Elizabeth Warren Endorses Her Former Opponent Scott Brown For VA Secretary

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Thursday praised her onetime opponent Scott Brown, who President-elect Donald Trump is considering nominating to be secretary of veteran affairs.

In an interview with Boston’s WGBH, Warren offered enthusiastic support for Brown, whom she unseated in the often-contentious 2012 Massachusetts Senate race.

“If Scott Brown is the nominee for Veterans Affairs, I have no doubt that he would put his heart and soul into trying to help veterans,” she said. “And I would put my heart and soul into trying to help him do that. You bet I’d support that.”

Warren has a personal stake in the Department of Veteran Affairs ― all three of her brothers served in the military.

Brown has met with Trump to discuss the potential appointment.

“We obviously spoke about my passion and his passion, which is veterans and veterans issues,” Brown said last month. “And obviously I think the toughest job in the Cabinet is leading the VA, because while it has so many great angels working there, it has great problems as well.”

Trump is reportedly also considering 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for the role. Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) has been floated for the post as well.

Warren’s praise may be more curse than blessing for Brown. The Democrat is fiercely critical of Trump and his nascent administration. In turn, Trump has frequently berated Warren, mockingly calling her “Pocahontas” in reference to a 2012 controversy over her claims of Cherokee heritage.

Warren also discussed the potential nomination of 2012 GOP presidential nominee and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as secretary of state, but stopped short of endorsing him.

“I’d like to hear more,” she said. “But I think Mitt Romney is a smart man, and I think he’s got a pretty level headed view of the world.”

The Memoirs Of A Stupid Boy Who Ran Away From Home

In high school I used to look at my four years like a runway. After senior year I’d leave my hometown and never look back–not even once. I thought of my friendships with those around me as ones that would end, since I would be leaving to see the world.

Clearly there would be some sort of giant going away party complete with cakes and a huge arch over my driveway saying “GOOD LUCK TOM WE’LL MISS YOU” plastered all over it.

My old life was ending–my new life just beginning.

I hurried off to college like the big idiot that I was. I packed all my stuff in a couple suitcases and practically ran onto the plane. I basically left my Mom in a dust storm–kind of like the ones you see in cartoons when characters run away really quickly.

I’ll never forget when I said goodbye to her.

It was just a very sudden moment. As she walked away I realized I actually had a lot of things to say to her, but she was already down the hallway and in the elevator.

What was I doing?

It was then I realized I was alone, and that time was rushing by me incredibly fast.

But what gets me is that I never thought I’d get old, in a way. I must’ve thought time would stop after graduation or something. There’s no way I could ever get old.

But here I am coaching a team I used to wrestle for, and opening the back doors of my high school once again, with memories I didn’t know I had flooding back to me.

It’s like starting a trail through the mountains and looking back at how far you’ve come. You’re different than you were before.

The past likes to echo in your present. Not everything’s the same, but there’s just enough..
Your former coaches have a few extra wrinkles, and your school has a few more scuffs, and your gym has a few more banners in it.

Oddly enough I’m here in my hometown, chasing what I ran away from so quickly.

Time hurts. It sets crazy things in motion that don’t make any sense when they’re happening but make all kinds of sense when they’re finished.

And you know what means the most to me now? Simple conversations I have with my friends–especially old ones. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of who I used to be and I get my old self back for a few moments. But there’s something more.

I was certain of so many things before that ended up falling apart by the end. But then years later I’d get to revisit these relationships because time does heal a lot of things.

It makes me hopeful for the ones that are falling apart right now.

One day you will get to sit down with someone you never thought you’d talk to again and it’ll be like nothing ever happened and you’ll be young again for a few hours. To me the sweetest gift you could ever receive is to experience something you never thought you would experience again.

Losing all faith in something sucks. I don’t think anything hurts more. But it feels just as extreme in the other direction when an old friendship gets resurrected and everything is forgiven.

I’ve realized that most times people will forgive you. You just have to give time a little space. I was just too young to realize time was all I needed to wish for (again) what I was running away from after graduation.

People always ask me why I live in the past so much, and that’s because there’s a lot of joy and regret back there. People tell me to live in the present more–and they might be right.

Time. What a crazy thing it is. We battle with it every single day, dipping into memories and the future and right now all at the same time. But, to me, we need to give more credit to the past. Many of my current decisions rest on what happened in my past. We can’t escape who we used to be, or the hometown we grew up in. They aren’t going to take any banners down with your name on it. You can’t look at someone you used to love and not feel a thing.

There’s some things we aren’t in control of. We need to embrace who we used to be just as much as who we are right now and who we’re going to be in the future.

I tried to run away from my hometown, but there is no running away from it. And, in time, it ends up being where we want to return to the most.

Some Teenagers Recreated Martin Shkreli’s Crazy-Expensive Drug For $20

When Martin Shkreli, the former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, hiked up the price of a life-saving medication, one group of high school students saw an opportunity to do good.

Eight teenagers from Sydney Grammar School in Australia have collaborated with scientists from the University of Sydney to reproduce the active ingredient in Daraprim, a drug whose price tag swelled from $ 13.50 to $ 750 last year.

How much did it cost them? A mere $ 20.

Working in their chemistry lab, the students synthesized 3.7 grams of pyrimethamine, the active ingredient in Daraprim. That yield is worth about $ 110,000 in the U.S., according to the BBC.

Daraprim is an anti-parasitic medication used to treat malaria and other conditions involving compromised immune systems, such as AIDS. It is listed on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines.

The boys, all 17, called their project “Breaking Good.” Under the guidance of Dr. Alice Williamson and Associate Professor Matthew Todd, they worked with the Open Source Malaria consortium, which allowed scientists anywhere in the world to view their data and offer feedback.

“This Daraprim story has been ingrained in lots of people’s minds,” Dr. Williamson told CNN. “I thought ‘what if we can get these boys to show you can make it from cheap materials and that relatively inexperienced young scientists can make it?’”

“We knew it was a good story and the boys have done a good job,” she went on. “It’s really captured people’s imaginations. They made a very pure sample of the active ingredient.”

Turing Pharmaceuticals acquired the exclusive marketing rights to Daraprim in 2015 and quickly moved to raise the cost. Shkreli claimed that the decision was a strategy to make money from insurance companies and that the funds would be used to research better treatments.

The patents for Daraprim have expired, but Turing still has exclusive rights to sell the drug, meaning the boys from Sydney can’t simply open up a shop in the U.S. and sell their own, affordable version.

Shkreli ― who, whatever else you can say about him, isn’t afraid of bad P.R. ― belittled the students’ accomplishment on Twitter this week.

Shkreli was arrested in December on securities fraud charges.

The Big Oyster

The Big Oyster

Before New York City was the Big Apple, it could have been called the Big Oyster. Now award-winning author Mark Kurlansky tells the remarkable story of New York by following the trajectory of one of its most fascinating inhabitants-the oyster, whose influence on the great metropolis remains unparalleled. For centuries New York was famous for its oysters, which until the early 1900s played such a dominant a role in the city’s economy, gastronomy, and ecology that the abundant bivalves were Gotham’s most celebrated export, a staple food for the wealthy, the poor, and tourists alike, and the primary natural defense against pollution for the city’s congested waterways. Filled with cultural, historical, and culinary insight-along with historic recipes, maps, drawings, and photos-this dynamic narrative sweeps readers from the island hunting ground of the Lenape Indians to the death of the oyster beds and the rise of America’s environmentalist movement, from the oyster cellars of the rough-and-tumble Five Points slums to Manhattan’s Gilded Age dining chambers. Kurlansky brings characters vividly to life while recounting dramatic incidents that changed the course of New York history. Here are the stories behind Peter Stuyvesant’s peg leg and Robert Fulton’s “Folly”; the oyster merchant and pioneering African American leader Thomas Downing; the birth of the business lunch at Delmonico’s; early feminist Fanny Fern, one of the highest-paid newspaper writers in the city; even “Diamond” Jim Brady, who we discover was not the gourmand of popular legend. With The Big Oyster, Mark Kurlansky serves up history at its most engrossing, entertaining, and delicious. From the Hardcover edition.

Misunderstanding Of Electoral College Clouds Debate And Obstructs Reform

The results of the 2016 presidential election in which the electoral vote did not match the so-called popular vote has predictably resulted in demands for the abolition of the Electoral College and calls to aid and abet the duly elected electors into committing the criminal act of violating their pledge to the people who elected them.

In the aftermath of the 1960 election in which the democrat John Kennedy overwhelmingly won the electoral vote, but lost the popular vote, outraged and disgruntled Republicans pushed hard for abolishing the Electoral College. Likewise, it was outraged Democrats who supported the electoral loser and who demanded abolition of the Electoral College in 2000. Indeed, in the three elections in American history in which the electoral vote did not match the popular vote – 1888, 1960, and 2000 ⎯ support or opposition to our federal system of election enshrined in the U.S. Constitution has been based not on principle, but on partisan election outcomes. Over 700 aborted attempts over the last 200 years to undermine our federal system have failed abysmally once the disastrous consequences have been fully explained and appreciated.

Perhaps the most notorious myth is that the Founding Fathers envisioned electors as independent representatives free to cast their votes in any way they wish. Nothing could be further from the truth. As Madison explained to the Virginia ratifying convention, the president was to be chosen by “the people at large”, and later explained to the First Congress that the president was to be appointed “by the suffrages of three million people”. As Lucius Wilmerding’s massive study of the Electoral College noted in 1958, “it is the fashion nowadays (to assert that electors were to make the election according to their own will)… The Founding Fathers would have answered them, indeed did answer them, otherwise.”

Proponents for the view that electors were intended to exercise independent judgment often resort to citing Alexander Hamilton’s view in Federalist 68 that the Electors “should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the nation”. But even Hamilton clarified that statement by noting that “the people should operate in the choice of the (Electors)”. It should also be recalled that virtually all of Hamilton’s views on the presidency were rejected, including that the president should be elected for life, and that the states should be abolished in favor of arbitrarily drawn national districts.

In any case, this question of elector independence has been mooted by the decision of every state legislature since 1865 to delegate the responsibility of appointing electors to the people of the state. It is true that electors can violate both their oath and pledge by committing the criminal offense of failing to cast their vote in accordance with the pledge upon which they were elected, and while it has happened in a relative handful of instances (17 times out of 17,000 electoral votes case in the past 150 years) it is most rare and has never in the history of the U.S. ever affected an election outcome. When Lloyd Bailey cast his electoral vote for George Wallace rather than Richard Nixon in 1968, Congress challenged his vote as “not regularly given” in accordance with 3 United States Code 15. This is because the procedure for casting ballots has always been primarily ceremonial and mechanical. Thus when an appointed elector fails to appear at the appointed place time in December, due to sickness, in capacity, or death, it is not unusual to find someone in the hallway, even a passing janitor in one instance, to enter the voting room and cast the electoral vote in accordance with the slate elected by the people.

The system has worked like clockwork, every four years, since George Washington was elected President. And yet, in the aftermath of the 2016 November election, when an elector on the Democratic slate in Washington declared that he would never cast a vote for Hillary Clinton, it opened a Pandora’s Box, giving other Democrats the idea of trying to abet electors in states where the Republican slate was elected to commit the criminal act of violating their oath and pledge to the people.

But although electors are generally party stalwarts appointed on the basis of their loyalty to their party, and a faithless elector has never in the history of the Republic ever affected the outcome of an election, the time may have come for a responsible reform to the Electoral College – namely to dispense with human electors, and simply to automatically allocate the electoral votes based on the popular vote in each individual state. Unfortunately, populists determined to abolish the Electoral College have been resistant to such responsible reforms in hoping to set the stage for outright abolition.

As every eighth-grade civics student is aware, the Founding Fathers created both the Electoral College and the U.S. Senate as the basis for the Grand Compromise that served as the foundation for the Constitution and the union which guaranteed the reticent small states equal representation in the Senate and commensurate representation in the Electoral College. As Senator John F. Kennedy observed in fending off yet another Republican attempt to undermine federalism by tampering with the Electoral College prong of the Grand Compromise, such an attempt cannot be made without also tampering with or abolishing the other prong, namely the U.S. Senate – which would probably require a Constitutional Convention where all bets would be off.

One of the great puzzles is why opponents to the Electoral College focus on the fact that the Electoral College gives citizens of the small states a greater voice in the presidential election than citizens of the larger states (since small states are guaranteed two electors based on their representation in the Senate), when that argument would carry far greater weight in opposing the existence of the U.S. Senate where legislation is annually passed based on the votes of senators from the small states regardless of their population. Election of Presidents in the Electoral College without the popular vote, however, only occurs an average of once every 75 years, or about the same average as in parliamentary democracies such as the UK (where in 1974 Labor lost the popular vote but elected three more MP’s to parliament and formed the government). Those who remember the 2000 election may remember that many supporters of Ralph Nader did indeed call for the abolition of the U.S. Senate, on the same grounds as those who oppose the Electoral College today.

For the past 200 years, as our election system has become the envy of the world for its stability and peaceful transfer of power, both Congress and state legislatures have steadfastly defended the federalist basis of our Constitution, recognizing the true horrors of a so-called “popular vote election” in which recounts in most or all the states would be required in every close election (or about one-third of past American presidential elections). For those who remember the national trauma of Florida in 2000, one needs only imagine what a recount in all fifty states would entail, complete with lengthy court hearings and appeals in each state. One can also envision an election campaign in which candidates focus only on states and cities with massive populations (such as New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago) ignoring the sparsely populated hinterland. Perhaps the greatest protection provided by the Electoral College is to insure that no candidate can be elected without broad support across the country. (Imagine that in the 1950s an overwhelming popular vote in the deep south for a segregationist candidate managed to trump the rest of the country in popular votes despite the rest of the country being opposed.) With a popular vote election attracting a multitude of small parties, a candidate could win with a small percentage of the vote (as did Hitler in 1933 despite being opposed by a majority of voters).

Nor should the racial factor be ignored. As Vernon Jordan, President of the urban league, testified as the 1979 congressional Hearings initiated by Republicans to abolish the Electoral College, “(T)ake away the Electoral College and the importance of being black melts away. Blacks, instead of being crucial to victory in major states, simply become 10% of the total electorate with reduced impact. “

Of course, Republicans changed their tune after the 2000 election, just as Democrats who felt secure behind their “blue wall” of big states with a huge number of electors will doubtless change their tune in the aftermath of the 2016 election and support Donald Trump’s call to undermine federalism by abolishing the Electoral College.

Probably the most dangerous course for opponents of federalism is to support a scheme (called NPV) by a California millionaire to do an end run around the Constitution by enticing states to enter into a conspiracy with other states totaling 270 electoral votes to ignore the will of the people of their own state and vote for the “popular” vote winner. Aside from being in violation of the compact clause of the constitution, such a scheme simply assumes that a popular vote winner can simply be calculated by adding up the vote totals of each individual state. Hardly. It may be recalled that in 1960, the newspapers calculated the popular vote winner by simply tallying the popular votes for the electoral slate in each state, thereby concluding that Kennedy won the popular vote. The Congressional Quarterly, on the other hand, determined that that only 5/16 of the popular votes for the Democratic electoral slate in Alabama should be allocated to Kennedy since five of the sixteen electors on the Democratic slate were pledged to Senator Byrd, thereby concluding that included Nixon won the popular vote by over 58,000 votes. So which tally was correct? The NPV answer is simply along the lines of “the courts will decide”.

For those that trust the courts more than the people, and are willing to throw the nation into constitutional crisis every third election, the so-called “popular” vote scheme will doubtless continue to seduce whoever loses the electoral vote to a popular vote winner.

You Are Entirely Up To You

These times are quite fraught with desperation for all of us. We look outside ourselves for leadership; we look outside for community. When the truth is we are seeking something that is already within us.

It’s in that precious moment that we actually have a clear understanding. Our uniqueness of being is where we truly exist. People naturally gravitate to those who believe in themselves, à la Oprah, Beyoncé, Steve Jobs.

It starts with you liking one thing about yourself. Be it singing, dancing, styling, skill with numbers, reliability – trust this as your core.

We all come in with an authentic gift. We often dismiss opportunities to grow and welcome development. And when all is said and done, if we don’t get what we want, we feel short changed.

When we are confused, we seek advice. Somebody we know tells us how they think we should what we want. Ironically, it’s usually their way. We follow suit, all the while we are aware that something’s off. Listen to your gut, trust your intuition. Something’s off because you are doing it the way somebody else is doing it, not your way. It can’t work if you are not being your authentic you.

There is no greater time than right now to seek that passion, or be open to new discoveries. Follow your gut. Don’t give up on your dream; simplify and keep modifying. Keep your day job and learn to invest both your dream and your day-to-day life.

The minute anybody else attempts to undermine you, don’t doubt your core for a moment. Take that as your valuable warning. If we don’t contribute one authentic thing about ourselves, then others won’t provide anything either. In other words, don’t be clueless, be smart!

I’m a great believer of jumping in, but make sure to find the right expert. Treat your dream like you are already paid for the job. Do your homework. Email, contact, communicate – research before you dive head over feet. Be clear what makes you happy, more authentic. Focus on that one attribute that is yours. No one can take it from you.

Even the most ardent new age seekers among us feel that we’ve been sold a lot of airy-fairy nonsense, when what we’re all looking for is something reliable and actual: a higher goal that comes to life in this world, not the next.

Most of us cry out to a benevolent force sooner or later. Why am I here? And when we hear silence, we panic. We grab the first thought and wing it, and hope it goes viral.

Pinning our hopes with a fixed dream is disastrous. Be open to modification. Because the dream has to start from somewhere, it never comes in whole. It might not look exactly like you thought it would. Go with the flow.

A way to stimulate your transformation is by making a commitment: Try investing four hours a month to your quest.

One thing you can you do daily is to check in. Take a private moment and visualize yourself in action, doing the thing you love. Make it as real as possible. See yourself with the thing you most want, and know that you can have it. Every time we internally see our exalted selves in motion, it projects out to everyone we meet and attracts to us a world of opportunity.

As Oprah so eloquently expressed, “Change your thoughts and change your world.”

29 Joy-Filled Photos Of Kids Adopted From Foster Care

There are over 100,000 kids in the U.S. foster care system awaiting adoption. That’s why organizations like Together We Rise work to promote foster care adoption and support families in the midst of the process.

“Raising awareness about adoption from foster care is so important because of the many myths the majority of people believe to be true,” Together We Rise executive director, Gianna Dahlia, told The Huffington Post.

“People believe that these may be ‘bad’ kids with many problems or that they can’t afford it,” she added. “The truth is adoption from foster care costs close to nothing, but more importantly, these children are just children who want and deserve loving homes.”

For the past three years, Together We Rise has been celebrating adoption by sharing joyful photos of foster kids on the day they officially became part of their “forever families.” The adoption day photos are some of their most popular Instagram posts.

Dahlia said she believes people love the photos so much because they offer a feeling of hope and accomplishment.

“The road to adoption can be hard, but these families prove that in the end, when a child gets to be a part of a forever family, how special that moment is,” Dahlia said. “Seeing the joy on a child’s face that they get to be loved and supported for the rest of their life is priceless. We can’t really think of a better feeling than knowing you belong and are loved.”

Sharing adoption day photos is just one of many uplifting initiatives for Together We Rise, which aims to improve the lives of foster kids by offering resources like school supplies, bicycles, educational programs and even college scholarships. The nonprofit also educates volunteers about the issues surrounding the foster care system and provides information to foster parents about the adoption process.

“It is important not only to raise awareness for adoption from foster care but that we celebrate the families who are working hard every day to complete their forever families,” said Dahlia, adding that National Adoption Month in November is a great opportunity to do so.

“We need to show these families that their community supports them and that the journey is worth it,” she added. “National Adoption Month is about tackling negative stereotypes and empowering more families in hopes for a better future for children still waiting for their forever family. “

Why Was Bernie Sanders So Successful in Activating Young Voters?

What made the Bernie Sanders campaign so successful in activating young voters? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Becky Bond and Zack Exley, Former Senior Advisers to Bernie Sanders (2016); co-authors of Rules for Revolutionaries, on Quora.

The Bernie campaign’s two biggest assets were Bernie’s message and Bernie’s authenticity as a messenger.

Young people were electrified by Bernie’s political analysis and believed that he meant what he said because he had been saying it for decades. When Bernie asked for a political revolution they rose up to join it.

In my experiences on the campaign trail working with young people as staffers and volunteers, I came to be in awe of the younger cohort of millennials — primarily folks who are aged 16-26.

The Clinton campaign pegged these younger millennials as naive takers who only wanted free stuff and were responding primarily to Bernie’s support for free tuition at public colleges and universities. But if they’d spent more time with young people they would have understood that young people cared about all the issues because they are a truly intersectional generation.

Zack and I talk about this in the chapter of our Rules for Revolutionaries: How Big Organizing Can Change Everything that’s titled “There is No Such Thing as a Single-Issue Revolution.” Everywhere we went, young people flocked to the campaign because Bernie was talking about all the issues they cared about. Consistently we found that climate and racial justice were at the top of their agenda. They also cared deeply about getting big money out of politics and immigration reform. Free tuition at public colleges and universities was usually the fourth or fifth issue they mentioned.

What the Clinton campaign missed but we understood right from the beginning on the Bernie campaign was that the younger millennials are an intelligent, diverse, digitally enabled, teamwork-focused, and solutions-oriented generation. They are searching for leaders, strategies and tactics to address the urgent crises they are inheriting from an older generation.

These under-26 millennials (and some of the older ones, too) are going through a nuanced and intense political awakening that questions current conventional wisdom. They recognize how the dominant orthodoxy of incremental approaches to change fall far short of the solutions that are needed. And they are willing to engage in the work necessary to fight for the change we need even if the odds of winning aren’t great.

Going forward, I believe that young people are going to continue the work they started with the Bernie Sanders campaign. They are the vanguard that’s going to go after the establishment and change things — not from ignorance or idealism, but from a place of intelligence, urgency, nuance and a clear recognition that we are all in this together and all struggles are connected.

The sooner these young leaders who are more radical and diverse than the baby boomers or GenXers replace the current political establishment, the better. If the election had been decided only by votes by young people I would have been much happier with the result. And helping the young Bernie Sanders voters rise to power is one of the hopeful things we can focus on in these dark days.

What We Misunderstand About What Motivates Us

What things should people better understand about motivation? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Dan Ariely, Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, on Quora.

As people, we misunderstand a lot about what motivates us.

One of the main things that people don’t understand about motivation is the pleasure principle. People think that pursuing pleasure is what motivation is all about, but the reality is that motivation is often counter to pursuing pleasure. Pleasure is about sitting on the beach and drinking a mojito, pleasure is about watching a sitcom but in fact most of the things that give us deep motivation are things that are difficult and complex and sometimes even painful.

Think about things like writing a book or starting a company, having kids or running a marathon. If you take running marathons for example and you look at the people who are running marathons they don’t look happy at all, it looks like there is zero amount of pleasure in what they are doing. If you came from outer space and were wondering about this phenomenon of running a marathon you would probably conclude that these people have been punished and this is the way they are paying their debts to society.

Marathons, writing books, starting business are things that give us deep pleasure but this pleasure is not measured in the momentary pleasure like having a drink or watching a sitcom. It’s a very different pleasure.

The first point is when we think about motivation we think about short term pleasure but motivation is actually about long term meaning and the pleasure we get from long term meaning is a very different kind of pleasure.

The second main thing that we don’t understand about motivation is that motivation is not just about money. When people think about motivation they have an equation that says motivation = pay, but the reality is that motivation has lots of different elements. We care about meaning, competition, a sense of achievement, progress, the welfare of others and all of these other elements in the motivation equation is not what comes to mind most easily.

For example, consider this experiment. In this experiment we asked people to build Lego Bionicles and we paid people to do so. We paid people a diminishing wage, more for the first, less for the second, etc. etc. until some point they stopped building. In one condition we asked them if they would like to build one and they said yes and when they finished we asked if they would like to build another for less if they said yes, they built and so and so forth until they stopped. This was the Meaningful condition. In another version which we called the Sisyphus we did the same thing but when people agreed they wanted to build a second Bionicle as they started we took the first Bionicle apart and put the pieces back in the box. When they finished the second one and we asked if they wanted to build a third one we gave them the one that they had built and we disassembled to reassemble and so on and so forth. In this condition, people build and rebuild the same two bionicles over and over. So what happened? In both conditions people built Bionicles but in the Meaningful condition people built much longer and more Bionicles and they were willing to work for less money. In the Sisyphus condition their motivation was incredibly cut. The amount of money they were making was the same but they were seeing their work destroyed in front of their eyes which destroyed their motivation.

I have described some of this research about the meaning of work in a TED Talk I gave which you can find here, and there is also more information about this in my most recent book called Payoff.

PSA: Pregnant Women Should Still Get Flu Shots

During follow-up periods ranging from two to 15 years, 1.6 percent of the children were diagnosed with ASD. Among the mothers of that 1.6 percent, fewer than 1 percent had the flu while pregnant, and about 23 percent had gotten a flu vaccine.

Neither influenza infection nor vaccination during pregnancy were tied to children being diagnosed with ASD, the research team reports in JAMA Pediatrics.

“Our data showed pretty convincingly that there was no association with influenza at any time during pregnancy and autism in the child,” said senior author Lisa Croen, of Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland.

“We’re not recommending that any changes be made to the vaccination policy,” Croen told Reuters Health. “We are encouraging women to get vaccinated while pregnant.”

Previous studies looking at possible links between influenza during pregnancy and ASD had produced mixed results, Croen and her colleagues note in JAMA Pediatrics. And until now, they add, no studies had looked for links between ASD and flu vaccines, which are recommended for pregnant women.

People with ASD may have social, communication and behavioral challenges that may cause them to interact, learn and behave in ways different from most people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A second study published in the same journal also found no link between vaccines against influenza A (H1N1) – sometimes referred to as swine flue – during pregnancy in 2009-2010 and complications later in life for over 60,000 Danish children.

The results support the overall safety profile of the vaccine, write the researchers, who were led by Anders Hviid, of the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen. They support the World Health Organization’s recommendations that pregnant women should get a flu vaccine.

While the CDC recommends that everyone over 6 months of age receive a flu vaccine, it’s especially important for some people – including pregnant women – who are more likely to experience complications from the virus.

“The flu in pregnancy is dangerous,” said Dr. Loralei Thornburg, a high-risk pregnancy expert at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. “We know that women who have the flu do much worse and we know their babies do worse.”

Pregnant women with influenza may be at an increased risk for premature labor and delivery, according to the CDC. There is also a greater risk of birth defects in their babies.

“There have been a lot of fears about vaccines, but the data suggest they are effective and don’t increase the risk of autism and other perinatal complications,” said Thornburg, who was not involved with the new studies. “The benefits strongly outweigh and risks or theoretical risks that we’ve seen.”

Kellyanne Conway: Trump Is Receiving Intelligence Info ‘From A Number Of Sources’

Kellyanne Conway, former campaign manager to President-elect Donald Trump, refused to say Sunday if Trump is turning away daily intelligence briefings, claiming that he is receiving information “from a number of sources.”

Last week, the Washington Post reported that Trump has only received two intelligence briefings in the two and a half weeks since his election. His predecessors typically received the briefings on a daily basis.

When asked about the report on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Conway assured the host that Trump was receiving adequate information “from a number of sources,” including phone calls with world leaders, which are usually initiated through the State Department and not directly from the president-elect.

“He is receiving classified intelligence briefings, and the president-elect is also receiving information through his personal and on the phone meetings with over what’s now 41 world leaders, in addition to meeting with 60 men and women who could serve in his government but certainly without the promise of any formal position,” Conway said.

She would not say if Trump has been turning down the classified briefings.

“I can’t discuss that publicly,” she said. “What I can tell you is that he is the most engaged individual I’ve ever met and brilliant to boot, and he is certainly availing himself of the information as provided to him from a number of sources, including those intelligence briefings.”

According to Trump’s transition team, Trump has spoken to a number of world leaders, including taking congratulatory phone calls on Election Day. Trump’s team did not reach out to the State Department until the Thursday after the election

Traditionally, the State Department coordinates the president-elect’s contact with world leaders and provides briefings before he speaks to them.

Trump’s eschewing of protocol is a concerning sign, given his utter lack of foreign policy knowledge and experience. His foreign policy proposals during the campaign included a “secret plan to fight ISIS” and an insistence that the U.S. should “take the oil” in Iraq.

In addition, Trump’s meetings with foreign leaders have come under close scrutiny for conflicts of interest between his duties as president-elect and his business enterprises. His first in-person meeting with a foreign leader, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, raised suspicions because Trump’s daughter Ivanka, who is both an executive vice president at the Trump Organization and a member of his transition team, attended. According to the company’s website, among her “primary focuses has been to bring the Trump Hotel brand to global markets.”

Trump and his children met with Indian business partners just a week after the election. Trump is involved in several real estate deals in India. He also praised his Turkish business partner during a phone call with the country’s president. And he reportedly asked Argentina’s president for help with securing building permits for a planned office tower in Buenos Aires during a congratulatory phone call. Both Trump and Argentine President Mauricio Macri denied the allegations.

Body Image vs. Self Image: A Self Discovery?

Body Image vs. Self Image; A Self Discovery?
Robert Reames, CSCS, CN, CES/FNS/CPT www.facebook.com/robertreameslive

If you’ve ever looked at celebrities in the media and thought to yourself; “does she really look like that? Is he that perfect?” The answer to these and other questions like this; highly doubtful. I think it started back as early as the 40′s and 50′s the onset of the “glamour” days in Hollywood. The “looks” of the media stars seem to set the tone and the quest for the flawless. Sometimes even when a healthy weight is achieved there are still parts of our bodies that in our thoughts don’t quite meet a level of beauty that the media and the fitness industry somehow has convinced us that we need to reach. As technology continues to develop so has the ability to enhance looks of perfection. In reality these folks you see in the media are just like you and me. Airbrushing, great lighting, make-up, photo shopping, injections, plastic surgery, extreme dieting prior to a movie, TV or photo shoot and other techniques are all used to create these illusions. Extreme measures many times are taken to create “the look.” This is the “glamour machine” in action. Then most likely, after the production or photo shoot because they’re human just like you and me it’s beer and pizza and or whatever the individual preference of indulgence may be.

That said, let’s talk about your body image and how this image has a huge impact on your self image. I mention the above because this concept tends to drive our thoughts, inner dialogue and self perception. These images often create unachievable expectations and sometimes can cause one to say; “why even bother?” The tendency is not to acknowledge your own individual progress or personal best because it’s not perfection. It’s important to shift the focus towards your individual goals and needs and what you can accomplish. And shift away from what is presented by the Hollywood glamour machine, the cover of the fitness magazine at the newstand or that skinny person down the street who can eat everything in site and not gain a pound. Own the fact that you are a unique being. Achieve your own personal best and not someone else’s. Your goals are real and valid. Own your own unique gifts and lead with these gifts; these talents. Be that electric person in the room who just knows who you are, is grounded and passionate about what you bring to this life. Think about it; there’s nothing more attractive than that. You’re not a failure or a bad person (self image) because you’ve gained a few pounds. (body image) The fitness industry contributes to this as well. This focus on external body perfection has always been a peeve I have with the business and I continue to work hard to shift this focus. The emphasis tends to be on the external while ignoring internal benefits and a return to health. Not that we all don’t want to look our best…that’s a huge benefit of taking great care of ourselves. However, getting optimum numbers on our yearly physicals, quality longevity, exuding a healthy glow, having mobility to play with our kids and grandkids, climb stairs, being able to mow the lawn, shovel the snow or haul the groceries in at night needs more attention. Obesity with adults and kids and healthcare costs in America are all dramatically rising every year. So the approach of the sheened up body under perfect lighting after fasting for two days is clearly not working. It never worked for any long term. www.twitter.com/Robertreames

So what is body image? It’s a reaction you have within in response to what you see in the mirror or a picture. This encompasses the perceptions and things you tell yourself about how you feel about your body. You’re too fat, too thin, ugly, old, bloated and tired, average, amazing, fit, beautiful or whatever you tell yourself based on what you see. This is your body image. Self image is how we feel about ourselves as people, as human beings. It’s who you are as a person from the soul; self esteem. If you’re a good giving and caring person, a good parent, a great friend or sibling. Body image and self image for most everyone go hand in hand. You may have great body image but a poor self image; poor self esteem. Or you may have the opposite. Ultimately you want a healthy and positive image of both. If you’ve looked in the mirror and punished yourself for what you see based on the fact that you’ve let your health go and gained weight you get what I’m talking about here. Because you’ve let yourself go (body image) …now you’ve deemed yourself as a total failure in life. (self image) The fat on your hips and thighs, your flabby midsection, the chubby arms…these are not who you are. (body image) And because you may have let yourself go for whatever reason, you’re still the same loving giving person that you’ve always been. (self image) Your friends, family and loved ones around you know and embrace this as well. I’ve said before that being overweight for the most part is always the result of something much bigger; an injury that caused you to become inactive, a traumatic event, your need to be protected by the fat suit, depression, loss, a bad relationship or any other reason in life that took you in the wrong direction health wise. These events and the current result of being overweight again are not who you are. No need to punish yourself. And newsflash; If you’re overweight you have the power within you to do something about it.

Your body image now may not be so much that you hate yourself and where you are now. But more a feeling of disappointment that you’ve not kept the standards that you really do have for yourself. You’ve let yourself go. Truth is if these standards didn’t exist in you, your poor body image due to being fat and out of shape wouldn’t bother you at all. You’d be fat, bloated, happy and loving life. Tap your resources and put this in motion. Raise your standards, alter your perspective and move forward one step at a time but continue the move forward. Focus on your goals, your passions, your inner goodness and not the illusion of the media machine.

Avoid a “diet” as these are temporary plans that yield temporary results. If you’re not going to commit to a level that you can commit to or do it right you’re better off to stay overweight until you decide that you’re ready to do it. Then make the changes necessary to embrace a lifestyle that will get you to your goal weight and keep you there. Ultimately you to learn what I call the “skill of weight control.” Determine a weight that you realistically can attain and sustain and work with that. And this perspective will continue to have ebbs and flows. That’s okay. Just stay conscious and real about what you are willing to do.

It’s keeping standards high for the choices you make on a daily basis. Heck yes you’ll look good…absolutely! Enjoy and flaunt this great pay-off. But go even deeper on this for yourself, your health and how you’ll feel. Your energy levels will soar and there is so much out there in life that awaits you. At your physical the doctor hands you tremendous results. If you have kids, nieces or nephews you’re going to turn around one day and they’ll have kids. You want to begin now to enjoy these times later. And yes; you’ll be able to wear those benchmark jeans! Don’t wait for tragedy to wake you up forcing you to play catch up. Get off the couch and take action now. You don’t have to be perfect just be you. “Acknowledge all progress” as I say. You’ll feel better and who doesn’t want that? Love your body and who you are. Get in the game and enjoy the journey!

Reddit CEO Admits To Editing User Comments That Criticized Him

Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman is under fire after admitting that he personally edited comments users posted about him.

Huffman, whose username is u/spez, apologized Thursday in the Donald Trump fan subreddit r/the_donald for editing comments that were critical of him. Huffman said that, in an unspecified number of user comments, he replaced references to “u/spez” with the usernames of moderators for r/the_donald.

“Pizzagate” refers to a debunked conspiracy theory claiming, among other things, that Hillary Clinton ran a child-trafficking ring out of a Washington, D.C., pizza place. (The pizza place is real; the rest of the story is fabricated.) Reddit shut down r/pizzagate, a forum devoted to discussing the conspiracy, earlier this week. Some users took to r/the_donald to express their displeasure with the decision and, by extension, with Huffman.

The CEO’s confession means that when some users made disparaging comments about him using his username, he replaced his username with one belonging to a moderator for the group. For example, an archived version of the site shows that a comment saying “FUCK /u/spez” was changed to “FUCK /u/Trumpshaker.”

According to Huffman’s post, the change only lasted for an hour and all changes have since been corrected.

Unsurprisingly, many Reddit users were not happy to learn that the company’s CEO was personally editing their content. Some called it unethical and said that it could put the integrity of any content posted to Reddit into question.

Legal site Associate’s Mind speculated that Huffman’s actions could create serious repercussions in terms of how Reddit is treated under the law. Potentially, the site argued, Huffman opened Reddit to liability by transforming the site from an intermediary that hosts third-party comments to a site whose owners exercise editorial control over those comments. The author used the example of a college billboard where students can post whatever they want as an analogy:

Think of it like a billboard at a local college. The college puts a billboard up for students to make community announcements. The college never uses it. Then Adam writes something defamatory and false about Betsy. Betsy is upset and sues Adam and the college. A court would allow the lawsuit to proceed against Adam, but not the college because they just provided the platform and had nothing to do with the comments.

But the college would be liable if college staff erased Adam’s comments and changed them to something else. If Adam was originally saying something mild about Betsy, and instead a college staffer changed it to something defamatory, that’s not on Adam, it’s on the college.

Reddit did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Huffington Post.

WATCH: Doubting You Deserve Better

It’s very difficult for us to manifest into our lives more than we believe we deserve. What do you unconsciously believe you deserve? Look around at what you’ve got at present. If you’d like things to get better, allow yourself to know the truth – you deserve better. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

6 Toxic Thoughts Smart People Quarantine

2016-11-25-1480102808-5481960-6ToxicThoughtsSuccessfulPeopleQuarantineHP

Your self-talk (the thoughts you have about your feelings) can make or break you. When you make a mistake, they either magnify the negativity or help you turn that misstep into something productive.

Negative self-talk is unrealistic, unnecessary, and self-defeating. It sends you into a downward emotional spiral that is difficult to pull out of.

All self-talk is driven by important beliefs that you hold about yourself. It plays an understated but powerful role in success because it can both spur you forward to achieve your goals and hold you back.

“He who believes he can and he who believes he cannot are both correct.” -Henry Ford

TalentSmart has tested the emotional intelligence (EQ) of more than a million people and found that 90% of top performers are high in emotional intelligence. These successful, high EQ individuals possess an important skill⎯the ability to recognize and control negative self-talk so that it doesn’t prevent them from reaching their full potential.

These successful people earn an average of $ 28,000 more annually than their low EQ peers, get promoted more often, and receive higher marks on performance evaluations. The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ adds $ 1,300 to an annual salary.

When it comes to self-talk, we’ve discovered some common thoughts that hold people back more than any others. Be mindful of your tendencies to succumb to these thoughts, so that they don’t derail your career:

1. Perfection equals success. Human beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, you’re always left with a nagging sense of failure, and end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish, instead of enjoying what you were able to achieve.

2. My destiny is predetermined. Far too many people succumb to the highly irrational idea that they are destined to succeed or fail. Make no mistake about it, your destiny is in your own hands, and blaming multiple successes or failures on forces beyond your control is nothing more than a cop out. Sometimes life will deal you difficult cards to play, and others times you’ll be holding aces. Your willingness to give your all in playing any hand you’re holding determines your ultimate success or failure in life.

3. I “always” or “never” do that. There isn’t anything in life that you always or never do. You may do something a lot or not do something enough, but framing your behavior in terms of “always” or “never” is a form of self-pity. It makes you believe that you have no control of yourself and will never change. Don’t succumb to it.

4. I succeed when others approve of me. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain⎯you’re never as good or bad as they say you are. It’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, but you can take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what people think about you, your self-worth comes only from within.

5. My past equals my future. Repeated failures can erode your self-confidence and make it hard to believe you’ll achieve a better outcome in the future. Most of the time, these failures result from taking risks and trying to achieve something that isn’t easy. Just remember that success lies in your ability to rise in the face of failure. Anything worth achieving is going to require you to take some risks, and you can’t allow failure to stop you from believing in your ability to succeed.

6. My emotions equal my reality. If you’ve read Emotional Intelligence 2.0, you know how to take an objective look at your feelings and separate fact from fiction. If not, you might want to read it. Otherwise, your emotions will continue to skew your sense of reality, making you vulnerable to the negative self-talk that can hold you back from achieving your full potential.

Bringing It All Together

I hope these lessons are as useful to you as they have been to me over the years. As I write them, I’m reminded of their power and my desire to use them every day.

What other toxic thoughts do successful people quarantine? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Trump Puts Journalism In The Crosshairs

2016-11-25-1480099266-3156784-A_stack_of_newspapers.jpg

Since he started his run for the White House, everyone has made the mistake of under estimating Donald Trump. They still do. This may be his most powerful asset.

One by one, he picked off each of his rival Republican candidates for the nomination, not by presenting a better plan or a better argument, but rather by belittling them and humiliating them in the public eye. Low energy Jeb; Little Marco; Lyin’ Ted Cruz. It was unrelenting, and it was also devoid of content. And it worked.

These were not intellectual arguments, they were a constant drip of poison that was not about public discourse of policy, but rather about simply devaluing his competition in the eyes of the voters until they were mere shadows of themselves. Their standing with the ‘audience’ was shattered, and yet they had done nothing. But they were dead. Jokes. No longer to be taken seriously.

This was not politics as usual. In fact, it was not politics at all. Donald Trump is not a politician. He is the product of reality TV. And this is very much how it works on reality TV. On “Survivor” or “The Apprentice” or “Big Brother,” contestants are eliminated, one by one until there is only one winner left standing. They are not eliminated based on their character or their abilities. More often than not, they are eliminated because people no longer ‘like’ them.

Being a master of reality TV and having cut his teeth there, this is what Donald understands so well, (and what none of the other “contestants” understood at all). It was never about policy or issues or “the wall” or “Muslims” or his attitude to women. It was all about denigrating his opponents in the eyes of the voter audience.

And it worked. One by one, the opposition was whittled down by making them personally ridiculous. Who could take “Low Energy Jeb” seriously, no matter what he said? Or “little Marco?” When it came to the final round, it was a never ending attack on “Crooked Hillary,” the last contestant standing. She never stood a chance. Her wonkish policies were immaterial. He denigrated her in the eyes of the audience until she simply became untenable. A joke in the eyes of a majority of the voting audience. Only one winner was left standing. Donald Trump, master of reality TV techniques.

Now, he is the President, or he is going to be come January 20th. And now, there is only one more contestant he has to deal with — the press. The only barrier between him and a total “win” is journalism. The traditionalist Republicans in the House and Senate have already caved, and he hasn’t even started yet. But the press, that’s another story.

So what will he do?

He will do what he has done so far. He will denigrate and humiliate the press at every turn until they also lose credibility with “the audience.” They may go on to say whatever they wish, do whatever ‘investigations’ they want, reveal one scandal after another. It won’t matter. Like ‘Low Energy Jeb’, no one will take them seriously anymore. He won’t quash the free press, he will simply denigrate it and degrade it in the eyes of the public until what they say means nothing to anyone. If you want to know the truth, go to Breitbart, he will respond. “Ask Hannity,” he will respond, as he did during the primaries.

Hannity has already drawn his line in the sand, as noted yesterday in The Huffington Post

“Maybe Donald Trump should rethink how he deals with media,” he said. “Why should CNN have a seat in the White House press room? Why should NBC have a seat there? Why should The New York Times have a seat there, or Politico? They all think they’re journalists, they’re all full of crap, and they’ve all been exposed.”

The free press is the last firewall against an authoritarian Trump regime, and it is already under attack.

Where is all this headed? Back to reality TV, his model for government. In every reality TV series (and I have produced hundreds of hours of them), there is always a “crisis” that turns the show. At some point in the next year or two, we are going to have some kind of national “crisis.” A terrorist incident, perhaps. Muslim? Could be? And what will be the response? A declared “state of emergency”? A suspension of civil liberties? Could be.

You heard it here first, you know, from the lying press.

Screaming From The Golden Cage: Heal Anxiety, Depression And Addiction By Embracing The Truth

Dr. Bruce Alexander, professor emeritus of psychology, performed an experiment in the 1970s. His team built two cages for laboratory rats. In one cage a rat was alone and isolated. It couldn’t see or touch other rats and had nothing to do. In the other cage called Rat Park, they had good food and lots of cheese, running wheels for exercise, colored balls, platforms for climbing, tin cans for hiding and many other rats to play and have sex with.

Rat Park soon filled with babies. In both cases, rats had access to two drinking bottles: a bottle of water and a bottle of water with morphine. Morphine is pure heroin. Unlike street heroin that contains brick dust, bleach powder, cement and other contaminants, morphine is much stronger. At the end of each day, researchers measured the two bottles to see if rats preferred the pure water or the heroin water.

The rats in solitary confinement almost always chose the heroin water. They always became addicted and killed themselves. In Rat Park, they almost never drank heroin water. None become addicted or overdosed. Rats are social, sexual and working beings just like humans.

It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble.
Is what you know for sure that just ain’t so.
- Mark Twain

People who become addicted don’t have to be put in cages. It’s enough for them only to feel caged-in a job, in a relationship, in a family or in a country. They will drink or take drugs to cope with the situation. Prof. Alexander concluded that addiction is an escape from an environment where human connection is impossible. Alcohol or drug dependence is the consequence of not bearing being present in your own life.

While prof. Alexander was studying the effects of the social environment on rats, the Vietnam war was unfolding on the other side of the world. According to a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, 20 percent of the American soldiers fighting in Vietnam were addicted to heroin. The public in the United States was terrified that hundreds of thousands of veterans will become junkies but this never happened.

When they returned home, 95 percent of the addicted soldiers stopped using heroin within one year. Another study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry revealed that addicts who didn’t receive any treatment were as likely to stop using drugs as those who went rehab. They changed the environment, they changed their behaviors.

Johann Hari, in his book Chasing the Scream, wrote that rats in solitary confinement and soldiers in Vietnam didn’t become victims of the drug but of their environment. Addiction was their way of coping with “being dislocated from everything that gave them meaning,” wrote Hari. When you feel caged, and your world becomes intolerable, you leave physically if you can or mentally if you cannot. When soldiers returned home to a meaningful life, they gave up the drugs.

People who live in a social environment where they can connect with others and bond with their work will not become addicted even if they have alcohol and drugs around them because they want to be present in their lives. But if you feel trapped or caged in a situation, a job or a relationship, if you cannot bond because of you in life in a social context that punishes you for expressing who you are and for living your truth, you will find refuge in whatever takes your pain away. Prof. Peter Cohen, director of the Center for Drug Research at the University of Amsterdam, suggested that we need to replace the word addiction with the word bonding. We have a fundamental human need to bond with our work and with others, but we can only bond if we live our truth and open our hearts.

Do You Feel Caged?

You don’t need to live in a cage, or to go to war to feel caged, and not be able to find meaning in life. Your own mind, your unconscious beliefs, a toxic friendship, a job environment or family relationship can choke your will to express who you are with the same tragic effects. The heart’s calling – your will – is only love and cannot be anything else. Your will flows through your heart and pulls you towards what you most value in life.

When you embrace it, you find meaning. When you block it, you find pain. Love is the force that pulls us to follow our dreams and step into the unknown, to reveal and express who we are, to explore, to discover, to create and to bond. Whenever your behaviors conflict your will, whenever you think and act against love, tension grows within yourself. Strain turns into pain. Anger, anxiety, and depression follow.

The Importance of Living Your Truth

I have a friend who is project manager for a financial corporation, but her dream is to open a restaurant. Her will is to start this new business. Every time she thinks about her calling her heart fills with joy. She feels love. But immediately her mind drags her in the opposite direction: ‘What if it doesn’t work?’ ‘I am in my thirties, and I have a child. ‘What will my parents say about me quitting my job after they supported me through college?’

She then acts as she thinks she should and stays in her job without actually willing to do so. Everyone envies her. She earns a great paycheck, has a loving husband and a beautiful child, and she’s sinking into depression. She feels even worse when she looks around her because apparently, she has no reason to feel depressed. The truth is she has the only reason to feel depressed: her heart is screaming from a golden cage, and she doesn’t listen.

Finding Peace of Mind and Joy with Truth

The greater is the gap between what love calls you to do and what you actually do, the deeper the depression you can fall into. The way to find joy is to leave the cage, not to make it prettier. Why do you think the waiting rooms of psychologists and psychiatrists are filled with successful people who realized after twenty or thirty years of work that money, a career and a house in the suburbs do not bring peace of mind and joy of heart?

They keep hoping that by changing the external conditions of their lives – earn more money, be in a better physical shape, have another partner or travel more – will change how they feel. It never works because the emptiness is not around them. The emptiness is within them. And the only way to come back to life is to acknowledge that little voice rising from your heart and begging you to return to love, to return to truth.

Hold The Gravy! These Are The Foods Not Allowed In Carry-On Luggage

Grandma’s famous cranberry sauce may have to find a new way to fly.

The Transportation Security Administration has released a list in time for the holidays of food items that are prohibited in carry-on luggage.

The good news: Turkey is allowed, as well as fresh whole fruit, cakes and pies — though they may require additional screening, the TSA notes.

Other items that are in liquid form — including gravy, mashed potatoes, jams and jellies, salsa and maple syrup — will either have to be checked in, shipped, or adhere to the 3.4 oz. (100 ml) rule to remain in your carry-on luggage.

One good tip is that if the item can spill, be sprayed, spread, dumped, poured or pumped, it should adhere to the TSA’s liquid rules.

Check out the list below of prohibited items. If you have an item that’s not on the list and are unsure, you can contact the @AskTSA team on Twitter, Facebook messenger or by calling 866-289-9673. You can even send them a photo of the item in question.

Happy travels!
