for smokers to quit, said Dr. Brian Primack, a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh who wasn’t involved in the study.

“It may lead to more urges to smoke or more relapses,” Primack said by email.

I Never Knew Saying Goodbye Could Be So Hard

It was 2008 and I laid in my dorm room bed watching my television screen hoping, praying, wishing, that the next day would be a new day in America. I’d never dreamed that a Black man could be president of the United States, nor did I believe that it could happen in my lifetime. I grew up watching The Cosby Show, a show that was deemed to be a glimpse of Black excellence at it’s finest and a counter narrative, yet the characters were only imaginative creations that were symbolic of the countless faces of color lacking television show portrayals in the mainstream. I thought about that show that night and began to also think about Civil Rights leaders such as Martin, Malcolm, and Thurgood. Great men who ostensibly existed in life to push us forward as a people, as a nation, and in that moment of thought something happened, Wolf Blitzer started to speak, but for the first time I couldn’t understand what he was saying. I never imagined something that was surely impossible, be in all actuality possible.

“Barack Obama, 47 years old, will be the President- elect of the United States,” Mr. Blitzer stated.

This moment for me, for so many, defined our lives, our history, and our existence.

As we were beginning to wind down to the final days of the Obama presidency I found myself trying to avoid the fair-well articles, magazines, and videos. Watching the Obamas leave the White House, for me, is like watching a close family member deteriorate and then die. You simply never ever want to say goodbye, yet outside of your control their light simply becomes more and more dim by the day. It’s been a devastating experience to live.

These are the moments in time that have inundated my thoughts each day as we reach the final day of an iconic era in our history:

The Swearing in of the first Black President

The First Dance

Jacob Philadelphia’s Visit To The White House

Signing Of Obamacare

The Death Of Osama Bin Laden

Sandy Hook

Legalization Of Gay Marriage

Seeing Malia And Sasha Grow Up

Every Michelle Moment

These flashes in time do not even begin to encapsulate the enormous impression they have had on so many lives for the better. There are many who are living day-by-day at a lost for words to express how much the Obama’s meant to them, to many in this country, and to the world. What more could they have done? What more could they have given that wasn’t already miles ahead of past predecessors. For Millenials, they no longer need to feel their voice doesn’t matter, as for it was because of them change became a reality. For Girls, they were reminded constantly they could be anything because Michelle made it her mission to “let girls learn”.

I am left now as a Black man in America carrying forth in my spirit the audacity of hope President Obama made it his mission to bestow and on January 20th I can honestly say I will not be left in dismay of the future. The most wonderful gift the Obama’s have left for all of us is the memories and as hard as it is to say goodbye, for many, but especially for Black people I conclude with this ― the greatest satisfaction for every Black American is that on January 21st there will no longer be a need to ever again reference a show like the Cosby show to combat negative stereotypes or reference Black excellence because unlike the Cosby’s, the Obama’s were real. It is no longer ‘yes we can’ as it is now ‘yes they did’ and ‘yes we did’. The world stage was their platform and the mere fact that they were there in their most authentic selves… matters.

Still Stressed Out About The Election? You’re Not Alone.

Although the presidential election ended 71 days ago, more than 1 in 3 Americans continue to experience inner turmoil over the outcome.

According to a new Washington Post-ABC News Poll, 35 percent of those polled say Trump’s election has increased their normal stress level. Only 12 percent say it has reduced their stress. The majority, 52 percent, say it’s made no difference.

The groups most likely to say their stress has increased after the election include Democrats, Hillary Clinton supporters, Hispanics and people without a religious affiliation. Of those who voted for Clinton, 39 percent say their stress has increased a “great deal” and 25 percent say it has increased “somewhat.”

More than half of Hispanic respondents ― 54 percent ― say that Trump’s election has boosted their stress levels. Thirty-eight percent of African-American voters agree, versus only 29 percent of white voters.

Women are also more likely to report anxiety over Trump’s election, with 41 percent saying it has increased their stress levels, 20 percent by a great deal. Men tend to be more indifferent, with 58 percent saying the election has made no difference in how stressed they are.

Trump supporters and Republicans are significantly less stressed about his future presidency. Sixty-five percent of Trump voters and the same percentage of Republicans say the election result has made no difference in their stress levels, while 31 percent of Trump voters and 25 percent of Republicans say it has actually decreased their worries.

A few other groups also say the election didn’t affect their stress levels. Sixty-three percent of people who didn’t vote or who voted for a third-party candidate say the election has made no difference in how stressed they are.

The Washington Post-ABC News Poll was conducted by telephone Jan. 12-15, 2017, among a random national sample of 1,005 adults, including landline and cellphone respondents. Overall results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Now is the Time: Do the Next, Right Thing

We will make only one choice.

Throughout our lives, we do only one thing. Again and again, moment by moment, year after year. It is how we live our days, how we shape our lives.

Our choice is this: What is the next, right thing for us to do? Where, in this moment, will we place our time, our care, our attention? Do we remain as we are, do we move? do we speak or keep silent, attend to this person, or that task, or turn away, in this direction, or that?

Each new moment demands a fresh choice.

after every decision, there is yet another to be made. And another. Ours are not so often obviously dramatic choices. We are rarely called upon to know the time to change careers, the day to get married, the hour to leave the city of our birth. Most choices are small, quiet, intimate things that flow from us as a breath, as water exhaled from a mountain spring. Endless, simple, one by one thimbles of water tumble into the next, creating the smallest trickles playing this way and that. Still. Over time, with neither map nor plan – through surprising twists, curving around unforeseen obstacles-mere droplets of water will always invariably find their way down, down, through the valley, completing their pilgrimage at last to become one, an ancient and familiar melting, into the sea, from which it came.

At every point of resistance, any threat of change, our tiny stream makes a choice: To go right or left? Over or around? Or it may just stop, right where it is. Without moving, our stream becomes a shallow pool, creates a slowly growing fullness, waiting. Waiting for that singularly perfect moment when the only possible next thing is to spill itself out and over, stumbling and rushing everywhere along its way.

The stream knows nothing of what lies ahead. It is not conscious of planning for any possible future. It is simply following the path of least resistance, motivated by gravity. Still, how does the water “decide” to go right, or left, when approaching a boulder, a fallen tree? And yet, a choice is made. Inch by inch, the water does the next, right thing, perhaps encountering tiny rivulets or flowing creeks along the way. By the end of the journey, if we look back, we witness the gradual, evolving birth of what we now realize has, drop by drop, choice by choice, become a stream.

A stream is little more than an ongoing fidelity, a consecrated relationship. A never-ending conversation between water, gravity, earth, overcoming obstacles, in a relationship born over time, which gives birth to this astonishing miracle we then call, “stream.” This ancient, elemental rhythm between water and earth creates all the streams that saturate all the seas that cover all the world.

So it is with our lives. The only choice we ever make is one called out from us by a similarly vital inner gravity, an invisible thread that carries our life forward, until our life – this one wild and precious life, meets the world. In all its wonder and promise, in all its ferocity and confusion. Just as it is.

So. We must prepare. We will make choices. If fortune smiles upon us we will make good, honorable, strong choices. But every decision we make, no matter how small, shapes the ground of our being. Each choice helps form the foundation upon which we stand, and live, and act.

This is our field of battle: Here, who we are meets what is in the world. This essential, heroic relationship, this intimate communion between the quiet wisdom of our hearts, and the ways the world emerges, moment by moment, right before our eyes becomes our most reliable tool, our most potent weapon, our true north, a lifelong practice of deep and holy listening for that very next, right thing we will – make no mistake – absolutely, and sooner than we imagine, be required to choose.

Our lives hang in the balance. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow us all.

How Technologies are Helping to Improve Mental Health Care

McLean Hospital Guest Blogger
Justin T. Baker, MD, PhD

2017-01-18-1484761811-2100551-BakerHeadshot198Mar3016.jpgIn today’s world, everyone carries a smartphone. Why not capitalize on this and develop apps that will help improve health care–specifically mental health care? This is a question that many start-up companies and McLean Hospital are asking.

Ideally, technology should create a sensible balance in supporting and enhancing clinical care for patients while providing real-time behavioral and physiological data for doctors and researchers. This much-needed data will help lead us to breakthroughs in better understanding the biology of mental illness.

At McLean, we’ve been working with innovative startup companies that have developed smartphone applications and other devices to help individuals better manage their illnesses, and we’ve offered these tools to some of our outpatient populations. Though there has been some mixed feedback, most patients are enthusiastic about the use of these apps, as individuals often want to actively participate in their own care. Our young patients who are technically savvy see it as a natural connection to have an app that allows them to better track their progress and connect with their treatment providers.

This trend towards technology in treatment holds great promise for the younger population. Approximately 20 percent of teenagers ages 13 to 18 in the United States experience severe mental disorders each year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for those ages 15 to 24. Technological tools have the potential to become a lifesaving bridge between teens and young adults and the mental health field.

As technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, we’re starting to see devices and software become more nuanced. Though there are some critical issues to resolve–privacy, security, legal liability, reimbursement, and the ethics of gathering data and delivery services through devices rather than humans–if we find solutions to these issues and make sure that technologies are tailored to real-world patients, such advancements can have a transformational impact in not only improving care but expanding access to care.

McLean is currently using technology to help improve care among different populations. Other forms of technology we hope to adopt in the next few years include apps that help us reduce repeat patient admissions by tracking patients’ progress after hospitalization and intervening when needed to help reduce relapse and promote recovery.

There is extremely exciting and promising work going on in the field and by continuing to integrate technology into healthcare, we are improving lives.

Please check out our article in the January 2016 issue of JAMA Psychiatry on “Why Psychiatry Needs Data Science and Why Data Science Needs Psychiatry:Connecting With Technology.”

Additional information on this topic can also be found in a paper co-authored by McLean Hospital President in Chief Scott L. Rauch, MD, in the June 2016 issue of Neuropsychopharmacology, titled “Harnessing Smartphone-Based Digital Phenotyping to Enhance Behavioral and Mental Health.”

Watch The Obamas’ Cute Playdate With The Kids Who Received Their Swing Set

After donating their daughters’ swing set, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama got to see just how much happiness the gift brought its new owners.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Obamas visited the Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter, the shelter that received the swing set, in Washington, D.C. The president pushed kids on the swings, while the first lady showed them how to use the rope swing.

Watch the kids reacting to seeing the Obamas below.

The Obamas offered the swing set, called “Malia and Sasha’s Castle” and put up on the South Lawn of the White House in March 2009, to the Trump family, who declined. It will now be a fun spot for families at the Jobs Have Priority Shelter, which aims to “move homeless individuals from dependency to self-sufficiency by removing the barriers that prevent them from being successful.”

On its Facebook page, the team at the shelter wrote that it was “honored” the Obamas chose it as the owner of their beloved play set. The post also included the hashtag #ForeverThankful.

What happens when you lose the flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter anymore?

What happens when you feel stuck?

You haven’t spoken up in over 2 months and we all know that is forever in the online world. You’ve not posted on all your social media platforms, You haven’t recorded a video, You’ve not showed up in your own FB group! What happens to your self-esteem and your confidence when these actions take place. Well, I should really ask what happens to your self-esteem and confidence when nothing has taken place or when you are sucked into this idea that you have to be online 24-7 in order to make a dollar? Well, it can be pretty depressing to know or should I rather say “think” that you have to start all over.

“Truth is being on social media all the time does not equate to running a business or conducting business activity”

You didn’t always feel this way…You actually had some rhyme or reason to what you were doing months before but somehow you’ve experienced something called burnout. That’s what it is. I hate this term burnout. It feels so cliche, it feels like I crashed and burned and there’s no return. There’s no getting back up. But really with all these emotions and thoughts there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lesson to be learned and taught to others.

So…let me revisit those questions and share with you my answer.

What can happen when you’ve slowed down on social media?

For starters you get to reflect where you were/are heading with your business… So in my book, amazing things can happen! You begin to have a new sense of confidence and clarity. You can find a new sense of commitment to your goals and what you stand for in your business. You can begin to find your own voice again. You know what when you are constantly online being bombarded by everyone else’s messages you can begin to sound like or imitate someone you really admire. But guess what? You aren’t that person so this time away can bring about a uniqueness in you, and difference in you where you begin to stand out more in your own niche in this sea of online businesses.

What can happen when you lose your flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

Realistically you haven’t lost your flow…you had it scheduled once before. If you scheduled it before I’m sure you can refer back to your old schedule but this time with a breath of fresh ideas and opinions. You can find it on a piece of paper a word document, one of your planners. Start looking back and re-evaluating what you were doing before the burnout. You may just be in a bit of a funk…YOU personally and internally may not be in a flow but that’s ok. Begin to reconnect with your creator first, with the God who created you and listen in to your spirit and where He would have you begin. He’s given you a message for others and you know you gotta get it out to the masses. Start small. Start with an inspirational photo, feel free to reintroduce yourself. Do whatever feels right to you but whatever you do never give up because you lost your flow or feel like you don’t know where to start. I can help with that…I hope this blog post is helping with that now.

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter?

Well honey, this is more of an internal thing. If you are feeling like your voice won’t matter then guess what…it won’t. It’s not for you to determine how your story will connect with others. It’s not for you to give a consensus on the wonderful message imparted within you. Nope you don’t get to judge your message before sharing with others.

When I stepped outside of my own comfort zone and began to share my story and share what I stood for, guess what. I got an astounding…”That was powerful”. This was a mindset shift that I was sharing with other women in my group.

Did you know that I re-edited and re-edited and stressed over this message for days before I put it out. Your voice is your message and when you share it just know if you’ve touched one person you’ve done your job!!!

Conclusion

Whether you are recovering from “Burn Out” or currently experiencing it as you read this post, it’s important to remember that business is a journey and there is no race to the finish line. Brands continually evolve and grow just like we do as people. Sometimes that growth may feel stunted and other times you may experience a growth spurt. But most importantly, building a business is a journey through personal development.

Learning more about yourself and allowing your commitment to shine through regardless of where you think you should be in business are important steps to showing up and serving others through your business.

A New Urine Test Could Measure How Healthy Your Diet Is

How healthy is your diet? The most specific answer you could probably muster might be something like “pretty healthy” or “not really that healthy.”

But now, a new urine test provides a more specific and reliable answer to that question, according to a small new study.

The test detects and measures the levels of certain biological markers that are created when foods such as meat, fruit and vegetables are broken down by the body after a person eats them, the researchers found. [7 Foods You Can Overdose On]

These markers can more objectively indicate whether a person eats a healthy diet — for example, one that is rich in fruits and vegetables, said lead study author Isabel Garcia-Perez, a research associate in the Imperial College London Department of Medicine. The test can be run in 5 minutes, according to the study.

In the study, the researchers asked 19 people to follow four different diets that ranged from very healthy (high in fruits and vegetables) to quite unhealthy (with lots of high-fat foods and low in fruits and vegetables). Each person in the study followed each of these four diets: They stayed at a lab, on four separate occasions, for three days at a time, and during each stay, the researchers collected the people’s urine samples in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Then, the researchers analyzed the urine samples for the various chemical compounds that are produced when the body breaks down food. Some of these compounds indicate that a person has recently eaten a certain type of food, such as red meat, chicken, fish, or fruits or vegetables. Other compounds provide an even more detailed look at a person’s diet by indicating that he or she has recently consumed specific foods, such as grapes, citrus fruits or leafy green vegetables, according to the study, published today (Jan. 12) in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

Based on the results of their tests, the researchers created a model profile of urine compounds that indicates that a person is eating a healthy diet that’s rich in fruits and vegetables. [Pee a Rainbow: Scientist Snaps Shot of Colorful Urine]

This model urine profile can be compared with any person’s urine profile, to provide an instant indicator of how healthy the person’s diet is, the researchers said.

In their study, the researchers also tested the accuracy of the new test by looking at urine samples and dietary information from 225 people in the U.K. and 66 people in Denmark from a previous study. The researchers were able to accurately predict these people’s diets based on just their urine samples, according to the findings.

The new test could be used in research that looks at people’s dietary habits, the researchers said. Typically, the information on people’s diets that is used in studies is self-reported. In contrast, the new test provides information that is more objective and accurate, the researchers said.

However, the work on the test is still in its initial stages, and it is not commercially available yet, Garcia-Perez said. The researchers are working on developing the test further, she told Live Science. Once the test is developed further, it could also be used one day in weight-loss programs to monitor whether people are following their diets, Garcia-Perez said.

A story about family, set in the 1990s, and told through the sardonic voice of Valerie Kjos. She’s a Midwestern Gen X’er whose life is just barely coming together with her live-in boyfriend when his Iranian mother, Goli, comes for a visit that seems to never end. But as she’s about to learn, Goli has secrets of her own.”Warm, wise, and laugh-out-loud funny, Roseheart creates a world and invites us in. Donald Trump and the “F” Word

Last week, a group calling itself Resist Fascism took out a full-page advertisement in the The New York Times, urging national resistance to the incoming Trump-Pence “regime.” Signed by thousands of people, the statement did not mince words in portraying Donald Trump as a threat to democracy. “By any definition,” it read, “Trump is a fascist.”

But is Trump a fascist? When are we justified in using the “f” word to describe a right-wing politician or movement that we legitimately find frightening?

One of the difficulties we face in answering such questions lies in recognizing fascism when we see it. History does not, in fact, repeat itself. The “first wave” fascist movements, which emerged in Italy, Germany, and Spain during the poisonous interregnum between the First and Second World Wars, were organic to their time and place, the outcome of complex cultural, economic, and social conditions that will never come together in the same way again. Fears of liberals notwithstanding, we are no more likely to see “another Hitler” as we are to see “another” FDR, Lenin, or Richard III.

However, things appear differently if we view fascism as a political type, rather than as a specific, unchanging form. Once we stop looking for “another” Hitler, and focus instead on the core ideological features of fascist movements, it becomes all too plausible to depict Trumpism as an at least incipient or “proto”-fascist movement.

Of the dozen or so common elements identified by scholars as characteristic of earlier fascist movements, almost all in fact can be seen today in Trumpism: extreme nationalism, militarism, economic populism, corporatism (the merging of state interests with monopoly capitalism), misogyny and reactionary gender politics, contempt for truth (and an affinity for lies), hatred of intellectuals and the so-called “cultural elite,” nativism, scape-goating of religious and racial minorities, demonization of domestic “enemies,” and contempt for liberal democratic norms and values.

Only two key ingredients that typified first wave fascism are so far missing from Trumpism–state terror and paramilitary violence. While the absence of these elements is significant–both civil violence and state terror were the true hallmarks of earlier fascist movements, distinguishing them from other forms of right-wing nationalism–that doesn’t mean they couldn’t still be in the offing.

Hitler and Mussolini built their power bases by recruiting disaffected soldiers and officers returned from the front lines of the First World War, using them as shock troops in their war against their political opponents on the Left. These were brutal men, killers who had lost faith in the liberal political order and who were happy to crack open a few skulls to combat Communism. In Italy, roving bands of squadristi, or Blackshirts, beat or shot leftists in the streets; in Germany, the Brownshirts similarly terrorized leftists, Jews, and others (before themselves being murdered by Hitler, replaced by the more reliable SS). Paramilitary violence played a key role not only in solidifying the power of the fascists in Italy, the Nazis in Germany, and the Falangists in Spain, but in preparing the ground for the emergence of the totalitarian state.

Fascists saw violence not as a last resort, but as a necessary and even desirable political tool. Political opponents and dissidents were not merely jailed, they were tortured or murdered. With the consolidation of fascist power, rule of law effectively disappeared. So did individual rights. War was celebrated as an opportunity for national greatness and masculine virtue. Within Germany’s sphere of control after 1939, finally, mass murder became state policy–and 11 million people perished in concentration camps.

Could similar violence one day engulf our own republic? Is some form of paramilitarism or state terror possible here?

Trump’s attitude towards violence is hardly reassuring. During his campaign rallies, Trump egged on his supporters to attack protesters, and he has repeatedly advocated torture as an instrument of the state. Trump also says he admires Vladimir Putin, the Russian dictator, and Rodrigo Duterte, the fascist leader of the Philippines, whose government is murdering thousands of drug addicts–in part using paramilitary forces.

However, Trump hasn’t threatened to murder his opponents. And a handful of punches, thrown over the course of a bitterly contested election, are not remotely comparable to organized squadristi sowing terror in the streets. That should perhaps comfort us. Contra the claims of the Resist Fascism movement, we will not all be living under fascist rule on January 20–and I know this because I won’t have to fear being thrown in jail and tortured for writing essays like this one on January 21.

The trouble is, we have no way of knowing just how far Trump and his cabinet–a motley crew of racists, militarists, and ruthless billionaires, some with ties to the fascistic “Alt-Right” white nationalist movement–would take things in a national crisis. Martial law hardly seems outside the realm of possibility, given the right confluence of events.

Nor can paramilitary violence in the US be entirely discounted. Among Trump’s most enthusiastic supporters are members of the US militia movement, a decentralized, expanding network of armed, right-wing paramilitary groups. Between 2014 and 2015 alone, the number of such extremist groups grew by 37%. Among the newest recruits to the movement are disaffected veterans returned from America’s failed wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, men who have been casting about for ways to feel socially relevant in a civilian culture whose norms and values they feel estranged from. Veterans voted for Trump by an astonishing 2 to 1 margin over Hillary Clinton in the election, and they represent a potentially vast pool for future militia recruitment. Whether the militias some day become “weaponized,” serving as paramilitary muscle for the extreme right, will depend in part on how bad things get, economically, ecologically, and politically.

Ultimately, though, it takes a village to raise a führer. Wherever fascism has appeared, it has always taken the form of a populist movement with relatively broad public support. And it is here we find the least cause for optimism, and the most grounds for concern–namely, in the fact that tens of millions of Americans continue to respond enthusiastically to Trump.

There is no question that authoritarian, anti-democratic, misogynist, racist, and pro-violence attitudes are spreading like viruses in the American populace. Fully half of Americans polled support Trump’s call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the US, and nearly half now say they support the torture of prisoners of war. Even public support for the principle of civilian democratic rule has dropped precipitously. In 2015, a YouGov poll found that nearly a third of Americans (and 43% of Republicans) said they could imagine supporting a future military coup against their government. One well-publicized poll last year found that only 19% of American millennials agreed that military rule in the US would be “illegitimate.”

A similar waning of democratic and liberal values has been remarked in Europe, where decades of public frustration over immigration and perceived loss of local and national autonomy have boiled over into general populist revolt. As in the 1920s and 1930s period, we are in fact seeing the rise not of one fascism, but of many. All of these movements, meanwhile, can be traced, directly or indirectly, to the growing irrationalities, inequalities, and depredations of the world capitalist system. And because there is no sign that these underlying problems can be addressed within the existing frameworks, the immediate future lies squarely with populists of the Left and Right.

Trumpism is merely a symptom of this wider collapse of the liberal order. Though it is not yet fascism, it is only one or two steps removed. So it is urgent that we act now, and not sit on the sidelines. Because if things get truly bad, it will then be too late for us to do anything about it.

Here’s to the Swimmers & the Spectators: A Lesson in Vulnerability.

I had just finished a set when she walked by, carrying the same hot pink swim bag I have, except she was three decades younger. I could tell by her stride, she was precocious, tenacious, an independent thinker and a fish in the water, just like I am.

She waved at me with her kickboard. I waved back with my paddle.

The girl and I were the only ones in the pool. The sun hadn’t risen above the building yet. It was too early, too cold and too quiet for criticism.

I heard him before I saw him, every three strokes as I turned my head into the pocket: “Streamline! Streamline! Nine strokes from the middle! One! Twoooo! Threeee!” He was creating anxious waves in the placid Sunday morning air. I didn’t care for his disruptive ways, but I wasn’t going to let him ruin my ritual.

I finished another set and put my paddles down. It was impossible not to notice him: sitting in a chair directly in front of her lane, paper coffee cup in one hand, iPhone in the other, his baseball hat tilted to one side (not on purpose), his glasses slightly slanted to the other side. Everything about him appeared askew, including his left ankle crossed over his right thigh, knee bouncing: a product of too much caffeine and repressed shame and anger channeled through vicarious parenting.

“I want to put on my fins for the next set, Dad.” She took a chug from her ladybug sippy cup.
“Fins are way too easy.”
“No they’re not!”
She exclaimed with confidence.
“Fine. Put on your fins then.” He continued to bark at her until I finished my last set.

I got out and dried myself off. The girl took a rest after removing her fins, panting and clinging to the wall like a barnacle trying to break free. We made eye contact.

“You’re doing awesome!” I waved again.
“Thanks. This is my dad. He’s my coach. I hate it!” She deflected the truth with humor.
“I don’t blame you.” I did the same, except we both knew we weren’t joking, he didn’t though, he laughed: “You should see me during tennis lessons!”
“I can only imagine,” I said snidely.
“You sure swim the distance. You do master swim?”
“No. I swim for sanity. Do you do master swim?”
“Ha. No, I don’t swim. I’m not in shape, I can hardly make a lap.”

I wanted to walk over and push his chair in the pool, with him in it.
“Maybe it would be helpful since you’re coaching her.”
He shrugged his fleece adorned shoulders: “I guess, but I’d have to get in shape first.”
“Or, you could just start swimming, that’ll get you in shape.”
“Eh, you’re probably right…”

When I first started writing publicly, I was deeply affected by the criticism of others about my work. Trolls, strangers, acquaintances, friends and some peripheral family members had many things to say, some good and some downright unsupportive and nasty. To counter the naysayers, my therapist offered me the words of Brené Brown, which I’ve never forgotten:

A lot of cheap seats in the arena are filled with people who never venture onto the floor. They just hurl mean-spirited criticisms and put-downs from a safe distance. The problem is, when we stop caring what people think and stop feeling hut by cruelty, we lose our ability to connect. But when we’re defined by what people think, we lose the courage to be vulnerable. Therefore, we need to be selective about the feedback we let into our lives. For me, if you’re not in the arena getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback. ~Brené Brown, Rising Strong

People who criticize others for doing what they love are terrified of vulnerability, because, they themselves are paralyzed by the thoughts of others. They can’t conceive of what it’s like to love something so much that you’ll get up on a cold Sunday morning to jump into the water, or wake at 5AM to pour your heart out, no matter what anyone has to say about it.

It’s easy to sit far enough away from the water where you can’t get splashed. The spectator perspective dons the illusion, that you can see it all: what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s good and what’s bad, how to do it better and faster. But, the truth is, you don’t know what it’s like or what it takes until you’ve typed all of the keys and done all of the laps. You just don’t know.

I am selective these days, about what I let in and what I don’t. I hear it all, I even feel it, but I only choose to trust the people who are in it, too. They tend to have the least amount of criticism, because, they’re too busy doing what they love; all they can usually muster is a wave and a thumbs up.

I wholeheartedly agree with Brené Brown. I’m in it with her, putting myself out there, in there. I’m in that arena, too, getting my ass kicked. There are many of us in here.

So, I write this for the little girl in lane 8 and all of my teammates, and to you, the spectators. We welcome you to join us in here, but if you’re not interested in getting your ass kicked, too, then we’re not interested in your feedback.

I packed up my swim gear and swung my hot pink bag over my shoulder. I walked in front of his chair and leaned into the lane:“You’re a great swimmer.” She believed me, I could tell. It takes one to know one.

The Two Tribes

As we approach Inauguration day, I want to offer a deeper, broader context for the divisions we are facing as a nation.

The Two Tribes

In the beginning, when the first humans came across each other, it went two ways. Upon seeing someone different, the more fearful one said, “You’re different. Go away.” The other, upon seeing someone not like him, said, “You’re different. Come, teach me what I don’t know.” While our reasoning has grown more complicated throughout the centuries, it’s essentially the same. “Go away” or “Come, teach me.”

Since the beginning, the two tribes have had their philosophies. The “Go away” tribe has always believed that human beings, by their nature, are self-serving and untrustworthy, in need of control. The “Go away” tribe believes in stringent laws and constraints, both moral and legal, to ensure that people don’t run amuck. The “Come, teach me” tribe believes that human beings, by their nature, are kind and trustworthy. The “Come, teach me” tribe believes in empowering laws that cultivate freedom, to ensure that people actualize their web of gifts through relationship.

The truth is that we are born into both tribes and can move from one to the other, depending on the level of our fear. The times of genocide throughout history mark the extreme, malignant manifestation of the “Go away” tribe. Distorted by fear, it’s not enough just to say, “Go away.” For unbridled fear turns to anger, which normalized turns into prejudice and hate. Such deep, embedded fear dictates that we need to make sure that those who are different can’t return. And so, we exile them, jail them, hurt them, and in extremely ugly cases, persecute and kill them.

However, the times of enlightenment throughout history mark the extreme manifestation of the “Come, teach me” tribe, which through learning and wonder leads to eras of compassion and cooperation. Empowered by trust, curiosity turns into interdependence and a belief that we are more together than alone. When allowed to blossom, we realize that we need each other and our diversity of gifts to make life whole. This ethic is what gave rise to democracy in the first place. This is why America has grown so strong from welcoming immigrants for over two hundred years.

That we as a nation have moved through periods of isolationism and inclusion only shows how we as a people keep shifting between the two tribes. Our nation today has coagulated into these primary camps. For the moment, we seem to be heading into another period of isolationism and fear of those who are different.

I admit that I am of the “Come, teach me” tribe, at least until my fear overrides my better judgment. Though I always pray for our return to each other. And so, I believe it’s imperative that we educate our children to live according to the fundamental dynamic that all the spiritual traditions teach: that we are all parts of one indivisible whole, which love and suffering reveal. And while we come apart from time to time, like now, while we push each other away in our fear, the natural resting position of life on Earth is to join. So that we can release the life-force inherent in the biological, societal, and mystical fact that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Love, trust, courage, and the ability to listen are the agencies of heart that allow us to rejoin. These are the qualities that each soul has waiting within it like golden seeds to be watered by the strength of our kindness. This is the purpose of community: to water these seeds and to join and rejoin.
