Command and Control: A Terrifying New Documentary About Broken Arrow Nuclear Accidents

2016-09-26-1474910793-6852386-commandandcontrol.jpgYou know what’s scary? A teenager dropped a wrench onto an aging but still very potent nuclear missile. Even scarier is that the wrench hit so hard it poked a hole in the missile, which led to a fuel leak, which led to a massive explosion, killing one man, injuring others, and destroying the launch facility. The good news is that it didn’t wipe out the entire Southeastern United States.

It really happened in 1980, in Arkansas. It wasn’t a secret. Arkansas’s young governor, Bill Clinton, appeared on television to reassure Arkansans that everything was all right. What is really terrifying is that 36 years later, with the stored weapons 36 years older and more vulnerable, almost no one even remembers it, and it was just one of many “broken arrow” accidents involving nuclear weapons stored on US soil. That’s just the ones we know about that took place in America. Who knows what is going on in other countries?

Based on a book by reporter Eric Schlosser, a new documentary called “Command and Control” tells the story of the Titan II Missile explosion in Arkansas with riveting interviews and seamless re-creations, moment by moment of the night the young airman dropped the wrench and the steps taken at great risk and great speed to prevent widespread contamination. We see how painful the events still are to the people involved and how terrifyingly close we — meaning all of us on the planet — are to complete accidental annihilation. Schlosser, whose calm delivery somehow makes it seem even more dire, has assembled a terrifying dossier of denial and neglect.

In an interview, Schlosser and director Robert Kenner talked about making the film and about the prospects for doing better.

The review of the 1980 incident concluded that it was the result of “human error.” Isn’t every failure under our control the result of human error? Wasn’t it human error that made missiles that have fuel explosions when they get hit with a wrench?

RK: Or its human error that they didn’t have a safety net. And the problem is human error shouldn’t have that kind of consequence.

ES: It’s a way of defending the system.

Would you say that the response to the 1980 accident did not lead to improved safety?

ES: The reporters in 1980 were hampered by their lack of ability to know the truth, which was that this warhead could have detonated. So this was a story that lasted for about two or three days and then it was largely forgotten. And if the Pentagon had been forthright that there were significant safety issues with this warhead, that there was a chance that it could have detonated and destroyed much of Arkansas and planted/deposited radioactivity up and down the eastern seaboard then there might have been more inquiry into what happened, how it happened, who is really to blame.

The Air Force in 1980 was in a tough spot. It was the height of the Cold War, the Russians had recently invaded Afghanistan, our nuclear arsenal was aging, our weapons systems were aging. They were reluctant to admit publicly that one of their crucial weapons, the Titan II missile, was old, obsolete and probably should be taken out of service. They were unwilling to do that, so instead of making that kind of admission there was an incentive to blame the little guy, to blame the operator, to say it was a mistake in human error that was responsible but as you implied at the very beginning, the human error was to believe we could create these systems and safely control them.

RK: We have to figure out where to put our nuclear waste from the plants that are powering much of the country, and you could tell that story. I think that such an amazing example of human error, that sort of hubris that this is controllable.

ES: This is a contemporary story. We have one repository for nuclear waste that we’ve opened up, a Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, the acronym is WIPP, and it’s in Carlsbad, New Mexico. It’s for transuranic waste to like plutonium and uranium and things like that but you really have to worry about plutonium. That can be deadly for tens of thousands of years, so they built this multibillion-dollar facility. It’s supposed to keep waste safely for tens of thousands of years and 15 years after it opened just a few years ago there was an explosion there and the explosion contaminated it with plutonium. They were trying to figure out why there would have been an explosion and it was because of Los Alamos where they were packing these big drums within their waste they were using kitty litter as a kind of moderator to prevent the stuff from reacting chemically and they used the wrong type of kitty litter.

RK: The most costly accident in US history.

ES: And so, here we build something confident that it would be secure for 15 or 20 thousand years and there is an explosion after 15. So maybe there are just certain things we should not do.

RK: But that’s the dark side. We were in England and the English Secretary of Defense talked about how we can get rid of these things, that we shouldn’t just think they are here and we are doomed because we got rid of chemical weapons. We are capable of changing the world and making it what we want. I mean our goal with this film at least is to make people think about the one issue, it’s the most important issue that we are not thinking about.

Are other countries doing better? Or worse?

ES: Well look, I’ll be patriotic for a moment, we invented this technology, we’re more experienced in it than any other country, I bet we built the best goddamn new nuclear weapons in the world, and it’s terrifying. Look at how close we have come to blowing ourselves up. We have serious, serious nuclear weapons accidents. And in the book, I look at the rate of industrial accidents in the different countries that have nuclear weapons as a rough measure of their ability and capacity to handle complex technological systems, so that’s very concerning about India, Pakistan, Russia, North Korea and it’s another argument why countries shouldn’t have these things.

It’s a huge concern right now, and not just among journalists or activists but at the highest level of the government there is genuine concern about the security of our nuclear command and control system, it’s a computerized network. It’s a closed network so you can’t just go online and tap into it but it has many, many nodes, many, many sensors, many, many humans and it’s vulnerable to insider attack and there would be a very strong incentive in the 21st century, to do harm. In the 20th century if you wanted to knock out your adversary’s nuclear arsenal, you had to do it with your own nuclear weapons. Well now it is conceivable, you could render it inoperable without ever having to touch it, or damage it, with software, even just cutting off the electricity. The true concern, the most remote possibility, is that someone could hack into the nuclear commander control system and launch a missile. It’s not inconceivable but more likely is somebody hacking in and trying to disable the arsenal or at the very least create uncertainty about the system. Once you start seeing anomalies in your system can you trust it, can you rely on it?

Edward Snowden was a relatively low-level private contractor at the NSA who was able to get some of the top secrets of the most top secret agents. And NSA is responsible for launch codes and the NSA is responsible for cryptographic equipment that decrypts the launch codes, so there’s reason to be concerned.

I think the President of United States is pretty great on this subject. I think that there is no political movement that would help them in any way. I think the speech he gave in 2009 was so far ahead of any kind of public awareness that we need to catch up to where he was seven years ago. I think it’s a safer world now than it was then, so things can change but part of it is to become conscious of the most important issue that no one is talking about.

What I Learned From Sprinkles!

I am writing this post 24 hours after the passing of “Mr. Sprinkles.” For 17.25 years, Sprinkles was our family dog, a Bichon. He came home with us when he was 8 weeks old in 1999.

Here’s some background on how I felt about getting a small fluffy house dog.

In 1998, we rescued a dog from the local animal shelter and named him “Teddy Bear.” He lived outside in a very nice dog pen.

The problem was that Teddy Bear was a runner. One time he got loose and ran and never returned home. I went looking for him and found him about 6 miles away. He was with two little kids at their house. He looked happy and they looked happy, so I kept driving.

As a kid in Chicago, I had two dogs that we kept in my parents’ home for a few months each time. My mother and father tried to handle them, but they were not dog people; my two brothers and I weren’t really dog lovers, either. Before Sprinkles, I never had a dog for more than 6 months.

Back to the story of Sprinkles.

My daughter Karia wanted a small fluffy house dog. My wife Karla agreed, but I was against it. I was done with trying to have a pet after Teddy Bear ran away. But as any good daddy does, I gave in to my daughter’s wish for a dog. I made it clear I would have nothing to do at all with this new dog.

Karla and Karia did research and decided on a Bichon. I have a friend that raised the breed, and they placed an order for one in the next litter. Once Sprinkles was born, they went by to visit him until he was ready to come home.

I was so dead-set against Sprinkles that when I drove them to visit him, I wouldn’t get out of the car. I was being stubborn and childish about having a small fluffy house dog. (I am now embarrassed by my actions in 1999.)

We picked Sprinkles up in August 1999 and brought him home. I wouldn’t pet him or acknowledge him. He was my daughter’s and wife’s dog and they would be fully responsible for him. I was still upset my dog Teddy Bear had run away and they had chuckled about it. I was having a daddy “pity party.”

Well, a few months had gone by since Sprinkles arrived, and I was holding firm to ignoring him. Then one day when was nobody was looking, I petted him and he gave me a look I never will forget. I keep secretly petting him and feeding him snacks for the next few months.

At the time, Sprinkles was getting bigger and was learning how to jump. One evening I was laying on the couch by myself, and he jumped on the couch and sat himself on my head. Then he laid in front of me and snuggled. I was hooked, but I wasn’t ready to admit it. I still acted like I was not into Sprinkles.

Finally, I could no longer hide how attached I had become to Sprinkles. We became inseparable. Karla trained him, but I was the one that let him do anything. Karia lost interest, so I had my way in with him for good.

I took him everywhere with me. He would go to the office with me and roam our building. Everyone knew Sprinkles at our company. I would take him for rides in my old convertible.

I grew up in the 1960s, so I loved the TV show “Lassie.” Sprinkles became my Lassie.

He knew when I didn’t feel well, and he would just lay at my feet and not move until he knew I was getting better. I begin to learn and appreciate the power of a pet.

Sprinkles was at his best as I healed over the last 17 years from anxiety, panic attacks, and incidents that would trigger post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

I was always amazed over the years that Sprinkles could feel when my anxiety level was up. He would just jump in the chair with me and not move. His energy would reduce my anxiety. I often told Karla how astounded I was that Sprinkles could feel what was going on in our lives and act accordingly.

Over the 17.25 years Sprinkles was in my life, he gave more to me than I gave him. He taught me so much about unconditional love, patience, calmness, happiness, and that we didn’t need a lot to be happy. I learned that humans can communicate with animals. He was one of my best friends.

The last year of his life was tougher on me than it was on him. I had trouble accepting that he was going blind and deaf, that he had exceeded a Bichon’s average lifespan, and that he was now old. Eventually, he was 100-percent blind and deaf in addition to other health problems.

Karla is a retired hospice nurse. She did a fabulous job caring for Sprinkles the last year of his life. I did the easy part. I just carried him around and let him share my recliner in the evening.

I often thought that someday someone might have to care for me this way as an elderly person. When I got frustrated because he couldn’t do what he used to, I would quickly think that someday I might be in his shoes. I hope someone will be patient with me.

A few days ago, he could no longer walk and would cry out in pain. Karla and I knew the time had come to let him go. We couldn’t be selfish.

I learned so much from the little fluffy dog that, in 1999, I didn’t want to have anything to do with. We can learn so much from our pets. Never underestimate their power and the love they bring into our lives.

Enjoy some pictures of Sprinkles. Rest in peace, Sprinkles, and thanks for giving me so much.

Mom’s Viral Post Shows Why The 70s And 80s Were Easier For Parents

A common refrain from parents today is that they wish they could raise their kids in simpler times, like the pre-Internet era of the 70s and 80s.

This viral Facebook post from mom and HuffPost blogger Bunmi Laditan highlights how the the Information Age is wearing on overwhelmed parents.

On Sunday, Laditan posted a photo of her computer screen on a website to purchase children’s vitamins.

“Being a modern parent is terrible,” the mom wrote. “I’d give my left tit to have parented in the 70s or 80s when all you had to do to be considered a good mom is to remember to wind down the windows when you smoke in the car.”

Laditan explained that she’s been shopping for vitamins since she recently learned that the Disney Pixar “Cars” gummy vitamins she gives her children are actually “sugary trash that cause leprosy and ADHD.”

She wrote, “For 45 minutes I’ve been comparing children’s vitamins, reading online reviews, and, inflammatory blog posts backed by no science that I both fear and respect.”

Lamenting the prospect of spending upward of $ 100 on children’s vitamins, probiotics and supplements, Laditan recalled her own experiences as a kid.

“Do you know what vitamins I had growing up?” she wrote. “NONE. DAYLIGHT WAS MY VITAMIN.”

Laditan continued, “Nothing about modern parenting is simple and it irritates me. I’ve seen the way some parents look at me when I give my son a juice box at the park. It’s juice, not Red Bull or margarita mix so calm down…”

Concluding her post, the mom said she’s about to spend a fortune on vitamins “because in 2016, you don’t really love your kids if you’re not a paranoid mess about their physical well being and willing to spend a small fortune on dye-free toothpaste made in the woods that tastes like elderberry and privilege.”

Laditan’s lament clearly resonated with other parents, as her post received over 87,000 likes and nearly 50,000 shares. Following up in the comments section, she posted photos of the frozen Kid Cuisine meals and Tampico orange juice her parents purchased with food stamps when she was a child.

In another comment, the mom explained that she focuses more on her kids’ overall well-being.

“We’re messy but I think we’re doing alright,” she wrote. “They’re all accounted for and are growing. That’s enough.”

Man Claiming To Be Boko Haram Leader Appears In New Video

BAUCHI, Nigeria Sept 25 (Reuters) – The purported leader of Nigerian Islamist militant group Boko Haram Abubakar Shekau appeared in a video posted on social media on Sunday in which he rejected statements by the country’s military that he had been seriously wounded.

The Nigerian military has said it has killed or critically wounded Shekau on multiple occasions in recent years, often swiftly followed by video denials by someone who says he is Shekau. Last month Nigeria’s air force said it had killed senior Boko Haram members and that Shekau had been wounded.

While the ensuing videos all show someone sporting Shekau’s distinctive beard, the grainy quality of the footage means it is not always possible to confirm if the person is the same as in the previous videos.

“You broadcast the news and published it in your media outlets that you injured me and killed me and here I am,” said a man purporting to be Shekau in a video addressed to “tyrants of Nigeria in particular and the west of Africa in general.”

“I will not get killed until my time comes,” he added in the 40-minute video posted on YouTube and delivered in Arabic and Hausa, which is spoken widely in northern Nigeria.

A statement issued by army spokesman Sani Usman said the footage showed that the man purporting to be Shekau was “unstable” and came as “another sign that the end is near for him.”

“Boko Haram terrorism as it was known, is gone for good. We are just counting down to the day when all the few remnants will be totally wiped out or brought to justice,” he said.

The statement did not explicitly say whether the army considered the man in the video to be Shekau.

Last month’s announcement by the air force came days after Islamic State, to whom Boko Haram pledged allegiance last year, announced the appointment of a new leader of the West African group in an apparent rejection of Shekau.

That appointment was later dismissed in a 10-minute audio clip on social media by a man purporting to be Shekau, exposing divisions within the jihadist group that has plagued Nigeria and neighbors Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Boko Haram has killed about 15,000 people and displaced more than 2 million in a seven-year insurgency aimed at creating a state adhering to strict Islamic laws.

It controlled a swathe of land in northeast Nigeria around the size of Belgium at the end of 2014 but was pushed out by Nigerian troops, aided by soldiers from neighboring countries, early last year.

In a sign the group remains capable of inflicting damage, suspected militants killed four Chadian troops and wounded six overnight in an attack near the town of Kaiga, two security sources told Reuters in Chad.

They added that seven of the Islamist militants had been killed in return fire.

What The Buddha Would Say To Mr. Trump

If a bull goes straight when the herd is crossing a road, then they will all go straight because he leads the way. The same among people. If the one who is thought to be the highest lives in goodness, the others do so too. The whole realm lives happily if the ruler lives rightly. The Buddha

This is true when the leader is virtuous and honest. But Donald Trump is leading his followers into a quagmire and they don’t even know it. He is using the most destructive of qualities–greed, hatred and delusion–to gain power and prestige. This is the behavior of an egomaniac who thrives at others’ expense.

We are not presuming to know what the Buddha might say to Mr. Trump, just as we don’t presume to know what might be said to any of us. But the Buddha clearly taught about the dangers of greed, hatred and ignorance, what he called the three poisons, that Trump displays frequently. Where greed grabs our desires, hatred uses fear to incite insecurity and then blames everyone else, while ignorance clouds our vision.

The three fires of greed, hatred and ignorance destroy the mind from which they are born. The Buddha

The mind is everything. What you think you become. The Buddha

Greed has many relatives, such as ambition, self-centeredness, pride, grasping and clinging, giving rise to dissatisfaction, irritation, frustration and anger. The craving to have and possess stops us from giving; it generates a fear of not having. Donald Trump personifies greed in his desperate desire to win at all costs, no matter how he does it. For instance, he insists on flying aboard his luxury jet, rather than a more practical airplane, at a cost to taxpayers of millions of dollars.

Hate is destructive, indiscriminate, like a snake it can rise up out of nowhere and attack. It is most seen in prejudice, whether against different races, political beliefs, or sexual preferences. When we are fixed in the belief that we are right, then anything that questions or threatens that belief becomes the enemy and must be eliminated. Hatred’s many bedfellows include criticism, sarcasm, misogyny, and racism. Need we say more?

The Buddha pointed out that such hatred becomes our own worst enemy for no matter how much we try to annihilate the hated one, the hate remains inside us, slowly destroying and eating away at our own happiness.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; while you are the one who gets burned. The Buddha

Abhorrence towards others is based on the belief that we are all separate from each other, that I am more important than you. This breaks friendships and families, while creating self-righteousness and arrogance. Prejudice closes our heart and shuts down our sensitivity.

The moment that you think of doing harm to someone, that thought harms you first. Unless you hate yourself, you can’t hate others. If you love others, that means that you create the feeling of love within you first, and then you offer the love to others. Your thoughts pass through your entire system, and are expressed through your mouth and through your hands and actions. Without thinking, you cannot speak or act. So the harmful thought, from its very origin, spoils your system. In other words, you can’t hit anyone else without striking yourself. Sri Swami Satchidananda

Where hatred closes our heart, delusion makes us believe there is a permanent, separate and fixed ‘me’ so that we take ourselves very seriously. It belies a lack of awareness, especially of anything outside ourselves. This is the ignorance of our essential connectedness with all others.

The heart is like a garden. It can grow compassion or fear. What seeds will you grow there? The Buddha

What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

Don’t Take DeBait

Don’t Take DeBait

As we approach the upcoming first debate between Hillary and Donald, few expect much beyond more spectacle and another news cycle in this already tedious media frenzy that is revealing the dark side of our collective consciousness just about everyplace we look.

We can see the unbelievable shallowness and hypocrisy in the media. We’ve become trapped between propaganda machines, cynical exploitation of psychopathic ranting or manufactured partisan scandals that would garner little more than a ‘time-out’ on the playground if we were as disciplined as our children. Moreover, people are either walking on eggshells for fear of starting yet another ideological pissing-contest or righteously predicting the end of the world if the ‘other’ side wins.

So much for democracy and the wisdom of the electorate.

What I predict is that Monday’s debate will be won or lost on Hillary’s ability to not get ‘baited’ by Donald and sucked into a name-calling contest or become defensive. I hope she’ll just be as Presidential as possible and not sink to the level of her opponent. I once learned that the only thing worse than being crazy is arguing with a crazy person or trying to make sense out of something that is nonsensical.

We get what we resist.

Sometimes things are not political even if the politicians are stirring the fire. For example, racism isn’t about Left or Right, it is a moral issue – not policy. Consistent lying in the face of factual evidence isn’t a strategy, it says something about a persons inability to distinguish truth from fiction or blatant disregard for who is listening.

America and the world are facing many intractable problems that threaten our way of life as we know it and the possibility of a more positive future for billions of human beings working to have a better life. What is needed is leadership, not grandstanding and not short term opportunism. I can understand that power is seductive, but we’ve also had leaders whose vision, commitment and integrity allowed them to rise above the game and show a level of statesmanship and character worthy of those they lead.

Who ever we vote for will more a reflection of who we are as individuals and as a society than it does about the candidates.

Our leaders are a mirror reflection of us an visa versa.

Choose.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

Staring Down The Epidemic Of Loneliness

I know the look when I see it. Eyes downcast, body either rigidly still or desperately fidgeting, discomfort clear. Some deep shame is working its way to the surface. Buried discomfort is forming into words. Sometimes the words are barely audible. Sometimes they’re shouted. I sit across from the shame, offering steady eye contact for the client who is ready to meet it. When given the opportunity, I meet the shame with acceptance.

As a licensed mental health counselor, it is my job to share space with individuals and hear their stories. Often these stories have shame woven into them. By “shame,” I’m referring to painful feelings of humiliation or distress, often turned towards the self (as opposed to feelings of guilt, which often relate more directly to behavior towards others). When we give voice to difficult things, as Brené Brown mentions in her TED talk, and when we meet them with empathy, we take away the power of shame.

But when shame festers without a voice, it can be isolating. And isolation, in turn, can lead to loneliness and feelings of worthlessness… which can continue to perpetuate shame. Loneliness and shame walk around, bullying our sense of human connection into hiding. In reading a recent New York Times article on the “epidemic of loneliness,” we learn that loneliness is an underlying cause of many chronic conditions, both physical and mental. How did we let this epidemic develop? Where have the points of connection gone, and what happened to the voices that help us to challenge shame?

It’s my opinion that we are isolated by our lack of ability to have difficult conversations. We are restricting our speech: we sometimes misuse trigger warnings as an acceptable form of avoidance; we question if an individual should be allowed to kneel in quiet protest during the national anthem at an athletic event; our social media and internet ads are tailored to match our own views, narrowing our perspective; we wonder if we can voice an opinion at a political rally without being met with physical violence. We are limiting our ability to connect with others in a respectful way. We are isolating ourselves from the person, and many times even disparaging the person, who holds a differing opinion from our own. And we are silencing our own voices out of fear of vulnerability and out of fear of retribution. We are, in effect, building the walls of loneliness and shame ourselves.

In counseling sessions, I find myself offering that steady eye contact to the clients ready to receive it. Along with an army of other therapists and helping professionals, I’m challenging shame with acceptance and staring down the epidemic of loneliness. Counseling provides an opportunity for the walls of isolation to disintegrate, for genuine connection and respect to occur in the midst of difficult conversations. It’s my hope to facilitate stronger human connections both inside the office and out, so that clients may share their shame resilience and foster connection in their own relationships.

I have hope for healing in my work and in our world. Together we can heal some of the divisions between people and within people that have allowed this epidemic of loneliness to grow. We need counseling for the safe space and genuine connection it provides. We need each other, to normalize difficult conversations with respect. We need ourselves, to find our own voices and activate our own ears. We will find connection in our disagreements as well as our shared interests, and we may well help to spread an epidemic of connection.

This Is Everything That’s Wrong With Caregiving In America Today

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine just published a very sobering look at the state of family caregiving in the U.S. Here are some of the things the group found.

1. Washington needs to get real already.

Public policy lags woefully behind today’s reality. There are nearly 18 million people caring for a relative who is 65 or older and yeah, they pretty much all need help. The report said caregivers aren’t being supported, are cracking under the strain, and therefore it behooves the next administration to actually deal with the problem. We’d add that perhaps the two main party presidential candidates would like to elaborate on what they intend to do for the the nation’s family caregivers ― in total there are 34 million of them ― whose unpaid services are worth about $ 500 billion a year, according to the Rand Corp.

The Academies’ report found that people caring for elderly family members devote 253 hours a month to caregiving — almost the equivalent of two full-time jobs. Five years is the median duration that family members care for older adults with high needs and that’s one heck of a long time to live in purgatory.

Plus those who do step up and take on the responsibility get financially dinged as a thank-you. Caregivers miss work, don’t apply or accept advanced jobs because of the time commitment, and some just drop out of the workforce altogether to care for their loved one. The report says that lost wages and benefits average $ 303,880 over the lifetimes of people 50 and older who stop working to care for a parent. Plus for added insult to that injury, a lower earnings history also means reduced Social Security payments for caregivers when they become eligible.

2. As a nation, we’ve been asleep at the wheel.

Way back in 2009, a solution to that last problem was proposed and its simplicity is hard to understate: Just give caregivers a Social Security credit for a defined level of deemed wages during a specified time period. So far, nothing has happened.

And while you’re at it, how about some job protections for workers who carry the weight of caregiving on their already overburdened shoulders?

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act doesn’t cover 40 percent of the workforce. The FMLA lets eligible employees take 12 weeks of unpaid time off to care for certain family members, but only applies to those who work for federal, state and local governments and private companies with more than 50 employees. And ineligible family relationships for leave include sons- and daughters-in-law, stepchildren, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews. More to the point: Who can afford to give up 12 weeks of pay?

In 2011, 17 percent of caregivers didn’t take leave because they feared losing their jobs, according to the report.

Again, a simple solution: Make caregivers a protected class under existing job discrimination laws and make sure employers support their workers caring for family members.

3. You can’t care for the patient without caring about the caregiver. And nobody cares about caregivers.

Beyond just the economic costs of caregiving, the report notes that the social and physical toll of caregiving gets little attention ― and it damn well should.

“If their needs are not recognized and addressed, family caregivers risk burnout from the prolonged distress and physical demands of caregiving, and the nation will bear the costs,” the report said. Preach it, man, preach it.

Caregivers have told us how they lose themselves and life becomes entirely centered on the patient. Cathie Harmon, who cares for her husband, told us about going for her annual physical only to have the doctor spend most of the visit asking questions about her husband. “I only get probably 18 minutes a year with a health professional,” she told The Huffington Post. “I realize I am a boring patient and that his case is likely fascinating for them, but as a caregiver, I need my appointment to be about my health.”

Spot on, Cathie. Instead of delivering “patient-centered” care, health-care providers should adopt “family-centered” models that include making sure that caregivers don’t lose their identities ― or minds.

4. Caregiving can actually kill you.

Family caregivers were found to have lower physical well-being, higher stress levels, higher rates of chronic disease, and greater risk for depression, social isolation and financial losses than their non-caregiving counterparts, notes the report. It’s called “Caregiver Syndrome” and a Stanford University study reported that 40 percent of Alzheimer’s caregivers die from stress-related disorders before their patient dies.

5. Caregivers are daughters, sons, and spouses. They are not skilled nurses.

Until you’ve become a caregiver, you just have no idea what it entails these days.

In a nutshell: Caregivers do what nurses used to. They deal with feeding and drainage tubes, catheters, dialysis ports and other complicated medical devices; they perform wound care, deliver injections, test and record glucose and blood pressure; they perform personal hygiene tasks for their patients and prepare dietician-directed meals. They do a whole bunch of other things that they never in a million years would have thought they would be asked to do and many of those tasks are extremely unpleasant. Among themselves, family caregivers share tips online about how not to puke when you change your father’s diaper. Or how to handle it when you are wiping his behind and he orders you to “go deeper to where it itches.”

And yes ― surprise, surprise ― delivering these services that once fell squarely into the purview of trained, skilled medical professionals causes caregiver stress. The study’s authors noted that most caregivers are “learning by trial and error and fearing that they will make a life-threatening mistake.” Think about that. You put forth your best effort and you might accidentally kill someone.

“He can do home dialysis,” one well-meaning visiting nurse suggested to me in reference to my husband’s need for kidney dialysis. In-home dialysis means I would be the one inserting sterile needles into his arm and hooking up tubes that remove his blood from his body, put it in a machine for cleansing and then return it to his body. All this in the comfort of our bedroom! This is presumably something we’d have to do at night because it’s necessary that I monitor the process and during the day, I go to work. There was no mention of when I would sleep. And why was that? Because I’m just the caregiver, not the patient.

6. Caregivers are often unwilling participants and most always voiceless ones.

Medicare and private insurers are to blame for the unwilling part. To save money, they rush to discharge patients from the hospital with the implicit expectation that family caregivers can support the patient at home and manage the transition from hospital to home ― again with little or no training.

Family caregivers must deal with a wide range of providers in a variety of systems ― doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, insurance companies, and billing offices. They routinely provide information about their patient’s health history, medications, past diagnoses and previous treatment attempts. Caregivers are on the job every day and are the first to see changes in a patient’s well-being or temperament. Simply put: We know when something is going wrong.

Yet nobody listens to caregivers. Despite the integral role that family caregivers play, “they are often marginalized or ignored” when it comes to having a voice at the table, the report said. Caregivers are regularly excluded from treatment discussions and decisions by the very providers who assume the availability and willingness of those caregivers to carry out the tasks included in that care plan.

And public policy allows that to happen. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) law protects a patient’s privacy and can mean the doctor doesn’t have to talk to family caregivers, notes the report. The report also noted that there are financial incentives to not spending time with family caregivers. Dealing with family caregivers takes time, and time is money. Let’s face it, there is no insurance or Medicare billing code for taking a call from your patient’s wife. Harsh, but true.

7. Things are only going to get worse.

It’s really just a numbers game. While the need for family caregivers is increasing, the number of available caregivers is decreasing.

The 65 and older demographic was 46 million strong in 2014 and is projected to be 98 million by 2060, according to the Administration on Aging. The percentage of the elderly who are projected to need caregiver support is expected to jump from 27 percent in 2012 to 37 percent in 2050. Lower birth rates, a hike in never-married or divorced older adults, and geographic distance from family members, all indicate that the pool of potential caregivers is shrinking.

So now that we all know this, the question becomes “what are we going to do about it?”

Piece Of Mind vs. Peace Of Mind

I have learned that more people love to talk than listen. Between the pundits, politicians, experts and social posters on the internet, everyone’s talking and expressing an opinion. But how many are really tuned in and listening?

These past few weeks I turned down the “noise” to address some personal matters that meant more to me than what people thought and said. I found it rather peaceful. No anxiety from the news and less time wasted scrolling through umpteen posts. I was able to have real conversations with people in person and by phone rather than just abrupt texts.

For years I was a better talker than listener. After my breast cancer diagnosis I was forced to listen to my doctors and to my own body that had been telling me for years to take it easier. I learned to ask questions and listen more intently. I also learned (slowly) to be quiet.

A skilled communicator knows how to express herself verbally and with purpose and how to listen with intent and sincerity. She doesn’t talk over someone or around them or hog the conversation. She knows how to punctuate a statement to get her point across and how to pause to elicit an effective response. Anyone can be a better listener. It just takes being quiet and focusing on the person in front of you or the situation around you with thought and without distraction. Many people practice their speaking skills, but it’s just as important to practice your listening skills.

Listening is not just about what you hear around you. It’s also listening to your inner voice. And it’s “listening” to someone’s body language and how he or she is expressing him/herself by remaining silent. Much can be heard without anyone saying a word if you are perceptive.

Being a good speaker makes people listen to you. Being a good listener puts people at ease.

It’s far better to give someone peace of mind rather than a piece of your mind.

Five steps to be a better listener:

  1. Disconnect from distractions around such as computers, iPhones, people
  2. Practice deep breathing techniques to help you concentrate and look the person speaking to you in the eyes
  3. Ask questions
  4. Repeat what he/she is saying to reinforce your concentration
  5. Count to 5 or 10 before interjecting your opinion into the conversation and avoid interrupting

Exasperated Mom Issues PSA About What To Say To Pregnant Women

A fed-up blogger is schooling the internet on pregnancy etiquette.

Jill Krause, who blogs about parenting at Baby Rabies, posted a spot-on video to Facebook called “What (Not) To Say To A Pregnant Woman.”

In the video, Krause, who is pregnant herself, offers a simple “suggestion” to people who are not pregnant. “The next time you are so taken aback by a pregnant woman’s appearance that you feel the need to say something to her, this is all you’re allowed to say,” she explains. The phrase in question: “You look amazing.”

“I don’t care if she looks like Jabba the Hutt incubating a small planet,” Krause adds. “You look amazing.” According to the mom, the alternative option is to shut the hell up.

Krause wrote in the caption that she made this video in response to a stranger who approached her in the grocery store, demanded to know her due date and then rudely responded “Damn, girl. You SURE it’s not twins?!” before walking away.

She said the video also goes out to anyone who believes they have the right to comment on a woman’s body, simply because she’s pregnant.

Krause wrote:

“There is no other human condition in which it seems to be acceptable for a stranger to approach someone and make comments about their body. I mean, I could have asked that guy if he was SURE he wasn’t drinking a 6 pack a night based on his beer gut, but that’s not appropriate. SO if you are so absolutely shocked by the size of a pregnant woman, especially one YOU DON’T KNOW, that you feel the need to say something to her? This is all you’re allowed to say.”

All other comments, she explained, are not endearing small talk. They’re just plain rude.

Amen.
