Michael Bloomberg To Endorse Hillary Clinton: Report

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will endorse presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a speech at the Democratic National Convention next week, The New York Times reports.

According to the Times, the endorsement “reflects Mr. Bloomberg’s increasing dismay about the rise of Donald J. Trump and a determination to see that the Republican nominee is defeated.”

The New York billionaire decided against an independent bid for president himself earlier this year due to fears he would “play a role in electing a candidate who would weaken our unity and darken our future.”

Bloomberg further stated that Trump “has run the most divisive and demagogic presidential campaign I can remember, preying on people’s prejudices and fears.”

Bloomberg was elected to New York’s mayoralty as a Republican in 2001 but then became an independent.

The Democratic National Convention takes place July 25-29 in Philadelphia.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Can STDs Be Transmitted Through Swimming Pools? An Expert Weighs In

The Question: Is it possible to catch STDs from swimming in a pool or hot tub?

No, not unless you’re having sex in the pool with someone who has an STD.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an individual can only pass on an STD through direct person-to-person contact. Take syphilis, for example. The disease cannot be transmitted through casual contact with doorknobs, seats, eating utensils, or pools.

Dr. Edward Brooks, an infectious disease specialist  at Stanford Health Care, explains that there is no evidence that an individual can get an STD from casually swimming in a pool. Transmission of STDs through a hot tub or pool are only possible if two people are engaging in sexual activity while in the water. An intimate exchange of bodily fluids is necessary in order for those types of diseases to be passed along to someone else.

Although you may have dodged that STD bullet, it’s important to remember that there are other diseases one can get from being in a pool.

“The most common are diarrheal illnesses, transmitted by ingesting the organism accidentally while swimming in the pool,” Brooks said.

These types of illnesses are mainly caused by fecal contamination, which is when someone who has diarrhea goes swimming and contaminates the water with an infectious microorganism. Once the microorganism is in the water, people who ingest enough of it while swimming could become sick.

In order to protect yourself from such diseases, Brooks explains that it’s important to make sure all pools or hot tubs you choose to swim in are well-maintained. If you are using public facilities, it would be smart to verify that the facility is meeting chlorine and PH balance standards. If you have a pool of your own, learn how to correctly maintain it or hire an outside service to ensure it is being done adequately.

All public freshwater pools should be cleaned and disinfected with chlorine products, the substance used to kill bacteria, most viruses and algae. Without the use of these chemicals, we would almost always be swimming in a giant puddle of germs. Let’s just take a moment to let that sink in ― yuck!

The CDC has set of science-based guidelines that local and state public health authorities can use to create their own regulations to monitor the safety of public pools.

Brooks also said that it is very important to practice good hygiene. Take a shower before and after you go swimming to prevent the transfer of diarrheal illnesses. Also be sure to clean your bathing suit with soap and water after use.

To sum it all up, the only STDs you can get while swimming are those passed through intimate sexual contact with someone who has an infection. Practicing good hygiene, like showering before and after swimming and properly cleaning your swimsuit, can help keep you safe from the most common waterborne illnesses that could be lurking beneath the surface.

Zingerman’s Guide to Good Eating: How to Choose the Best Bread, Cheeses, Olive Oil, Pasta, Chocolate, and Much More

Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Zingerman’s is a food emporium specializing in top-quality products. One of the store’s founding partners, Ari Weinzweig, is also the author of Zingerman’s Guide to Good Eating, a key to the pleasures of the best breads, cheeses, olive oil, chocolate, and more, complete with 130 recipes. Like his store (whose name is a fanciful evocation of old-world delis), Weinzweig is committed to the best. Why? “Ultimately, I could care less whether food is fancy,” he writes. “I just want it to taste good.” The better food tastes,” he says, “the more zing [in your] daily routine.” A too modest claim for the pleasures of getting to know your food Beginning with an exploration of the why and how of better ingredients (if you think you can’t recognize them, Weinzweig offers “eating experiments,” such as trying supermarket Swiss cheese versus a well-aged Gruyre), and other help (like “Saffron Superstitions Skewered”). He then presents food profiles–such as those for oils, olives, and vinegars, and grains and rices–with notes on production and exemplary types, brand information and other what-to-look for info, plus suggestions for use. For example, readers learn about Italian rices such as arborio and carnaroli; discover how to recognize their impostors (look for the seal of the rice growers consortium); take a visit to a venerable rice grower; then receive thorough advice on risotto making. Hillary Clinton Introduces Tim Kaine As ‘Everything Donald Trump And Mike Pence Are Not’

Hillary Clinton made her first appearance with vice presidential pick, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), hailing him for being extremely qualified for the job and offering a stark contrast to Donald Trump and his VP choice.

A beaming Kaine took the stage with Clinton in Miami and sat behind the presumptive Democratic nominee after she introduced him on stage at the convention.

While Trump has called Mexicans “rapists” plans to build a wall and deporting millions of undocumented immigrants, Kaine spoke in Spanish in the opening moments of his remarks. “Bienvenidos a todos en nuestro pais, porque somos Americanos todos,” he said. (“Welcome to our country, because we are all Americans.”) He continued to pivot back and forth between Spanish and English throughout his comments and at one point thanked naturalized citizens in the United States for choosing to become United States citizens.

“Senator Tim Kaine is everything Donald Trump and Mike Pence are not,” Clinton said. “There’s no doubt in my mind, because I’m here with him, that Tim is qualified to be vice president.”

Echoing the language she used to describe herself during the presidential campaign, Clinton painted Kaine as pragmatic progressive.

“He’s a progressive who likes to get things done. That’s my kind of guy, Tim.”

Clinton noted that one of Kaine’s first cases as a lawyer was doing pro-bono work representing an African-American woman who had been denied an apartment because of her race. While Kaine was taking on housing discrimination, Clinton noted, Trump was denying apartments to African Americans.

Noting that the NRA was headquartered in his state, Clinton said Kaine wouldn’t hesitate to push for gun control.

“Make no mistake, behind that smile, Tim also has a backbone of steel. Just ask the NRA,” she said. His voice rising, Kaine repeatedly said “we will not rest” until the U.S. has gun control.

Clinton also criticized the negative picture of America that Trump painted in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention and his claim that he alone could fix the country.

“When someone says I alone can fix it, that should set off alarm bells in Democrats minds, but Republicans, independents, people of all ages and backgrounds,” she said. “That is not a Democracy,” she said.

The rally stood in stark contrast to Trump’s introduction of Pence, which was held at a Manhattan hotel last weekend. At that event, Trump spoke mostly about himself for 30 minutes before getting around to introducing his vice presidential pick. While Trump left the stage as soon as the Indiana governor stepped up to the lectern, Clinton sat behind Kaine as he spoke.

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

The One Habit For Better Sleep You Might Have Overlooked

2016-07-23-1469284338-2705449-Stocksy_GuilleFaingold.jpg

You know that sleep is essential for good health, and you’ve tried everything: munching on sleep-enhancing superfoods, banning screens from the bedroom, and getting sleep tips from Arianna Huffington (she’s serious about it).

But it turns out there’s a super easy, science-backed method for improving your snoozing, and it’s probably one you haven’t considered: sleeping naked. (Sounds great in this humidity, anyway!)

According to a report on The Cut, sleeping in the nude can help you clock those prescribed seven to eight hours and improve the quality of your zzz’s. So prepare to say adios to your trusty pajama set–it’s just not necessary.

RELATED: Could Hormones Be The Reason Why You’re Feeling Bloated?

Read on for three benefits of going to bed in the buff.

1. It’s cooler
According to a study by the University of Amsterdam, you get better–AKA deeper–sleep when you have a lower body temperature. So when your skin is cool from not wearing anything (ever felt the heavenly sensation of cold sheets?) it’ll be easier for your body to drift into a quality sleep. Added bonus: It’s cheaper than blasting your air conditioner.

2. It may boost your metabolism
A study done in 2014 showed that cool temperatures alter your body fat and metabolism. Lowering your body temperature by sleeping naked will do that, by burning calories as your body attempts to keep warm. It’s kind of like the best workout ever.

3. It helps with intimacy
Sleeping nude not only benefits your body–it can help with your relationship as well. Having intimacy issues? Hit the sack without any clothes on, which can trigger a release of oxytocin, AKA “the love hormone.”

And if nudity is not your thing, just make sure your PJs are made out of breathable material (bye, synthetics). The cooler you feel, the deeper you’ll sleep.

Quin mat a Palomino Molero? (Narrativa (Punto de Lectura)) (Spanish Edition)

Mario Vargas Llosa creates an intensely woven detective story where tension and suspense travel through history. In a stage dominated by corruption, where prejudice and disparity constitute a country’s social reality, truth becomes a confusing array of images in a hallucinatory game of mirrors. Through an ambiance that dazzles and captures the attention, this novel is a faithful reflection of the character of an era and a denunciation of the excesses of power. ?I wrote Quien mato a Palomino Molero? in outrage after the murder of a young airman from Talara’s military base was red taped by the administration.

What We Didn’t Hear In Trump’s Acceptance Speech

At 75 minutes long, Donald Trump’s acceptance speech to be the GOP’s presidential nominee, broke records for length ― and we suspect volume. But while we can debate ‘til the cows come home whether Melania wore the same dress twice or Ivanka used a fan for that wind-blown hair look during her speech, there is one thing that there is no debate about:

Trump did not so much as utter the words “Social Security” or “Medicare.”

And what should we conclude from that?

There are 10,000 people a day turning 65 in this country and the federal safety nets for them, by most accounts, are going to collapse under the strain. And Trump said nothing.

If nothing is done, the Social Security Trust Fund will be depleted by 2034 (the Congressional Budget Office says it could be as soon as 2025), at which point the system will shrink benefits to 79 percent of current levels. And Trump said nothing.

By 2030, fully 18 percent of the nation will be at least 65, according to Pew Research Center population projections. Social Security represents almost 40 percent of our elderly’s monthly income. About half of older single people ― think widows here ― rely on Social Security for 90 percent or more of their income, says the SSA. And still, Trump said nothing.

In 2015, spending on Medicare was 15 percent of the entire federal budget. For perspective, 16 percent of the budget, or $ 602 billion, paid for all our military, defense and security-related international activities. When Trump talks about making America safe again, does that include older people being safe from poverty? We don’t know because, again, Trump said nothing.

Older people are the biggest group of users of prescription drugs. In the past two years, the prices of commonly used generic drugs have surged, with some prices 15, 25, and even 75 times what they cost just months ago. According to a recent report by federal health officials, prescription-drug spending rose 12.6 percent in 2014, the latest year for which data are available. It is expected to rise another 7.3 percent a year through 2018. Who uses prescription drugs the most? Older people do. And Trump said nothing.

So besides those painfully long 75 minutes of Trump speaking in the RNC spotlight, what has the GOP nominee said about Social Security and Medicare up til now? Not much. His website does not include either under “Issues,” and in primary debates, he has said he would go after fraud and waste in these government programs with the implication that that would make it all better. And in addition to pledging to get  the ACA (Obamacare) repealed as one of his first acts in office, he also doesn’t think it’s necessary for people to be forced to have health insurance.

He just hasn’t said anything about what they should do if they get sick.

With The Donald, sometimes you need to read the pauses ― not just be grateful for them.

The Mindful Wisdom of Pokémon Go

I have to admit it: Pokémon Go is one of the funnest games I’ve played in a long time. I’m old enough to have missed the Pokémon phenomenon when it first came around, but it’s easy to see why the game is taking the world by storm. (It’s been downloaded by more than 30 million people in the last two weeks.) Catching pokémon is not only ridiculously fun, it’s community-oriented, it gets people out of the house, and it’s non-zero-sum. Because of that last feature, the game tends to build bonds rather than break them. For example, the place where I live with my partner is in easy range of three (three!) pokestops, so we can both catch the same pokémon! No scarcity models for us!

If you haven’t played the game yet, you may at least have seen crowds of people–not all of them children–gathered around a statue, fountain, or some other landmark, staring into their phones. Or ravening mobs stampeding after invisible objects in Central Park. Such scenes might lead you to believe that Pokémon Go is all about checking out of the real world and disappearing into a cloud of fantasy. But, as a meditation teacher and mindfulness coach, I’ve found that you can both enjoy the game and easily turn it into a system to generate awareness and presence. Here’s how:

    more from Michael W. Taft

Pay Attention – Mindfulness meditation teaches you to pay attention to the present moment, and so does Pokémon Go. When you are about to cross the street for example, taking a moment to check in with your surroundings, the presence of onrushing 18-wheelers, open sewer holes, or similar dangers can enhance your health and wellbeing. Keep checking the map in the app against the actual streets, buildings, parks, bodies of water, and so on around you. And it’s awesome for teaching you all the art objects–many of which you may never have seen before–in your neighborhood, because lots of them are pokéstops.

Take a Moment to Breathe – It’s really easy to get so caught up in the excitement of the game that you lose all awareness of your body in the present. Pokémon Go does, however, offer you several excellent opportunities to take a pause and breathe. Whenever you switch screens, use this as a “time-out” to simply breathe and feel your body sensations. The game will wait until you take the next onscreen action. Also, because it gets you outside and walking, there are infinite chances to sit under trees, talk with your neighbors, or just enjoy some nature–all good times to check in with your breathing.

Feel Your Emotions – Pokémon Go is amzingly good at charging you with emotional ups, downs, and highwire excitment. That kind of emotional intensity is fabulous for mindfulness practice, if you take the time to check in with your feelings. For example, when you are about to attempt to catch a rare, valuable, and high-CP critter, take advantage of the pause before you toss your first pokéball. Feel the tension in your belly — is that anxiety or excitement? Notice the sensations of desire and fear that are at the emotional core of this moment. And if you lose a gym battle, pause to feel the sensations of disappointment and sorrow, before moving on. Win something big? Feel those awesome feelings as clearly as you can.

These hints should get you going, but don’t stop there. I’ve found that there are dozens of ways to use the game to not only have a blast, but also to bake mindfulness and presence into every moment. Give it a shot and thanks for reading. I have to take off now — there’s a Flareon in my house I want to get!

9 Simple Ways To Reduce Waste In Your Home

Unless you live a zero-waste lifestyle, there is always room for improvement when it comes to taking care of the planet.

While the abstract idea of reducing one’s waste can be overwhelming, a great place to start is within the comfort of your own home.

Little changes such as switching to cloth bags instead of plastic ones or making a concerted effort to recycle cans and bottles can make a big difference in your waste output.

Below, 9 simple changes you can make to reduce waste in your home.

    1. Get to know the rules of recycling.

Don’t be intimidated by the complicated symbols and sorting rules. Navigating the recycling system is actually quite simple once you do a little research. Since recycling standards vary from place to place, find out the specific rules for your area.

While it’s better to implement reusable packaging in your home wherever possible, recycling is the next best option and it will prevent excess waste from heading for the landfill.

    2. Ditch the plastic bags.

One of the simplest ways to decrease the amount of waste you produce is to use reusable bags while shopping. Instead of relying on your supermarket’s plastic bags, bring your own cloth ones to pack up your items and tote them home. Keeping a bunch of extra bags in the trunk of your car or right by the door is an easy way to make sure you don’t forget them at home.

What does your Monday look like? #julynine #styleoftheday #aixtote

A photo posted by July Nine (@julyninebrand) on

    3. Make a meal plan.

In addition to material waste, food waste is a huge problem in American households. However, it’s entirely preventable if the consumer follows one simple rule: only buy groceries that you know will eat. It sounds like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how much food is regularly thrown into the garbage in America.

    4. Start relying on reusable containers.

Once you start buying only what you need, take it to the next level by storing food properly, which will extend its life and keep things fresh for as long as possible.

Invest in some quality airtight containers for things like baking ingredients, cereals, and other things that can stale quickly. If you buy loose food items from farmer’s markets or bulk bins at stores like Whole Foods, reusable containers are especially important to have in your kitchen.

    5. Start composting.

Every day, a large amount of what you throw into the trash could be composted and returned to the earth. If you have a bin and some extra space, you can easily start a compost that could feed back into your garden. Your excess food won’t go to waste, your garden will be full of nutrients and you can feel better about your impact on the planet. Win, win, win.

    6. Learn to repair rather than discard.

When was the last time you repaired something broken rather than throwing it away to purchase a new one? Can’t remember? Same. But buying a few high-quality items and repairing them when necessary is so much better for the planet than buying loads of cheap, disposable stuff.

The next time a strap pops off of a tank top or a lamp stops working, spend a few minutes to see if it’s fixable, rather than throwing it in the garbage and ordering a new one.

    7. Cancel unnecessary mail.

If your mailbox is overloaded with catalogs and junk mail each day, take a few minutes to cancel subscriptions and stop unsolicited junk mail. It can be as simple as going online or picking up the phone to be removed from a mailing list. It’s a bit of an inconvenience, sure, but your coffee table will be less cluttered and the amount of paper waste you produce will be cut significantly.

    8. Stop using disposable plates.

Even if washing the dishes is the bane of your existence, the waste created by paper plates and plastic utensils isn’t worth it. Stop resorting to paper and plastic and get those hands dirty.

    9. And at the very least, stop buying plastic water bottles, please.

Water bottles and paper coffee cups are huge wastes of material. Buy a durable water bottle and a cute coffee thermos so you can take your beverages wherever you please. You’ll find yourself feeling a lot more hydrated and a lot less wasteful.

    Ted Cruz: Courageous Traitor

The surreal spectacle of Texas Senator Ted Cruz standing at the microphone at the Republican National Convention was amazing to behold. He thumbed the eye of the nominee and his supporters. He ignored the pledge he made to support the Republican nominee. He left some convention delegates foaming at the mouth in anger, some shaking their heads in disappointment, and others quietly cheering. He imperiled his political future. Importantly, however, he also delivered a master class in political courage and treachery.

Courage? Yes, courage. It took courage to tell a hostile crowd of fervent Donald Trump supporters that they picked the wrong person to be their nominee. It took courage to tell those same delegates and voters around the country that they should not support Donald Trump. I know he didn’t use those words exactly, but make no mistake about it: “vote your conscience” is the same as saying “anybody but Trump.” It’s one thing to say it to friends at the dinner table. It’s another thing altogether to say it in front of thousands of people in a room and millions more watching at home.

But it was also the most traitorous political move in American political history. Benedict Arnold, Judas Iscariot, and Marcus Junius Brutus would be impressed. Political geeks know that party conventions are multi-day marketing events. Long past are the days in which they picked the nominee. Their only purpose is to promote and propel the nominee into the general election. Every person who speaks at a convention knows the deal and the expectation that they will assist in that effort. To understand this but use someone else’s party to promote your agenda, with all there is at stake, is the height of treachery. Cruz, yet again, put himself above the party.

Courage and treachery are common in politics. Rarely do you see it displayed by one person simultaneously. Cruz, who is conducting himself as someone who has already begun the 2020 campaign, delivered an amazing “daily double.” His 2020 plan, however, requires Trump to lose this year. Cruz is doing all he can to make sure his plan, not Trump’s is what prevails.

His next book, More than Just Partisanship: Conservatives and Black Voter Suppression will be published in 2017 by New York University Press. He blogs at MichaelFauntroy.com.

Sh*t’s Bad Right Now, So Here’s A Short Story About A Rescued Cat

    2016-07-21-1469123925-9440893-lauren1.jpeg

Shit’s kind of heavy for all of us right now, and we have a long road ahead, but I thought maybe, just maybe, you’d like five minutes of light reading about how I saved a cat and she saved me.

    Her name is FatFace.

She’s been feral for at least five years and she has three teeth and she weighs under five pounds.

    2016-07-21-1469123962-4057465-lauren2.jpeg

FatFace was part of a feral colony my neighbor took care of, and which I’ve subsequently taken over after my neighbor moved across town.

I enjoy our cat colony, which totals between 10-12 mostly black or Russian blue cats, but let me tell you something about taking care of cat colonies: Don’t publicly share that info at parties. One time I was at a networking event and met a handful of interesting people and had to stop this sentence from coming out of my mouth: “Oh, man. I have to get going! My cat colony is going to be piiiiissed if I don’t get home soon for feed time.”

(Side note: Our colony is fixed and if any genitalia-sporting cats come into the colony, my former neighbor traps them and gets them fixed through the Austin Humane Society’s trap-neuter-release program.)

    2016-07-21-1469124003-4024795-lauren3.jpeg

FatFace was one of the oldest cats in the colony, and like most of the other ferals, she was terrified of us. Most of her time was spent hiding under the neighbor’s house or keeping herself at a distance, squinting, watching our every move. However, we took a shine to the little goober because of her tiny stature and her expressive face. When I acquired the colony and discovered she only had three teeth, I began feeding her soft food.

    2016-07-21-1469124049-7101457-lauren5.jpeg

Over the course of nine months, FatFace went from eating soft food we left out, to letting us get very close to her, to letting us touch her, to letting us brush her, to letting us pet her. Now I’m happy to say she lives in our house and enjoys sleeping on my butt and sniffing my armpits. She also enjoys curling up like a tiny donut.

    2016-07-21-1469124111-559913-lauren6.png

Here are some other fun fact about FatFace:

    She’s between 5-10 years old.

We called her “he” for five years until I asked my vet to check out her netherparts.

She also likes to sleep on my chest and stare at me from about two-to-three inches from my face.

She does not like to be picked up; she makes this pathetic “muu-annn” sound when you do it.

She doesn’t like fancy-ass soft food; she likes good-ol’ mystery meat from Friskies.

We’ve managed to put one pound on her; she now weighs over five pounds.

My bf thinks she is part dwarf cat.

    She has mouth herpes.

She loves when you push on her nose really hard. She gets so into it that she might bite your face.

She doesn’t mind if you scratch her stomach — but not the feet.

She’s a very affectionate, chill cat. Even when she’s ready to party at 3AM or eat at 7AM, she just stares at us or head bunts us.

She’s kind of a slob. Because she has mouth herpes and few teeth, she can’t eat or groom well. Most of the time we get salmon sneezes all over our faces.

During the day, I’ll lay on the bed next to her and instantly fall asleep.

At night time I can no longer get work done because she sleeps on my neck.

She’s very much loved by us.

    2016-07-21-1469124146-6102112-lauren7.jpeg

I’ve never owned a cat before, and I never thought I could love a cat as much as I do. She has brought great joy to my life, and I hope I bring joy to hers.

IVF Treatment Is Not Linked To Increased Risk Of Breast Cancer

Women doing in-vitro fertilization can breathe easy about at least one thing: a recent study finds that the treatment is not linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.

A large study of over 25,000 women in the Netherlands concluded that after about 21 years, women who went through IVF between 1983 and 1995 were no more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer compared to both the general population and women who were treated for infertility but didn’t undergo IVF at around the same time.

The study, which examined different types of infertility treatments instead of simply comparing women with infertility to the general population, is considered a more accurate way of assessing the potential impact of IVF treatments on cancer risk.

This is because women with infertility may be more prone to certain cancers because of the hormone imbalances that made them infertile in the first place.

“These findings are consistent with absence of a significant increase in long-term risk of breast cancer among IVF-treated women,” wrote the researchers. The study was published in the journal JAMA and conducted by scientists at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women around the world, and as the number of women who use IVF continues to rise, they and their health care providers have become concerned about a possible link between the two. The hormones estrogen and progesterone have both been implicated in cancer risk, and IVF treatment temporarily boosts and lowers these hormones in women beyond normal levels in order to stimulate egg growth and create a receptive uterine environment for embryos.

In addition to finding no increased risk for women who had IVF treatment, the researchers found that cancer risk was significantly lower for women who had seven or more IVF cycles, compared to women who had just one or two IVF cycles. Breast cancer risk was also significantly lower for women who had a poor response to their first IVF cycle. There was also no increased incidence in followup greater than 20 years for both groups of women who underwent some kind of infertility treatment.

    And now, for the caveats…

Dr. Jessica Young, a breast surgeon and director of the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, praised the study for its large sample size and long-term follow-up with the participants.

However, Young, who was not involved in the research, also pointed out several caveats about the study’s data. Researchers were only able to follow up with the women until they were about 60 years old, and a significant portion of women who will develop breast cancer get diagnosed later in life. Women have a 1-in-42 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer in their 50s, but that rate increases to one in 28 in a woman’s 60s

Secondly, she pointed out that the participants received IVF treatment in the 1980s and 1990s, and since then IVF treatment have changed so much that these findings may not be applicable to women who get IVF treatment today.

Finally, there were also some differences in the population that suggest some fundamental differences between Dutch women and women in the U.S., which may make it difficult to generalize the findings for Americans. For instance, 64 percent of the women with breast cancer in the study were diagnosed before the age of 51, while the median age of breast cancer diagnosis in the U.S. is 61. Nevertheless, Young found the research a valuable addition to the body of knowledge about IVF treatment and breast cancer.

“This study adds to the scarce literature available on this difficult subject, and the conclusion shows that the breast cancer risk was not seen to be increased with infertility treatment usage,” Young wrote in an email to HuffPost.

This research confirms past studies on the same topic

The Netherlands study aligns with a recent 2013 study of over 87,000 women that found IVF does not increase risk of breast and gynecological cancers, as well as a 2014 study of almost 10,000 women that found that fertility drugs used to stimulate ovulation were also not linked to increased breast cancer risk. A 2007 study among over 54,000 women with infertility problems reached the same conclusion.

While most research to date doesn’t establish a clear link between fertility treatments and increased cancer risk, the relationship is a difficult one to investigate. Women who are infertile may have hormone problems that make them more likely to develop cancer later on, and untangling the effects of the medicine versus the hormone imbalances that led to their infertility is tricky for researchers. For instance, a 2012 study found that women who go through IVF early on in life are at higher risk of developing breast cancer than those who don’t have treatment, but researchers couldn’t say whether the treatment caused the heightened risk or if it was something else.

The second challenge lies in the difficulty of collecting data for this kind of research. Dr. Wendy Chen explained the challenges of collecting fertility and cancer risk information in a post for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

“The ideal study would look at how long and in what doses women take fertility drugs, and whether those who took the highest doses for the longest period had the greatest rise in cancer occurrence,” Chen wrote. “But that kind of data has not been consistently collected.”

Dan Savage Has Had Enough Of ‘Pasty White’ Jill Stein Supporters

Dan Savage, sex-advice columnist and host of popular podcast “Savage Lovecast,” has some strong arguments against fed-up progressives voting for Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate.

Savage unloaded on a Stein supporter who called into his show in May, colorfully reiterating an oft-made argument about the privilege inherent in gambling on a Donald Trump presidency. Perhaps more significantly, the podcast host made an interesting point about what it would take for a real multiparty system to get off the ground in the United States. (While the exchange took place over a month ago, it garnered national attention this week thanks to Seattle’s The Stranger, where Savage got his start and remains editorial director.)

Savage appeared to agree with the caller that the two-party system is in need of radical reform. But rather than merely run candidates in presidential elections when the stakes are highest and the spotlight greatest, Savage said marginal political parties should make a better effort to develop their presence at the state and local level before making a run for the White House.

“I have a problem with these fake, attention-seeking, grandstanding Green/Libertarian party candidates who pop up every four years, like mushrooms in sh*t, saying that they’re building a third party,” Savage opined.

“Where are the Green Party candidates for city councils? For county councils? For state legislatures? For state assessor? For state insurance commissioner? For governor? For f**king dogcatcher?” Savage continued. “I would be so willing to vote for Green Party candidates who are starting at the bottom, grass-roots, bottom up, building a third party, a viable third party.”

HuffPost podcast “So That Happened” interviewed Jill Stein back in June:

Savage conceded that there are some Green Party candidates in state and local offices, but claimed that there is no systemic effort to get them elected across the country.

Stein has pushed back against this critique in the past, claiming that the Green Party does run local candidates across the country but they receive little media coverage.

“We have had many city councillors like Cameron Gordon in Minneapolis, school committee members, mayors, state representatives and county commissioners,” Stein said in a Reddit AMA in May.

“At the same time, we don’t want to give a free pass to the corporate predators that are occupying the presidential races,” Stein said. “It’s outrageous that a common-sense community point-of-view is being locked out.”

In his profanity-laden exchange with the Stein supporter, however, Savage also rejected some of the circular logic of progressives backing third-party candidates. On the one hand, these voters argue that there is no difference between Democratic and Republican presidential candidates, and on the other hand, they suggest that allowing the more conservative of the two to be elected would lead to such extreme conditions that it would spark a “revolution,” Savage said.

(The actress Susan Sarandon is, for example, a Bernie Sanders supporter who hinted that electing Trump ― now the Republican presidential nominee ― could ultimately lead to a revolution.)

Savage noted that the Republican and Democratic candidates can either be indistinguishable, or one can be so extreme that it would prompt a revolution, but not both.

“They’re exactly the same, exactly as awful, but one would bring the revolution and one wouldn’t,” he said. “Which means they weren’t exactly the same and they weren’t equally awful.”

Savage concluded by reiterating a more common argument for backing the Democratic candidate: that only whiter, more privileged people can afford to risk allowing Trump to be elected president.

“Disaster will come” if Trump is president, Savage stated. “And the people who’ll suffer are not going to be the pasty white Green Party supporters — pasty white Jill Stein and her pasty white supporters. The people who’ll suffer are going to be people of color. People of minority faiths. Queer people. Women.”

Stein did not mention the prospect of a revolution in her Reddit AMA, but she did claim there is little difference between presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Trump.

“It’s hard to say which is the greater evil,” Stein said.

But while there is a modicum of truth to Stein’s arguments about Clinton’s history of backing trade deals and foreign interventions unpopular with progressives, the Green Party standard-bearer erroneously claimed that Trump backed raising taxes on the rich. Trump has proposed over $ 9 trillion in tax cuts that would disproportionately go to the wealthiest Americans. He clarified a May remark suggesting he’d raise taxes, saying he meant he was open to tax rates higher than his proposed lower taxes, not increases relative to the current tax code.

Why Heartache Is Good For You

The best is yet to come.

    Dear ex-boyfriend,

I never got to say thank-you.

When you left me I was broken. You walked away without even a glance back, no second thought, not even a “sorry.” I was lost.

For months you stayed in my head, as pain, wondering where you were and what you were doing. How could you just leave me here on the floor?

    Unable to understand.

    And then I did.

I’d blindly marched in, eyes tightly shut and hands over my ears, I refused to speak out when it felt wrong – surely this was it, surely this was love. It was definitely my turn to get it right.

And all the while, deep down inside, this quiet screaming, “this isn’t right, this isn’t healthy.” We cheered each other on, deeper and deeper, drowning out the doubt.

I guess you just figured it out first, or perhaps the pretty girl helped you see the flaws in what we’d created.

    Either way, it was over.

It took the longest while for me to see how right you were.

What I thought was my heart breaking, my world collapsing, my chance of happiness ending, was simply me growing, me getting better.

I found my voice, my sense of self, my confidence.

And now from the most genuine place I’m saying thank-you.

If I hadn’t gone through all of that with you, all of your pain, all your heartache, I wouldn’t be able to feel the happiness I feel now, the connection I have now and the love I’m falling into right now.

The best is definitely yet to come.

    What did you learn?

Your Office Is Making You Fat

The way buildings are designed can play a pivotal role in encouraging people to lead healthier lifestyles.

That’s been the goal of Karen Lee, a former New York City health official who now consults on physical environment design. Lee has a vision for offices and residential buildings that are conducive to physical activity — promoting stair use instead of elevators, for example, and being easily accessible to outdoor spaces.

Under the administration of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Lee helped create a set of guidelines for building designers to improve the health of inhabitants. Features like open, prominent stairs and daylight exposure are now fundamental to the city’s new building projects. Lee also introduced a health credit for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, allowing buildings with bike storage and showers, for example, to get more points in green certification.

As public awareness of the health risks associated with inactivity and unhealthy diets grows, workplaces are helping employees make healthier decisions. Gyms are a now common sight at many workplaces, standing desks have seemingly infiltrated every industry and office kitchens offer up fresh fruit over chips. But with the typical American spending nearly 50 hours a week at work, there’s a lot of untapped potential in how buildings can be more effective at promoting employee health.

Work days are pretty sedentary, with many employees perched on chairs for hours on end without moving around, and new lifestyle changes, like a 20-minute walk outside, take time to really develop into habits.

A building’s interior elements ― such as stairs, furniture and signs promoting physical activity ― are key to that behavioral change, according to Lee. That’s where health-focused building plans come in.

In New York, numerous libraries, city agencies, police precincts and fire stations have adopted the city’s active design guidelines, which use design to tackle obesity and other related health issues.

“The guidelines have had a tremendous impact. We do it for all our public buildings,” said Margaret Castillo, chief architect with the city’s Department of Design and Construction. “We talk about making stairs prominent and beautiful so no one would think of taking the elevator, and making connections between a public building and a plaza.”

Daylight makes a big difference. A planned health services building in Chelsea will have outdoor stairs, so people can look at the surrounding trees as they walk up and down. A fire station in Brooklyn will have a central training area that receives natural light and fresh air through the roof. The city hopes to install rooftop gardens on some public buildings to further boost activity and improve employees’ mental wellbeing.

“Our roofs are an untapped resource in New York,” Castillo said.

While there isn’t yet a formalized way to track how inhabitants are using these building features, the city is developing evaluation tools to measure heart rate and other impacts of increased physical activity.

Interior office space should be configured for physical movement, Lee says. Instead of sedentary conference rooms, companies could install standing desks or equipment exercise bikes so employees can pedal during a meeting. Walking routes could be demarcated on the floor: a blue path for a 15-minute loop around one floor or, say, a red path for a 45-minute trek through the building.

“Why are standing desks the exception? Why do employees have to request them?” Lee said. “The default should be healthy furniture and spaces.”

Lee advocates for giving people crucial information about healthy options just as they’re about to take a certain action. Placing signs by elevators about the calories they could burn by walking, for instance, would increase their stair use. And it’s cheap ― exercise bikes are probably out of budget for many smaller companies, but plastic signs won’t be.

When companies are looking for potential office sites, they should be thinking about how the location promotes outdoor activity for employees, Lee adds. That includes easy access to bike lanes and proximity to public spaces, so that workers can walk to a park for lunch instead of eating at their desk.

And don’t forget about food. Offices should offer tap water, limit soda and other high-calorie beverages and make sure that healthy food on display, says Lee. At Google, nuts and fruits are placed in glass containers at eye level, while chips and candy are in out of sight in opaque bins. Lower prices for healthy options, too, could act as an incentive.

Employers, added Lee, have direct control over physical environments, which means they have a hand in providing healthy spaces for the people who work there.

“Once you put that bike rack in, once you’ve bought that furniture, those last for a long time,” Lee said. “It can make a great difference in employee health.”
