Women Leaders Turning Passion Into Action

I had the privilege of sharing these leadership lessons at the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Women’s Network 12th Biennial Convention in Vancouver BC Canada.

Turning passion into action is more than a catchphrase – it is the cause of our lives. That is why we are here together – and why I thank Rhonda Nelson and the United Food and Commercial Workers union for inviting me to join you here at the UFCW Women’s Network convention. My thanks to each of you and my prayers to everyone affected by the Canadian wildfires. Your response as a community is awe inspiring. We are all in this together.

We are here together today because fearless women before us had the courage and conviction to stand up and take their rightful places in leadership. And for many women, turning passion into action began in early childhood.

My political activism began in the stroller. In the late 1960s my mom navigated a stroller with 2 of my sisters and me thought the streets of New York City. Years later when writing my first Campaign Boot Camp book I asked her “Mom how did you get past all those ‘no solicitation’ signs in the apartment buildings?” “I was a mom with 3 babies in a stroller” she replied, “who was going to stop me?”

Now we could never have imagined then that 30 years later, elected from 3000 miles away in California, with the support of UFCW and the union movement, our mom Nancy Pelosi would become the first woman Speaker in the United States House of Representatives.

But politics isn’t about the great leap to power – it’s about that the steps that you take with your neighbors and your kids for your values, answering a call to service and turning passion into action. You never know – that working mom at a UFCW picket line fighting for 15 and a union could be leading her community in Congress. She can if more of us make an intentional effort to lift up women, lift up diversity, lift up representatives that look like and live like the people.

When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won and convened a 50% female cabinet, I loved his answer as to why — he said “because it’s 2015.” Well, UFCW Woman, it’s 2016 and we intend to break the ultimate gender barrier this fall with a woman President of the United States, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

You know it’s not just about selecting a 50% female cabinet or electing one woman Speaker or President — it’s about electing female leaders from ALL walks of life and advancing feminist policies. Let’s be real – when we say “women” the default for far too long has been white women. We talk about this quite often in the California Democratic Party where I chair the Women’s Caucus: When we talk about feminism – equality without apology for all – we can’t be talking about for all white women or all highly educated women but all women, regardless of color, class, creed, disability, sexual orientation or sexual identity. We need to be FULLY representative in order to to have authentic leadership and actual results.

We saw this with VAWA – and as a former domestic violence prosecutor I’m so pleased that the UFCW Women’s Convention will pass a resolution about domestic violence as a workplace issue. We love that Joe Biden wrote the Violence Against Women Act. But you know who got it re-authorized? Congresswoman Gwen Moore, an African American woman who spoke personally about crimes against her and insisted to the Republicans who wanted to exclude immigrants, Native Women, and LGBT women that they include ALL women under VAWA. We won because rather than having a white man tell other white men how to treat women, we centered the debate on an African American leader whose community was directly affected by the problem. THAT is what turning passion into action with authentic leadership looks like!

So how do we get to more of this authentic leadership?

Women turning passion into action answer a call to service – our message to the future. We find the North Star that guides us — the values of liberty, justice, equality, and democracy for all. And then we find concrete paths to service: public interest campaigns that grow support and give results.

Many of us remain the primary caregivers for our children and our parents, so family time is harder to let go. And public attitudes remain stereotypical, even among our close supporters.

I remember receiving a service award during my days as a deputy prosecutor. There I was, my speech all lined up, when a dear family friend we called “Mama Tina” approached my table of professional peers, announcing loudly, “I’m praying for your husband.” My response, thinking she mistook me for one of my married sisters: “It’s Christine; I don’t have a husband.” “I know,” she proclaimed, “that’s why I am praying for him!” My colleagues roared with laughter. And this was my friend!

We hear this all the time. Single? You can’t attract em. Married? You’re putting your career over them. Parent? Who’s taking care of the children? We were in college when my mom ran for Congress and people still asked her who was taking care of her children. Divorced? You couldn’t keep em. Widow? You killed em!

I have never heard a man in politics being asked who was taking care of his children. Some ask us these family care questions to protect us from ourselves. Some who did make our choices as trailblazers repeat to us the rationalization start made to themselves for why they didn’t try. And others just really want to know how we intend to make this work.

Now that I have found the husband Mama Tina was praying for, Peter and I are raising our family and closely connected to the fight for 15. Every boot camp – from across town to the 30 states my daughter has come with me for Pelosi Boot Camps – my first question is childcare. And everywhere we go, we find good paying quality childcare.

We parents know that entering public service means that we need to entrust our precious treasure – our children – to well-paid quality caregivers — and we in turn must fight to ensure that all of their caregivers are paid a decent wage.

And we know that the fight for 15 is just one issue at stake in this election.

You know that attacks on unions are attacks on YOUR power to have a seat at the table.

Your power is at risk. The election this fall in the US will have ripple effects around the world. Let’s review the prospects.

Last July on national television, I predicted Donald Trump could be the Republican nominee and was practically sneered off the set. But I knew – and Congressman Keith Ellison who made the same prediction on a different network last July – also knew – that Trump could exploit the working people’s dissatisfaction — even though he will perpetuate the same trickle down economics that brought us outsourcing, downsizing, and wage theft in the first place! We knew and now everyone sees that Trump’s answer is to tell workers “we’ll just get rid of the Others – deport Mexicans, ban Muslims, and clear a path for you. Make America Great Again “for whom?” you might ask. Maybe we need to have a ban on Donald Trump until we find out what’s going on.

Do you believe that healthcare is a right not a privilege or are you suing President Barack Obama and trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act?

Do you believe in climate change or do you deny science?

Do you believe that good government has a role in clean air and clean water or like the House Republicans do you want to roll back the nutrition standards Michelle Obama got in the Farm Bill, cut school lunch and – as the House Tea Party budget proposes – eliminate Head Start?

Do you trust the movement you built – the fight for 15 movement that was out in the streets when politicians were still “ready for 1010″ in 2014 – the movement that brings fast food workers, retail workers, childcare workers, and homecare workers together? Or do you want to eliminate the federal minimum wage?

Do you want Barack Obama choosing Supreme Court Justices or do you want Donald Trump?

Do you trust veterans care for our courageous military families with Bernie Sanders or with the Republicans who want to privatize the VA and cut earned benefits?

Do you want to strengthen our American Safety Net Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, or do you want to privatize and slash earned benefits?

Do you want to build bridges or walls?

Do you want military decisions and diplomatic efforts in the hands of Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump?

As Vice President Joe Biden says, “don’t compare me to the Almighty – compare me to the alternative. Well these are the alternatives. And it’s not just about electing Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump and having her appoint a diverse cabinet. It’s about electing a progressive Senate, Congress, and state leadership.

As a Hillary supporter I discuss this with my Bernie supporter friends. We will work to elect leaders and to implement the policies. We’re not just here for the primary, for the convention, for the election — we are here for the work. As a San Francisco Democrat, my values are triangulated against quite often. I push from the left side of the political spectrum all the time. I think my values should be the law of the land – as marriage equality and healthcare now are – and I intend to work with Hillary and Bernie supporters to turn our progressive policy goals into reality.

UFCW Woman, do you trust the work you are doing turning passion into action?

If you do – if you believe in a positive, progressive platform that builds on our progress – then go out of these halls and shout it from the rooftops. From the picket lines. From the phone banks. From the door knocks. From the social media. From the mainstream media. From the union halls. From the voting booths. Let them hear you as we travel that path to equality together.

And as we work together we know we do so climbing a double stair as women leaders.

We climb a double stair to ascend as professionals and as women, confronting stereotypes and breaking barriers along the way. For women of color, a triple stair. For women of color in the LBGT community, a quadruple stair. We climb and climb, inspired by the dreams of the women who dared to to be what we can be before society was ready for them. And we break barriers along the way, caring dreams with us.

Let me tell you one of those dreams I carry. After going to law school and passing the bar exam, I got a set of embossed seal invitations from the California State Bar for my swearing in ceremony. This was big. Called a girlfriend – she said “oh it’s a cattle call – you stand in the civic auditorium with thousands of people and say ‘I state your name.’ Nothing personal.”

Nevertheless I decided to send a California State Bar invitation to my grandmother Nancy D’Alesandro in Baltimore. Yes it was in a cavernous auditorium and no – in her late 80s she couldn’t come all the way out west – but like my grammar school, high school and college graduation notices I sent it anyway just to share the moment.

We had been told the family lore that my grandmother had once taken law school classes but had to stop when one of her boys got sick. She lost that boy to whooping cough before there was a vaccine – a tragedy. She raised more children, including my mom, but she never went back to school. She did go on to serve however.

She and her “moccasin army” of women activists helped my grandfather win campaigns for Maryland House of Delegates, US Congress and Baltimore Mayor. She fought the power company late into her 70s saying at one point “I’m on a limited income with unlimited time.”

My grandmother was a servant leader – but in the back of her mind she always wanted to have been a lawyer.

My grandmother wrote: “I am the second happiest person to get this invitation. How proud I am to see you accomplish what I could not finish all those years ago.

Fifty years had gone by but my grandmother had held on to her dream. She hadn’t said it much but she remembered. And I realized that I didn’t just get my degree – I got her degree. I was the first woman in my family to graduate from law school and the second woman to try.

When I went to court and saw that sometimes I was the only woman in the room – that made an impression. And when it was just me with a female court reporter or clerk or bailiff and all male lawyers or a deposition in a tall building law firm with me as the only woman in the room, I would remember my grandmother’s letter and her dream, seeing just how audacious my parents’ dream was for me and how even more audacious my grandmother’s dream was for her time. I made sure to seek allies with intersectionality and intention. When I go to even progressive events -unlike this lovely, diverse women’s convention – sometimes it’s me and 5 white guys on a panel. That’s unacceptable! So I keep pushing for more inclusion, bringing company with me. And as I continue to climb, I’m carrying my grandmother’s dream with me.

Sisters of the UFCW Women’s Network – you know this story because many of you have lived it too. You are all carrying the dreams and the unlived lives of your grandmothers, your families, your union sisters and brothers as you turn passion into action.

So when you lave this convention and return to your communities, share the UFCW Women’s convention actions with your family, friends, mentors and networks. Reach out – otherwise you may never know whose dreams you carry along with your own. But once you know, you take responsibility for those dreams, and you gain the strength you need to keep turning passion into action, turning aspirations into policies, and yes, turning progressive campaigns into winning elections, and transforming the lives of working people. Go forth, reach out, and grab a hand. If we make the effort we will open doors for women.

Go forth and speak out about your work here today – you never know whose dream you may be carrying. Let’s make sure that this union, this movement, and the leaders we elect are truly representative of our people. And we will carry their dreams together.

How To Make Friends With Stress

A caveman out on a hunt or a soldier on the front line needs the stress response in his body in order to have the energy to fight; the anticipation of the life-or-death experience puts his entire physiology into a state of red alert. So from a positive perspective, stress enables us to meet challenges, and to push ourselves into new areas of experience or understanding through heightening awareness and focused concentration.

This would be fine if we had a bear to hunt or a war to wage. However, the stress most of us are dealing with is not from life-or-death situations, but is the distress that arises from an accumulation of pressure from much smaller issues. And although each separate incident may appear benign, if our response becomes increasingly stressful and we are no longer able to maintain our equilibrium then the body will put out the red alert.

The stress response is activated when we are unable to adjust our behavior or deal creatively with demanding circumstances; we soon feel overwhelmed, like a steam cooker coming to full pressure. We are the only one who can turn down the heat, but unfortunately we usually feel powerless to do so.

Does talking to your mother-in-law leave you wanting to bite your nails? Does your work overwhelm you and make you unable to cope? What do you do when you just want to scream from pure frustration? Stress is a derivation of the Latin word meaning ‘to be drawn tight,’ which is exactly what happens when too much comes at once.

When there is no animal to hunt or war to fight in which to release the energy accumulating inside us, where does it go? Is it difficult to believe that ulcers or irritable bowel syndrome are connected to high stress levels, that we might get constipation or lose our appetite? What happens to the urge to scream? Is it surprising that marriages suffer, or that alcohol and food addiction is rising?

Few of us like to think of ourselves as stressed; we prefer to think of stress as something that happens to others, without realizing how susceptible we are ourselves, as the cause of stress is not so much the external circumstances, such as having too many demands and not enough time to fill them. Rather, it is about our perception of the circumstances as being overwhelming and our perception of our ability to cope when we feel stretched beyond what we perceive we are capable of. If we believe we cannot cope, then we will begin to lose ground; if we believe we can cope, then we will be able to ride over any obstacles.

Luckily, we can transform our beliefs and our perceptions. The idea that it is our work, family, or lifestyle that is causing us stress, and that if we were to change these then we would be fine, is seeing the situation from the wrong perspective.

Rather, it is the belief that something “out there” is causing us stress that is actually causing the stress. And although changing our circumstances certainly may help, invariably, no matter what we do, it is a change within our belief system and our perception of our capabilities that will make the biggest difference. In turn, this will help develop the relaxation response and begin to normalize everything the stress response has put out of balance.

In a relaxed state we have access to far greater physical and psychological energy levels. That is why stress-management, nap and meditation rooms are fast becoming an integral part of most forward thinking businesses. We can make friends with stress, increase our stress response, develop a higher level of adaptability, and the result of such change has a far-reaching effect on every aspect of ourselves, each other and our world.

Tackle TB to reduce maternal deaths: no time for complacency

When I was in South Africa last year I had the opportunity to hear the story of Juliet, a young Ugandan woman who on the day she had heard the joyous news that she was expecting twins, she also discovered that she was living with HIV. Fearing that she would be ostracized by her husband, family and friends, she did not disclose her status and did not return for medication, finding it difficult to justify repeated monthly visits to the clinic, particularly given the family’s limited resources. After five months she became very ill with tuberculosis (TB) and for the same reasons found it difficult to adhere to treatment. When the twins were born, one tragically fell sick and died at four months. When the second one became ill with TB, she finally sought the care she and her baby needed.

Sadly, Juliet’s story is all too familiar, particularly in the Sub-Saharan setting. The statistics paint a grim picture. Despite being preventable and curable, TB is the top infectious disease killer globally. While men are generally more at risk of TB than women, it has particularly severe consequences for women during their reproductive years. TB in pregnant women is associated with a six-fold increase in perinatal deaths and twice the risk of premature birth and low birth-weight.

In those living with HIV, TB is associated with more than double the risk of vertical transmission of HIV to the unborn child, and a three-fold increase in the risk of maternal and infant mortality. A disease of poverty that affects the most vulnerable populations, where gender inequities are all too common, TB also has a complex relationship with other social determinants such as nutrition and education. And, as Juliet’s story so clearly shows, access to the necessary services and continuity of care is further exacerbated by the associated stigma and discrimination, which is made worse by TB’s relationship with HIV.

There is immense opportunity presented by antenatal and mother and child health clinics for increasing access to TB and HIV services, and, thereby, reducing preventable mortality among mother and child. However, this opportunity is squandered if we do not have integrated services. It does not make any sense for a pregnant woman to have to travel to different clinics for antenatal, HIV and TB services. Not only does it have cost and time implications for the pregnant woman herself, but it will also affect others in the family, perhaps even interfering with the education of the older children who might have to care for the younger ones.

Not only should the services be available at a decentralized level and in the same place, but there should also be effective patient support and health education at a grassroots level to maximize adherence and ensure a healthy birth. Involvement of communities plays a crucial role here. In fact, after Juliet’s recovery she herself joined a non-governmental organization, mothers2mothers, and has worked for them as a “mentor mother”, helping to improve the health and wellbeing of mothers like herself, their babies and their families.

As delegates gather together at the Women Deliver conference in Copenhagen this month to discuss how to make development matter most for girls and women, TB and HIV-associated TB, clearly cutting across the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), must have a place in these discussions. If we are to end the global epidemics by 2030, as outlined in the SDGs, we need to mobilize support at global and national levels to remove underlying risk factors and assure gender-equitable access to TB and HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care and support for women. Strategic partnerships and synergies across the health system and within communities must be fostered to maximize entry points to TB prevention and care for women.

There are far too many Juliets in the world who are struggling to give birth to healthy babies and raise healthy families. We must establish integrated health systems that address all of the health needs of mothers and their children. And we must hold all stakeholders accountable for the delivery of comprehensive services, including TB prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Only then, can we begin to say that we are delivering real results for women in need across the globe.

Inside The GOP Effort To Draft An Independent Candidate To Derail Trump

A band of exasperated Republicans — including 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney, a handful of veteran consultants and members of the conservative intelligentsia — is actively plotting to draft an independent presidential candidate who could keep Donald Trump from the White House.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. On my last day in Rochester with Hadley, she had no appointments at the Mayo Clinic. Deciding she needed a break from the medical scene, we drove the red Impala an hour and a half to the Walker Art Center. We were excited – both of us are art enthusiasts and had never been to Minneapolis.

The museum was showing a retrospective of Cindy Sherman, whose work has been largely focused on the exploration of identity. Over the course of thirty years, Sherman has been her own model, capturing herself in a huge range of guises and personas. The Walker’s exhibition included 170 very large self-portraits, photographs for which she’d painstakingly transformed herself with clothing, makeup, wigs and even prosthetics to become someone else: 1950′s movie star, figure from a Dutch Master painting, society doyenne, clown, sexy provocateur, to name only a few. Hadley and I wandered through the rooms, amazed by how difficult it was to find the real Cindy Sherman in each of the bold portraits. They were fascinating and disturbing; I found myself somewhat relieved when, at the end of the exhibit, we watched a video of the artist discussing how she works. Finally, the real Cindy Sherman.

The portraits stayed with me. On the plane back to San Francisco the next day, I couldn’t help thinking about the challenge of presenting ourselves to the world in a way in which we can be truly seen. In Hadley’s case, she had put herself on exhibit for doctors over and over again. Unlike Cindy Sherman, she wore no disguises and strove to paint the clearest possible self-portrait, which made it especially hard for her to swallow the Mayo’s suggestion of a functional movement disorder. By trying to catch inconsistencies in Hadley’s movements, it was almost as if the doctor who’d first reported FMD had been looking for the disguise Hadley might be wearing to fool the specialists. During her diagnostic journey, Hadley had been scrutinized, analyzed, drugged, twisted, tilted, poked, punctured, injected, shocked, x-rayed, scanned, operated on. And still, doctors couldn’t seem to see her.

Before all of their testing, what the doctors could see they recorded in their medical reports:

Hadley Ferguson is a 33-year-old, right-handed woman from Montana
Patient is a very pleasant 33-year-old artist who works from home
Patient is a well-developed, well-nourished woman in no acute distress
Patient was awake, alert, and oriented x 3. Attention span and concentration were normal.
There was no evidence of thought disorder
Affect and mood were unremarkable
Verbal expression, comprehension, repetition, reading and writing were intact, prosody was intact
Hadley is a pleasant, alert, conversive, well-hydrated, well- nourished female in no acute distress
Mrs. Ferguson is a pleasant, 36-year-old woman
Alert, appropriate affect, excellent historian
Mental status was normal
She may need further psychological evaluation and counseling. Depression likely

The mighty Mayo machine spit Hadley back out into the oncoming winter with nothing certain to wrap around herself. The urine test for copper had been normal and her eyes had revealed no K-F rings, so Wilson’s disease was off the table. John flew out to be with her for her last days there and she was discharged with the following report:

EMG showed poor activation of upper and lower extremity muscles suggestive of an upper motor neuron process. There is no evidence of anterior horn cell involvement or any neuropathy. Our initial impression was a Parkinson plus syndrome with upper motor neuron findings. However thorough evaluation did not demonstrate any Parkinsonism. There are inconstancies in her examination, which points to a functional overlay. At this point I think that she has an upper motor neuron syndrome of undetermined etiology with functional overlay.
She will benefit from PT. She is open to be evaluated by behavioral psychologist close to her home to explore a psychological basis of functional overlay.
DIAGNOSES
#1 Upper Motor Neuron syndrome of undermined etiology

Hadley returned to Missoula depleted, confused, profoundly distressed and wishing she’d never gone to Rochester. Her Mayo experience had eroded her faith in the medical establishment, and once again, she was filled with self-doubt. If she was really seriously ill, why were so many doctors conflicted about the diagnosis? she wondered. Could she have made herself sick?

As the Montana winter deepened, she struggled with her painting projects. Dr. Reid agreed with her that she should go back on the levodopa because it was clearly of some benefit to her movement. On New Year’s Eve, she was terrified when she experienced some cognitive confusion: sitting in front of her dinner plate, she couldn’t remember which hand to hold her knife and fork in and how to use them.

On the phone one day Hadley said to me, “Well, whatever it is, they’ll find out when they autopsy my brain, I guess.” I realized she was at her lowest point yet. When she said she might start writing down her thoughts, I encouraged her.

None of us knows our fate; I just happen to be in a place where people are trying to predict mine and it’s all over the map. It’s terrifying. If my unknown disease had a name, I would have something to fight. I have to decide that Unknown Disease is my fight. This is hard. I am not there or even close to that yet. My only hope is that someday, my experience will provide answers that will help doctors understand better this unknown disease, so someone else will have a name for their disease. I have to believe there’s a reason I’m going through this, that the reason is beyond myself and is a key to helping others.

Hadley wrote a letter to her MDS, Dr. Youngman. Even though she wouldn’t send it, she found relief in the exercise.

I don’t believe I have motor neuron disease. When you gave me that diagnosis, my instincts were jumping up and down, waving wildly, holding up signs that said STOP! WRONG WAY! I still believe I have a parkinsonism. I believe you were right about MSA or atypical Parkinson’s and that someday you will have that confirmed. I think there is a lot in this world that relies on data and facts that may not be the same in every situation, and in those cases we have to step out and consider things we can’t see. I think you and I both lost some of our trust in ourselves in this process.

I wonder how things might have been different if you had given me some real thought that last day I saw you, if you had talked with me about the reasons for the abrupt shift in diagnosis to motor neuron disease, or even just said, “I really don’t know; motor neuron disease looks like what it could be, but let’s keep an open mind over the next 6 months to a year.” If you’d said that, I probably could have avoided the whole ordeal at the Mayo, which has only confused my situation further. Instead, shifting my diagnosis has derailed me from getting help, from feeling optimistic, from wanting to face things head on and make the most of life. It has taken everything away from me that was helpful. You left me stranded and I had to fend for myself. It was sudden, without warning, and then you were done, gone.

On another day, Hadley wrote:

The financial burden of my health is hard to ignore. I feel a responsibility to take care of those burdens. It is because of my medical situation that we struggle every month to stay on top of our bills. We’re working so hard and at some point there is only so much we can do. What was I thinking, saying yes to the projects on my plate? I am digging myself into a deep hole and I am worried I won’t get out of it.

In her journal entry, Hadley describes the quadruple whammy of her situation: feeling her body failing, being separated from the creative work she loves, letting her family and clients down and racking up medical expenses. Because of her pre-existing condition from birth, pulmonary stenosis, her only choice for health insurance was a state plan with a very high deductible. In 2009, before she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, she and John together had earned plenty from her painting and his law practice and were easily able to meet all their expenses. But Hadley’s productivity fell as her health worsened and with all the medical testing, bills piled up. On the last day of 2009, she had had an episode of incontinence that, considered together with her nerve pain, had indicated the need for two emergency MRIs. Because she hadn’t yet met her health insurance deductible for the year 2009, by the beginning of 2010, she and John owed over $ 11,000 in medical expenses. As the designated bill-payer in their household, Hadley became increasingly anxious about their financial situation. John was working as hard as he could, but in 2010, Hadley earned less than a quarter of what she’d earned the year before. She tried to solve the money problem without worrying John by putting some of their expenses on credit cards and letting a few bills go. Occasionally, she would trade a painting for professional services, like therapy. In 2011, she had her most successful year yet, earning more than double her 2010 income, and it seemed as though they were getting back on track. But debts still dogged them and Hadley started dreading the mail when it came. Finally, in 2012 while she was at the Mayo Clinic, John went through the mail and saw the many past due and collection notices. On his own, he decided to have their mail forwarded to a P.O. box so that Hadley would no longer have the stress of looking at the bills. Hadley appreciated that he never made her feel guilty about the debts and from then on, they’ve worked together on their finances. But the question of how they would manage Hadley’s medical expenses with her reduced income still plagued them. With partisan battles raging over Obamacare throughout 2012, Hadley held onto the hope that she would be one of those who would significantly benefit from the new insurance laws.

In late February 2012, Hadley was clearing out her medicine cabinet, perhaps as a way of uncluttering her mind. She ran across the levodopa that Dr. Youngman had prescribed at her appointment nearly a year ago, which she’d never taken. Levodopa medication is formulated with a combination of levodopa, the chemical that replenishes dopamine, and carbidopa, an agent that counteracts levodopa’s side effect of nausea. The medication comes in many ratios of carbidopa/levodopa and most patients are sensitive to the differences. While Hadley had taken medication with ratios of 10/100 and 25/250 carbidopa/levodopa without much benefit and a lot of nausea, she hadn’t taken the 25/100 formula that Dr. Youngman had prescribed. On a whim, she decided to try it. Within a few days, she felt a remarkable change.

“It’s how I felt a year ago,” she told me on the phone. “My energy’s back. I can’t believe it! I feel like I could make it up Mt. Sentinel. And camping sounds fun to me. Maybe I only have Parkinson’s, after all!”

I had just awakened and was still in bed; I sat up when I heard the excitement in her voice. “Maybe you do only have Parkinson’s!” I said. “Wouldn’t that be amazing?”

In my head, I quickly tried to rationalize why this particular ratio of carbidopa/levodopa would make a profound difference in how she felt. Could it be that the smaller proportion of carbidopa in the prescriptions she’d taken previously had made the side effects from the levodopa overwhelming for her body? The 25/100′s she was now taking was the formulation I had been taking for three years with great results. Her general improvement seemed explainable by the change in meds, I reasoned, pushing back the doubts; but what about her autonomic problems, like urinary retention and orthostatic hypotension, and…? I stayed quiet. I knew Hadley probably heard her own chorus of doubting voices. But she seized this remarkable shift with gusto. She posted the new development on our Parkinson’s Facebook page and our group responded joyfully and thoughtfully. “We are all unique,” one person wrote. “I don’t see how they can clinically lump us together for treatment. You are a great example of this.”

Hope can burn so brightly it hurts, but it’s hard to look away from. Hadley’s reprieve was short-lived.

Need To Make A Healthy Change? Start With Self-Care Sprints

Day after day, you’re deluged with all manner of media pushing you to do this or that to achieve your holy grail of optimal health and well-being. Guzzle the green shake, hit the hot yoga, hold a five-minute plank or unplug for an hour. Despite repeated efforts to do what the guru de jour is advocating, you keep falling down on your behind, feeling defeated by what’s beginning to look like mission impossible.

Instead of an overhaul, why not start small, so that you’re not overwhelmed? I like to think of it as a daily self-care sprint. Rather than investing tons of time upfront, try out new healthy habits for five minutes at a time to see if they stick. That way, whether you’re time-starved, sleep-deprived or otherwise overburdened, you can get past excuses or fears and finally take that first step toward establishing a healthy lifestyle. Do what you want – and what you need.

Commit to performing just one daily sprint in each of three areas – improve your mind, eat well and strengthen your body – and work on each new habit until it sticks. Heck, that’s just 15 minutes a day at the very least. You can do this!

To help get you started, I’ve created just a few guidelines:

  1. All devices and screens should be turned off unless required for the sprint.

  2. Do as many sprints as you wish throughout the day.

  3. Stepping it up: If you’re just beginning, limit any new habits to five-minute sprints. Once you get in the groove, you can expand any five-minute sprints that “stick” to 10 or 15 minutes and add more sprints. Finally, as you advance, you can continue to increase the amount of time you spend on a self-care sprint and the number of sprints you do.

To get started, here are some ideas of self-care sprints you might try. Of course, feel free to create your own lists that focus on areas you’d like to improve or address.

Improve Your Mind

  • Meditate or pray.

  • Write in a journal.

  • Take five deep, cleansing breaths.

  • Sit silently and be mindfully observant of everything around you.

  • Write a list of five things for which you’re grateful.

  • Write a list of five things that bring you joy.

  • Integrate at least one thing that brings you joy into each day.

  • De-clutter a messy home or work area.

  • Write down five terrific things about your body, appearance or performance.

  • Make plans to go out with friends or family.

  • Soak in a tub.

  • To wind down before you go to sleep, spend five minutes laying in muted light reflecting on one positive highlight of your day.

Eat Well

  • Remove processed or refined foods from your kitchen.

  • De-clutter your kitchen and eating area.

  • Chop vegetables.

  • Make a smoothie.

  • Learn how to read a nutrition label.

  • Pack your lunch or snacks.

  • Create a lovely ambiance for eating – a place setting, music, table flowers, or whatever else you wish to include; it’s worth reiterating, the TV and all other devices and screens should be turned off.

  • Write your grocery list.

  • Identify three to five foods you might binge on and substitute in a tasty, healthy substitute for each.

  • Sign up for a food-tracking app or program.

  • Learn a new recipe.

  • Pull out the best china for tea or coffee, and savor.

  • Schedule a family or friends shared meal date.

  • Log your foods in a journal or on a tracker.

Strengthen Your Body

  • Get up and move your body for five minutes after 45 minutes of sitting.

  • Take a five-minute walk.

  • Walk stairs.

  • Walk hills.

  • Crank up the music and dance.

  • Jump rope.

  • Choose a wearable tracking device.

  • Do a combination of one or more exercises, such as bent-knee or total body push-ups, wall squats, standing on one leg until you can’t any longer, planks or bridges.

  • Strength train using one or more body parts, such as your back and biceps.

  • Do ab exercises.

  • Do yoga poses.

  • Do pilates.

  • Run in place, on a treadmill or outdoors.

  • Use any cardio equipment, such as an elliptical, a treadmill, a cycle or a rower.

  • Choose new exercise music.

  • Register for a charity walk, run or bike event.

  • De-clutter your workout clothes closet area.

  • Launder and organize your workout clothes.

  • Pack your gym bag.

  • Stretch.

Happy sprinting!

What Would Aristotle Do?: Self-Control Through the Power of Reason

What Would Aristotle Do?: Self-Control Through the Power of Reason

Do you get upset easily, even about small things, or have trouble getting along with others? Do you feel down most of the time? Are you plagued by loneliness, grief, guilt, or a gnawing feeling of life’s futility? Does fear, anxiety, or worry often overwhelm you? In this uplifting, user-friendly guide, philosopher Elliot D. Cohen offers an uncommonly commonsense approach to these and many other problems of living. Cohen, one of the principal founders of "philosophical counseling" in the United States, reveals how you can attain genuine insight into the common confusions of everyday life by harnessing your own native powers of reason. "Early on in my work with clients, " writes Cohen, "I became aware that the utility of philosophy for ordinary life was in the rigors of its "rational, commonsense approach." Through engaging case studies drawn from his practice, and candid discussion of his own personal life ("stories of the road"), Cohen vividly illustrates how, by making unrealistic assumptions about life, you may be undermining your own personal and interpersonal happiness without even realizing it. Step by step, the author shows you how to use your native reason to expose, refute, correct, and overcome these sometimes dangerous, irrational assumptions hidden in your thinking. This realistic, no-nonsense, and drug-free approach to "rational medicine, " in the tradition of Aristotle, walks you through some of the most injurious and offending fallacies of life, and arms you with many commonsense prescriptions for attaining greater freedom and control over your life.

Senate Candidate Fails Miserably At Dodging Questions About Voter Fraud

DENVER — There’s dodging questions, and then there’s… whatever you call this:

Jon Keyser is the Republican establishment’s favored candidate to challenge Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) in the general election this fall. He’s also been dogged lately by fairly well substantiated allegations of voter fraud concerning falsified signatures used to get his name on the ballot (he filed suit to secure a spot on the ballot after coming up 86 signatures short).

When Denver7 reporter Marshall Zelinger pressed Keyser on the authenticity of some of those all-important signatures in an interview Thursday, the candidate flailed for a bit, then — having flailed some more — vaguely threatened Zelinger with his dog.

“What is your response to the voters who saw their names [on your petition to make the ballot] and they tell me they didn’t write their names?” Zellinger asks, opening the video.

“Well, Mitchell.” Zelinger corrects him: “Marshall.”

“Marshall, here’s the important thing,” Keyser responds. “The important thing is I’m on the ballot.”

Zelinger goes on to press Keyser on potential voter fraud, before Keyser recognizes him as the same reporter who came to his door Thursday. Sensing an out, he pounces:

“Wait, were you the — hold on — were you the guy who was creeping around my house yesterday?” he asks.

“I knocked on your door,” replies Zelinger.

“Ugh,” Keyser responds, shaking his head in disgust. “You woke up my kids. Yeah, my baby cried for an hour after that.”

“I apologize,” Zelinger says.

Keyser presses further: “Did you get to meet my dog?”

“My dog is a great dog — he’s bigger than you are.”
Jon Keyser

“I met your dog and your nanny,” says Zelinger. “She’s very kind. Your dog was kind.”

“My dog is a great dog — he’s bigger than you are,” Keyser says. “He’s huge. Big guy. Very protective.”

“I don’t know what that meant,” Zelinger responds, “but OK.”

Incredibly, the bizarre interview was actually an encore performance to an awkward series of questions Keyser struggled through at a debate earlier in the night, in which the moderator focused on the exact same issue.

Instead of answering the question at hand, Keyser returned time and again to the same tired phrase: “I’m on the ballot, and I’m going to beat Michael Bennet.” Here’s that exchange, which The Washington Post has dubbed Keyser’s “Marco Rubio moment“:

PHOTOS: The Chinese Tech Workers Who Have To Sleep At The Office

China’s tech sector is thriving. Competition is high, new startups are popping up everywhere and the country’s consumer tech market could outstrip that of the United States in coming years.

But for those working in the industry, rapid growth too often means toiling long hours at the office, even overnight. Many companies expect employees to work overtime every day, and have begun installing more bunk beds and couches to accommodate midday naps.

Some workers even live at the office in order to get shut-eye, instead of sitting through a long commute home.

“We have to get up at 8:30 a.m. because all our co-workers come to work at 9:30 and we wash in the same bathroom everyone uses,” Liu Zhanyu, an employee at a recruiting firm, told Reuters.

Check out photos of Chinese tech workers sleeping at the office:

How (and Why) to Play With Your Food

Growing up most children are taught not to play with their food. In fact, the vast majority of adults frown on creative play regarding food and it has a huge impact on how people grow up psychologically. Because I am such a big proponent of play in all aspects of life, it is particularly important for me to add it into a natural and necessary aspect of life: eating.

We all eat. Some people eat a lot, some people eat little, but if we want to survive for longer than a couple of weeks, we will eat food and meals in order to fuel our bodies. These meals can be either conscious and intentional parts of our lives or they can be hurried, uncomfortable necessities and the choice is completely ours.

Playing with Food the Right Way

It’s fun to fantasize about having a handful of food, throwing it at a friend, and seeing it splatter on them. The traditional “food fight” is exhilarating and fun, but there is no need to waste food or make a mess every time you want to prepare food to eat.

Here are a few perspectives and ways you can play with your food in order to have a more enjoyable experience with this universal need.

1. Gather with people you love — the first step in having a playful, enjoyable experience is to be intentional about whom you invite to a dinner. For many, eating alone is the easiest way to make food less special and anxiety-ridden. Put yourself in front of people who mean something to you and who are already playful.

The more fun-loving, non-serious people you invite into your life, the better your meal and the more playful the vibe. I host something called an “intentional dinner” where we all come together with a specific intention and cook tapas style all night long.

2. Approach food playfully — There are a million ways to approach our food and context makes a big difference. In the context of coffee, for example, some people are addicted and see it as a drug that they need in order to survive. Instead, look at it like coffee is humorous and connects individuals together (like President Obama and Seinfeld!).

By having a more playful perspective on how you view these things, you’ll have a much better respect for what you consume.

3. Mix it up — eating the same food every day can be great if you are focused on your purpose and mission and don’t want to spend mental energy making something different. That being said, it is great to mix up what you cook and how you cook it in order to throw some playful chaos into your life.

To do this, you can just buy some ingredients at random, combine them with what you already have, and create a completely new concoction from scratch. It might be inspired by a certain dish or style of cooking, but mixing it up can be playful and rewarding for the cooking and eating process. Also, you could choose to find a whacky recipe and put it together from scratch.

4. Romantic partners — you’d be amazed how playful cooking can be. Splash a little oil, rub some fruit juice on your partner, or throw some raw ingredients around. All of it is welcome and the playful energy will immediately be transferred into the bedroom.

3 Ways to Change Your Subconscious Thoughts

Many of us experience subconscious setbacks on a daily basis. These experiences from our past start holding us back from doing what we really ought to be doing.

Maybe you have trouble leaving food on your plate because as a child you were told, “finish your dinner, there are starving children in Africa”. Or you tell yourself, “I have back luck with love” and shuffle through woman after woman because you had your heart broken at 22.

These are all subconscious thoughts lingering in the back of our minds holding us back from the life you truly want.

The subconscious mind is very protective. It attempts to protect us from harm, real or imaginary. In an attempt to protect you from being a spoiled brat, you always finish the food on your plate. Then, in an attempt to protect your heart, you never open up enough to get hurt.

This same part of our mind is also super lazy. Meaning once it decides to protect us from something, it plops down and stays put. It likes to stay stuck unless we are completely determined to change these patterns.

So, how do we change our subconscious thoughts, habits and patterns? Here are a few ways.

1. Affirmations: A positive, uplifting sentence you repeat to yourself whenever feelings of insecurity or negativity emerge. Our minds can’t process two conflicting thoughts at the same time. Therefore, whatever is repeated, wins. Affirmations are my jam. All of my clients are given affirmations to repeat as part of their homework.

2. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is a relaxed state of focused concentration where the subconscious is more open to accepting new changes. It’s great for trying to create a massive shift in behavior or eliminate a negative habit.

3. Guided Meditation: Guided mediation is a state of relaxation designed to remove clutter from the mind. The focus is usually on deep breathing and being mindful of the present moment. It helps create focus and clarity towards subconscious patterns.

Aligning subconscious thoughts with our conscious goals, succeeding becomes a heck of a ton easier. There aren’t any underlying feelings dragging you backwards.

For more information on hypnosis visit Fayetteville Hypnosis and for short meditation videos visit Nap Time Meditation on YouTube.

You Can Finally See One Of WWII’s Most Infamous And Rare Japanese Bombers In Hawaii

Of the three types of Japanese aircraft that descended on Pearl Harbor on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, the Nakajima B5N bomber was by far the most destructive, becoming one of the most feared and deadly weapons of World War II.

Nicknamed “Kate” by U.S. allied forces, there were 1,149 B5N bombers in circulation during the war. Today, however, there are only two known survivors, both wreckages, and not a single intact Kate remains.

With the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack approaching later this year, however, Hawaii’s Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor has unveiled the wreckage of one of the infamous Kates as part of its permanent collection.

“This one is truly a one-of a kind,” Kenneth DeHoff, the museum’s executive director of operations, told The Huffington Post. “You can see the rising sun red ball [from the Japanese flag] on the wing; the paint is still there.”

While many Nakajima B5Ns were used in the attack on Pearl Harbor, this particular aircraft was built one year later in 1942 and was therefore not involved, DeHoff said.

The Kate is already on public display (next to the much-revered “Swamp Ghost“) and the museum has begun work to bring her back to life, beginning a restoration process predicted to take five years and cost $ 1 million. When completed, the plane will be the only restored Kate in the world.

“This will be a very complete restoration, right down to the point where if you put fluids in it, we’d be able to crank the thing up and fly it,” DeHoff added.

The museum declined to specify how they acquired the plane, though they insist it was done in a legal manner. (In the past, governments including Papua New Guinea have accused salvagers of illegally removing planes from their countries.)

Justin Taylan, director of Pacific Wrecks, a nonprofit history site, says he has studied and documented the history of the plane by following records of the identification number the plane flew under, 302. He believes this specific plane took its final flight in 1945 and was based at Rabaul, a Japanese stronghold at the tip of New Britain Island, in Papua New Guinea.

Taylan’s research also shows that The Pacific Aviation Museum acquired the plane sometime after 2010. In its 2011 and 2012 annual reports, the museum lists the plane as being in storage in New Zealand.

While we might never know the true history of this particular bomber — the museum will neither confirm nor deny Taylan’s account — the museum’s restoration will provide an important missing piece to the World War II, and especially the Pearl Harbor, puzzle.

The Pacific Aviation Museum, after all, is located on Ford Island, smack dab in the middle of Pearl Harbor. To see the aircraft standing on the exact spot where it once caused so much damage “is really a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” DeHoff says. “You really get a sense of being there.”

How to ‘Find Yourself’ in Your 20s

Your twenties is the time to find yourself and discover who you are, so they say. But you’ve come to realize it’s not as easy and magical as you previously thought.

Here are some tips to help you during this sometimes frustrating, confusing, yet exciting phase of your young life.

DON’T PURSUE A HIGHER DEGREE RIGHT AWAY: Unless you have a passion for a specific field like medicine, politics, art, law, or whatever it may be — wait on pursuing a higher degree until you figure out what it is that you truly want to study. Ideally, if you’re not ready for higher education, try to tackle something lighter (i.e. community college or vocational school).

ASK QUESTIONS: Don’t be afraid to ask questions about faith. It’s a part of growing and learning. You can always speak to your parents, a local imam or even a religious study group. Seek the opinions of others and then do research yourself. Learning about other faiths can help your own religious identity grow, and in turn, solidify your personal identity.

TALK TO OTHERS: Ask your closest friends and family members what they think of you. They could see you as an honest, trustworthy, caring and loving person, when you might not have the best impression of yourself. This discovery alone can help alter the way you look at yourself, hopefully for the better.

DON’T JUMP INTO A RELATIONSHIP:
Thinking about marriage in your twenties is natural and can be rewarding if you find someone who supports you in your quest to find yourself. But don’t jump into a relationship because you think it will fill the emptiness in your life. You have to fill that emptiness yourself, and it starts by figuring out your insecurities, fears, passions and things you need to work on.

EXERCISE: You may be thinking, “What does exercise have to do with finding myself?” Well, quite a bit actually. The more you keep your body healthy, the more your mind and soul will stay nourished. Once your mind, body and soul are in sync, you can think clearly about the person you are and the person you want to become.

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO: Some people discover their passions at a young age, and make a career out of it. Julie Andrews, for example, chose to be an actress and singer because she loved to sing and act, and she knew she was good at it. If you don’t know what you are passionate about, that’s okay. Figuring out your personal identity alone (i.e. character and manner) will help you master your self-esteem and confidence to the point where you will be able to tackle any professional field you are interested in pursuing. Think about what you’re interested in, what you’re skilled at, and chase it!

DON’T GIVE UP: Don’t get down on yourself. If you feel like you’ve reached a breaking point, go to people in their 30s or older and seek their advice — they’ve been through it.

There’s a lot of pressure at this age to know who you are and what you want to do with your life, but the fact that you are even thinking about it means you’re taking a step in the right direction. And always remember, you are not alone.

Sean Parker’s New Mission: Destroy Cancer

Sean Parker knows a thing or two about sharing.

In 1999, he cofounded Napster, the notorious file-sharing service that became a household name as people discovered online music piracy for the first time. Parker later became the first president of Facebook, where, of course, more than a billion people regularly share links, media and status updates.

But sharing means something different to the 36-year-old entrepreneur now. He’s focused on creating a new way for the top minds fighting cancer to coordinate their efforts.

Parker is funding rigorous research into immunotherapy, a type of treatment that helps the body’s own immune system combat cancer. An alternative to radiation or chemo, immunotherapy has been shown to be effective on certain cancers, though criticisms have surfaced over the treatment’s cost and potential side effects.

Parker’s new initiative also provides a set of tools to researchers at several different centers to create a standardized exchange of information. In short, the new initiative is about creating data and distributing it, something Parker has always been interested in.

Of course, he’s changed quite a bit from his Napster days.

“There are a lot of people like myself who are frustrated that we’ve been working in consumer Internet for a long time, and that’s of dubious long-term significance to humanity,” Parker told The Huffington Post in an interview last week. “Maybe it makes sense to focus on things that are a bit more meaningful rather than doing the easy commercial stuff around building products for teenagers.”

On May 2, the Vatican awarded Parker the 2016 Pontifical Key Philanthropy Award for his contributions to immunotherapy research. HuffPost followed up with Parker to hear more about his latest initiative.

First, congratulations on the award. Would you ever have expected anything like this?

I don’t think you necessarily expect or even go into any of these things imagining that anyone’s going to recognize them — certainly not the Vatican. It’s really incredible.

It’s more important from the perspective of the scientists, researchers and the field of immunotherapy than it is for me personally. The field of immunotherapy has the potential to cure patients. Not even the potential — it’s already providing curative treatments for patients who otherwise weren’t treatable.

Anything that can be done to draw attention to the power of this specific approach is incredibly helpful to the field. And it’s also helpful for patients who need to be able to make an informed choice. They need to be able to go out there and say they want to receive immunotherapy.

Why did you become particularly interested in life sciences?

There’s a general movement amongst Silicon Valley entrepreneurs toward life sciences. There’s this feeling that computations and big data are finally at a point where they’re converging with the work that’s being done in the life sciences, and that convergence moment is driving a lot of enthusiasm.

One would expect to have a lot of interest in life science. We’re presumably biological beings. And we’re all faced with our own mortality. This is something that we should be really interested in.

I think people coming from a computer science or an engineering background in Silicon Valley may not feel that their skills were applicable to the field a decade ago, and maybe that applicability is more obvious now. There are a lot of people like myself who are frustrated that we’ve been working in consumer Internet for a long time, and that’s of dubious long-term significance to humanity. Maybe it makes sense to focus on things that are a bit more meaningful rather than doing the easy commercial stuff around building products for teenagers.

So much of your mission seems to be based on connecting scientists and fostering collaboration. It strikes me as a little ironic in this era of 24/7 connectivity and communication.

I think it’s widely understood within the life sciences world that collaboration doesn’t take place between centers, or even between researchers as efficiently as it should. One piece of that is data sharing. It’s not as straightforward as getting scientists to talk to one another. They do that. They go to conferences, they email one another, they ask questions.

But the problems definitely run deeper than just getting them communicating. If you take the problem of data sharing for instance, data sharing — in order to share data, you need to first be, let’s say, measuring the same thing. You need to be recording the same data in multiple clinical trials, in multiple sites, across patients. You need to have standardized ways of measuring the data.

We’re all faced with our own mortality. This is something that we should be really interested in.”
Sean Parker

If you’re not measuring the same thing, then it’s not really shareable. That gets at systemic problems with the life sciences world that an outsider coming from another field would initially have a hard time understanding, as I certainly did when I started working in this industry. It’s only logical that researchers working on the same problem across many different institutions would be collaborating and taking part in data sharing. In theory that should take place. But practically it’s difficult.

When you have a consortium, you make sure people have the same tools available, so they can measure the same things. One of the advantages of having a consortium is that you have six centers effectively operating under the same framework. You’re able to collect samples in the same way, then you’re able to interrogate those samples or conduct tests at different points of time.

There’s been so much talk about how machine learning and artificial intelligence could improve health care. IBM Watson, for example, says it can connect doctors to research like never before and help develop innovative treatments. What do you think of that model?

It’s hard to speak specifically to IBM Watson because it feels a little bit like a marketing effort. In life sciences, we’re dealing with systems that ultimately, if we had a perfect description of them that was perfectly defined or characterized, then we could build a system and we could do more of the research in a computer system. But we’re not at that point yet. There are so many holes in the model of what’s in the immune system. It’s just incredible how little is known about things where it seems like we already know so much.

I think that’s everyone’s dream — if we had systems that were really good models of what’s happening in the human body in all of its complexity. It would be a heck of a lot easier to interrogate those systems than to do this work in humans. Talk to biologists, they’ll tell you we’re a lot farther away from that than the computer scientists will tell you.

I think personally I was shocked by the complexity or the number of variables that are currently unknown, or interactions that are unknown. It’s always a tradeoff between doing the research that you know will be valuable in humans immediately versus doing the long-term discovery efforts that will speed up the process of learning in the future.
