Russians Feel a Tempest Brewing

the moscow times

MOSCOW — Moscow is already packed with snow and the usual holiday traffic jams, but the mood every evening in the metro is far from festive. Anyone who rides the outlying radial metro lines will encounter ample cause for conflict on an almost daily basis.

Every metro system in the world is plagued with an aggressive drunk or drug addict now and then. And not only in Russia do passengers avoid the offending individual with the help of earphones, tablets or by just pretending that nothing is wrong. And not only Russian police are capable of fining somebody for causing a public disturbance when, in fact, the person was trying to protect someone else from wanton aggression — as happened in Moscow last week.

What is peculiar to the Russian capital is the increased level of aggression seen this past year, even while the willingness to confront that aggression has remained just as low as before.

This disparity is only one of the less obvious signs of the declining health of Russian society. Such signs are accumulating in various areas of public life, each signaling a malfunction like the “dead” pixels that appear, one by one, on an aging monitor screen.

Most of these problems do not seem to affect the underlying social and political foundations of society, but that foundation is already suffering tangible effects from the steadily worsening economic situation. Although it cannot be proven scientifically that an increased number of cracks in the facade is directly linked to greater seismic activity that threatens the building’s foundation, the sheer number of such cracks naturally makes onlookers want to maintain a safe distance from the structure.

These “cracks” are numerous and varied.

Never before in post-Soviet history have Russia’s service sector employees shown such a blatant disregard for the basic requirements of their jobs. It seems as if every single shop, service-oriented business, private company and government office along with municipal employees, bank managers, railway conductors and waiters at second-rate restaurants have simultaneously returned to the Soviet custom of barking rudely at customers. No trade deficit has yet appeared, but the negative attitude that accompanied the deficit that preceded the Soviet collapse is already here.

Perhaps never before in all of Russian history has the level of professionalism in all spheres dropped so precipitously.

Newly built road interchanges are made in such a way that after the first snowfall pedestrians must clamber over roadside mountains of black, half-melted snow containing a mix of anti-icing agents and mud.

This taxing daily struggle for survival in Russia calls to mind the words of the mayor of a small Finnish town above the Arctic Circle who, when he visited Moscow in the early 2000s and learned how much money the city authorities spend on cleaning snow from the streets, remarked that frankly such a sum could clear all the snow from Russia right up to the Ural Mountains.

Even in an expensive medical clinic, Muscovites risk receiving treatment from nurses who have not learned how to hook up an intravenous drip.

Municipal plumbers spend two months fixing a leak in your plumbing, but in the end you are forced to take a wrench in hand and become something of a plumber yourself.

In at least five out of 10 cases, consumers receive inferior goods or services, or else the products themselves are fine but the delivery or sales process is so bad that it is simpler to do without them.

The bricklayer who perfectly restored the fireplace at my dacha went on such a drinking binge with the down payment I gave him that he was physically unable not only to haul away the debris from the job, but even to pick up the rest of the money I owed him.

For some unknown reason, the private clinic where my wife sees a highly qualified medical specialist creates such horrendous lines and obstacles when issuing basic medical documents that she ultimately had to seek treatment elsewhere.

The objective state of everyday reality in the Russian capital only makes observers smile whenever a senior official — who finds it increasingly difficult to hide his frustration over the falling ruble and oil prices — publicly tries to persuade investors not to cancel their projects in Russia. Promising market conditions were the only thing that attracted that venture capital in the first place. When those disappeared, so did their passing interest in this vast, ethnographically interesting but enormously inconvenient and monstrously inefficient country.

Those Russians who still don’t have citizenship in some other country or a one-way ticket out of here have no choice but to think deeply about what it would take to rectify the shortcomings of a social system that is breaking down before their eyes.

Of course, the prospects for resolving these problems look even less appealing than any of the authoritarian experiments yet implemented by President Vladimir Putin’s administration. A few years back, then-President Dmitry Medvedev and U.S. President Barack Obama pressed a button to symbolically “reset” U.S.-Russian relations. However, in a Freudian slip, the Russian version of the word was written as “reload” — an action more fitting for a rifle than a computer.

The real question is: Who will reset Russia’s social system? Obviously, not the current administration. Any change of administration — even according to the time frame and procedures stipulated in the Constitution — can evoke many fears and questions. That is true of any major change.

However, in the life of any country, a situation can arise that requires a clear choice between positive change or stagnation and decline. At such times, only the collective will of the people can generate sufficient will to begin the process of change. And yes, sometimes the awakening of national consciousness begins with struggling over a mountain of dirty and snowy slush on the side of the road.

Change always involves risk. What begins as reform often ends in revolution. The whole world knows — from Ferguson to Kiev. And changes always come as a surprise. Did we know one year ago how the world would look in December 2014? And one year from now, the world will look just as different.

A hundred years ago in 1914, the world also changed beyond recognition. The long period without war during which borders seemed to disappear and the prospects for economic development and social progress seemed limitless ended abruptly in the trenches of Belgium and western Ukraine.

The current long period of relative peace also seems to be coming to an end under the roar of mortar fire in Donetsk, Gaza and Kobani. We must all make a supreme effort to ensure that the winds of change — sometimes gaining hurricane force — do not destroy all that humanity has built during the quiet years, and that we do not ourselves get buried under the rubble of political and social edifices that rightfully deserve to crumble and fall.

Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

How to Make Anger Your Friend

If you let it, anger will be your true friend and ally.

2014-12-15-leo350690_640.jpg

Throughout our lives, we learn that anger is an inappropriate, unattractive, destructive emotion. But, in reality it can be a powerful force for good.

Anger is a messenger and a motivator.

It lets you know when someone has violated your boundaries and gives you the energy to act when something needs to change.

Anger is only a problem when it’s stifled and ignored, leading to explosive outbursts or depression, and increasing the risk for health problems like heart attacks.

Here’s a way to use anger to improve your life, your health, and the world:

First, practice paying attention.

  • Notice your emotions throughout the day and thank them for bringing you messages.
  • When you realize you’re angry, listen to your anger. Let it make you curious. Why am I angry? What’s going on in my life that’s causing this?
  • Determine if someone or something has violated your boundaries, or if the anger is inviting you to make a change (or both).

A.) If your boundaries have been violated…

Has someone asked too much of you? Is someone standing too close? Have they disturbed your equilibrium? Taken to much of your time?

Is someone all up in your business?

2014-12-15-polarbear196317_640.jpg

This discomfort lets you know that someone’s in your space and helps you maintain your boundaries.

You can…

… Speak up! Talk about how it’s making you feel. This isn’t necessarily about making someone wrong, it’s more about understanding your needs. (So, feel free to stick to “I” statements — “I feel overwhelmed,” “I’m uncomfortable,” etc.)

… Make a change. Don’t answer the phone when it rings (you can call people back when you want to), start saying no to commitments that don’t interest you, take some time to focus on you. In short, draw clear boundaries with your behavior.

… Adapt. Notice your own habits. Is that person really out of line, or are you being a bit rigid in your thinking? You may realize you’re being territorial about something unnecessary.  In this case, decide whether you need to ask others to change, or if this one’s on you.

… Move away. If the person violating your space is not your friend, co-worker or acquaintance, sometimes the best thing to do is just get out of there.

B.) When Anger is a motivator…

Do you find that you’re angry throughout the workday? Did an interaction you saw on the street rub you the wrong way? Are you sick of sitting inside all the time?

Anger can tell you that something in your life or in the world needs to change. It can let you know that it’s time to switch it up, alter your lifestyle, or move to another city. It can also alert you to the presence of injustice.

This type of anger is urging you to move, change, act.

Though they were pacifists, I’m sure you can believe that Ghandi got angry, that Rev. MLK got angry, that Maya Angelou got angry, and that this anger is part of what motivated them to work for greater justice in the world.

2014-12-15-speech67628_640.jpg

If you find you’re experiencing this type of anger, do your best to take action.

Make a move toward changing the situation:

  • Talk to your friends about leaving your job.
  • Plant a small garden on your porch.
  • Get involved with an organization that fights injustice.

Take whatever action works toward the needed change.

C.) If worse comes to worse…

If worse comes to worse and you can’t find a creative or beneficial outlet for your feelings…

… Move around! Go for a run, write down everything on your mind, dance it out. Make sure to get it all out of your system.

This will, at the very least, keep the anger from getting stuck in your body and making you sick.

2014-12-15-coronado16054_640.jpg

I hope you find this information helpful when you need it. If you get in the habit of noticing your anger, and using it to spur change, you’ll have a new friend for life.

Can you remember a time when anger helped you make a positive change in your life, your health, or the world? Inspire us by sharing in the comments below.

6 Tips for Recovery From Mental Illness

Over the course of this illness known as schizophrenia, I’ve developed a number of talents, like how to stay away from people. I retreat into the recesses of my mind, inside the house I own. Personally, I do it because I feel safe, and to add a mixture of perceived humbleness. I feel a bit more humble living in a house all alone. The only wish I have is that it had a view. Maybe a canyon or two in the distance or an ocean. I couldn’t care either way about which kind of view.

Over the years, I’ve felt for too long that one day I will die from myself. That I would do something so catastrophic that it would necessitate my death. I feel this is something many schizophrenics live with. They’re afraid to get on the medicine for delusional reasons, then once they’re on it for a number of years (six in my case), they’re afraid something may happen where they’ll forget their medicine and end up like the stereotypical schizophrenic — dead, alone and having done something horrible. Only one is usually accomplished: being alone.

The plight of the schizophrenic and those with severe mental illness is one which would not be wished on someone’s worst enemy. Generally, we keep to ourselves and keep our sanity in check constantly, as we’re afraid we’ll lose it like we’ve misplaced our favorite coffee mug.

Schizophrenics and those with severe mental illness are strong individuals, because they’ve had to face the worse, beat the odds, which were mightily stacked against them, and have come out on top in some cases. This is the case with myself and I’m reminded of it daily. There were days when I couldn’t even think or do an activity without facing some type of delusion.

If you want to imagine what it’s like being schizophrenic, imagine yourself surrounded by thoughts that have no realistic grounding in reality, and then imagine that all those thoughts are real. Complicate it further with visual or auditory hallucinations. Even if you try, you can’t imagine it.

If you tried that, now you can try these six tips to live a better, healthier life that I’ve learned along my journey with mental illness.

1. Always be kind.
This was the hardest for me to learn. I hated friends and their successes because I hated my life. I said things that couldn’t be forgiven, just to show someone how much I was unhappy with myself and my lot in life. Don’t be that guy.

2. Always be patient with yourself.
Another tough lesson. Being patient with yourself means understanding that you have difficulties but you have more successes than failures. Always remember the successes no matter how insignificant your mind tells you they are. They are not insignificant! Even the smallest success is success.

3. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Sweating the small stuff is only going to make your life more difficult. Learn from mistakes, don’t repeat them, and carry on.

4. Enjoy the present.
Enjoying the present is one of the most difficult lessons for all people. Be in the moment. No one ever looked back on life and said, “If only I had worked more.”

5. Forget the past but learn from it.
Forgetting the past is difficult. It always creeps up from the crevices of your mind. Forget it, learn from it and carry on.

6. Be yourself.
Being yourself is the greatest gift you can give. Be open with yourself, work on your problems, and most importantly just be you. People will love you or hate you. It’s not your place to wonder why or care if people hate you. Always, always be yourself.

New Recommendations to End Pirate Fishing and Seafood Fraud

Photo of seafood vendor

Seafood fraud can happen at any point in the supply chain, undermining law-abiding fishers and misleading consumers. (Photo credit: NOAA)

America’s fisheries drive coastal economies and put food on the tables of families across the country. Unfortunately, the twin global issues of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and seafood fraud undermine the economic and environmental sustainability of fisheries and fish stocks.

Global losses attributable to IUU fishing are estimated at $ 10 billion to $ 23 billion annually. Pirate fishing vessels take in fish without regard to the sustainability of ocean ecosystems. Not required to file trip plans or carry transponders, the ships roam the oceans in the shadows and become vectors for human, drug, and arms trafficking. Black-market fishing distorts legal markets and displaces law-abiding fishermen, ultimately serving as a drag on the global economy. These challenges can be compounded by seafood fraud — the mislabeling, misbranding, or falsification of product origins — which can occur at any point in the supply chain.

Today, the federal task force on combatting IUU fishing and seafood fraud released its final recommendations to tackle these complex challenges. President Obama announced the creation of the task force at the State Department’s Our Ocean conference in June, and for the last six months, under the leadership of NOAA Administrator Kathy Sullivan and Under Secretary of State Cathy Novelli, representatives from 14 agencies have come together to answer the President’s call to action.

My Country ‘Tis of Thee

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From ev’ry mountainside
Let freedom ring!

“In October 2003, the CIA interrogated Arsala Khan, an Afghan national in his mid-fifties who was believed to have assisted Usama bin Laden in his escape through the Tora Bora Mountains in late 2001. After 56 huors of standing sleep deprivation, Arsala Khan was described as barely able to enunciate, and being ‘visibly shaken by his hallucinations depicting dogs mauling and killing his sons and family.’ According to CIA cables, Arsala Khan ‘stated that [the interrogator] was responsible for killing them and feeding them to them.”

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.

“Later that same day, Majid Khan’s ‘lunch tray,’ consisting of hummus, pasta with sauce, nuts, and raisins, was ‘pureed’ and rectally infused. Additional sessions of rectal feeding and hydration followed. In addition to his hunger strikes, Majid Khan engaged in acts of self-harm that included attempting to cut his wrists on two occasions, an attempt to chew into his arm at the inner elbow, an attempt to cut a vein in the top of his foot, and an attempt to cut into his skin at the elbow joint using a filed toothbrush.”*

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom’s song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

“Arsala Khan was subsequently allowed to sleep. Two days later, however, the interrogators returned him to standing sleep deprivation. After subjecting Khan to 21 additional hours of sleep deprivation, interrogators stopped using the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques ‘[d]ue to lack of information from [Arsala Khan] pinning him directly to recent activity.’”*

Our fathers’ God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom’s holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.

“After approximately a month of detention and the extensive use of the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques on Arsala Khan, the CIA concluded that the ‘detainee Arsala Khan does not appear to be the subject involved in… current plans or activities against U.S. personnel or facilities,’ and recommended that he be released to his village with a cash payment. CIA interrogators at DETENTION SITE COBALT instead transferred him to U.S. military custody, where he was held for an additional four years despite the development of significant intelligence indicating that the source who reported that Arsala Khan had aided Usama bin Laden had a vendetta against Arsala Khan’s family.”*

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;

http://www.acrx.org -As millions of Americans strive to deal with the economic downturn, loss of jobs, foreclosures, high cost of gas,and the rising cost of prescription drug cost. Charles Myrick ,the President of American Consultants Rx, announced the re-release of the American Consultants Rx community service project which consist of millions of free discount prescription cards being donated to thousands of not for profits, hospitals, schools, churches, etc. in an effort to assist the uninsured, under insured, and seniors deal with the high cost of prescription drugs.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

How to Start Healing After Betrayal | The Rob Bell Show | Oprah Winfrey Network

Tune in Sunday, December 21, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

It can be difficult to come to terms with the hellishness of betrayal and abuse, especially if it was inflicted by a friend or family member, says progressive spiritual leader Rob Bell. There is a way, however, to begin the healing process, he says.

“If you want to take part in the reconciliation of all things, you have to name it,” Rob says. “You will only move to a place of healing and wholeness when you are ready to say what it actually was.”

Watch the video above to find out how Rob thinks we can learn to accept our most painful experiences.

5 Ways to Communicate Directly and Effectively

I’m always entreating you guys to express yourselves directly to your spouses about everything from housework to childcare to therapy to sex.  I’ve even humorously told you what not to do when expressing yourself.  But in case you still are having difficulty with saying exactly what you mean, here is a quick and dirty cheat sheet on communication that isn’t passive aggressive or vague. Expressing yourself directly, non-attackingly, and non-defensively gives you the best chance of being heard, having a meaningful conversation, and ensuring that the same interactions don’t keep recurring endlessly in the future. So let’s learn the steps.

1.  Use “I feel” statements.

Example: “I feel sad when you say I gained weight.”

Not: “You’re so mean. I can’t believe you said that.”

Only “I feel,” and then the third word needs to be an adjective emotion word, like “sad,” “angry,” hurt,” etc.  Here’s a list of emotion words to help.

2. When describing what the other person did that upset you, use only objective language, no interpretations or value judgments.

Describe their behavior like an objective bystander would report on it if they saw it on video, without condemning or criticizing.

Example: “I felt hurt when you laughed when I said I was tired.”

Not: “What the hell?  I was up five times last night?  You think just because I don’t work outside the home that nothing I do is hard.”

3. Empathize with their perspective.

Genuinely make a concerted effort NOT to take your partner’s perspective personally, and instead, to be genuinely curious about their point of view.  Further, unless they are outright saying they don’t love you, don’t interpret their words to mean this.  Try to view their behavior through a positive and not a negative lens.

Example: “I get that you were trying to say that you think I look fine no matter what I wear, but when I asked which dress you liked and you said you didn’t care, I felt disappointed.” (That’s putting all of the three preceding steps together; it also shows you that the order of the steps can vary.)

Not: “What kind of a man doesn’t even care what his wife looks like?  Joe always tells Liz which of her outfits he likes best and that’s probably why they seem happier than we do.”

4. Self-reflect.

Explain why a specific behavior may have triggered you, by relating what just happened to your own upbringing, prior to your spouse coming onto the scene.  According to imago and attachment theories, we are drawn to what is familiar and then we try to change it to make it what we always wanted (e.g., you unconsciously choose a cold/avoidant partner because your mom was cold/avoidant and then you devote your life to trying to make your partner warm and attentive, by nagging and pursuing him and other strategies that work terribly). This step is the game-changer, and can make an empty-feeling interaction into one where your partner actually becomes interested and engaged in learning more about you.

Example:“I think I am particularly sensitive to you saying you need time away from me because my dad always was trying to peel me off of him so he could go to his office and work.  Intellectually, I understand that we need time apart from each other, but it still hurts to hear you say it.”  (This time you combined self-reflection and empathy.)

Not: “Any woman would hate to hear that her husband needs time away!”

5. Ask for your needs to be met in a reasonable, concrete way in the future.

Tell your spouse exactly what would make you feel loved/heard/appreciated/understood in situations like this when they come up again, and why this would work.

Example: “I would really appreciate if you would hold me close and tell me that you love me before telling me that you need to be gone for a work trip.  That would make me feel better and more reassured.”

Not: “You should know that’s not how to tell me you need to be gone for a week!”

So, let’s put it all together.

Example:You got your hair cut and are insecure about how it looks.  Your husband comes home and says, “Whoa!  Big change!”  You burst into tears and tell him he’s a jerk.  Marriage fail.  Now let’s use our new skills….

You: Hey, I felt sad when you said “Whoa!  Big change!”  It made me feel like you hate my hair and you think I’m ugly.

Husband: Sorry.

You: Well, I get that it’s a big change, for sure… but honestly, I am feeling pretty insecure about it and it’s bringing up my insecurity issues from when I was younger, when I was overweight and my parents made all kinds of passive aggressive comments about me needing to lose weight.

Husband: Well, I didn’t mean to do that.  I mean, honestly, you know I like it long, but I can get used to this.  I always think you’re hot anyway.

You: Okay.  Well, next time if I do something you don’t like with my looks, can you start with saying something extra nice before you tell me what you think?

Husband: Like I still like your ass?

You: Yeah, okay.

While you’re still not making out passionately, you’re also not hysterically crying and texting your best friends that your husband is a jerk, so this is a win.  Further, you made your point known, your husband doesn’t feel like you’re out to get him, and it is possible that this interaction may go better in the future.

Practice makes perfect, so go directly express your feelings today!  Right now!  Go!

Potato Pancakes, Family Tradition and Mindfulness in Everyday Life

Candles lit on the dining room table, chatter of grownups talking, peals of laughter echoing through the house, the delicious scent of potato pancakes frying in the kitchen where my mother and grandmother stand over the hot stove.

I remember being 7 years old, wearing a party dress with wool tights and shiny black Mary Jane’s. It is Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights. Everything feels special, and it seems all is right in the world. Like a mother smoothing a baby’s blanket, peace settles over our home. These are memorable holiday moments for a young child. It is through such experiences that we learn who we are, based on innocent discoveries of where we came from. As the little girl at those gathering, I closely observed my aunts and uncles, my grandparents, and my own parents, and felt, albeit unconsciously, a profound connection to relatives who came before me and the link to their ancestors: my mother’s mother, my father’s father and those who came before him.

Understanding that I do not live in a vacuum, that this period of time right now is connected to all other periods of time — those that preceded me and those that will come after — I become part of something larger than myself, part of the eternal mystery, taking my place in the ever-growing fabric of life itself. And it is during the holidays that our unique cultural traditions have the greatest potential to help in this process of self-definition, well being, and cultivating an all-important sense of belonging and clear perspective of our place in the world.

Fiddler on the Roof is the story of a Russian family forced to flee its homeland. In the song “Tradition,” Tevye, the wise father, says that without our traditions, the community of mankind would lose its grounding. “Because of our traditions,” Tevye sings, “we’ve kept our balance for many, many years … and because of our traditions, every one of us knows who he is and what God expects him to do.” Our traditions act as a compass for all of our human relationships and personal interactions, the qualitative experiences of our family life, and ultimately, the development of civilized societies themselves. As we honor all traditions, so we learn to honor ourselves, and in the final analysis, each other.

What makes something a tradition is that it is handed down from one generation to the next, creating a living, dynamic flow of rhythm and predictability — like young children in the family kitchen watching their mother and grandmother cook, discerning how to take their place within the arc of a meaningful legacy. It is critical for children to be a part of family traditions. It connects them to that greater whole and leads to heightened empathy, a more fulfilling happiness and the development of engaged citizenship. In the same way that composer Leonard Bernstein described the composition of music as “… one note that follows another with complete inevitability … something is right in the world … something we can trust that will never let us down,” we count on traditions, like a melody, for that same dependable and predictable outcome. While filmmaker Woody Allen points out in Deconstructing Harry, that tradition gives us only “the illusion of permanence,” predictability nonetheless gives us comfort in an otherwise shaky, unknowable world.

Marriage, Sunday football, Halloween, religious holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations — there is little that is not tradition when it comes right down to it. Yet, while we hold old traditions dear, it can be dangerous and downright dogmatic to eschew new ways of looking at things in the name of grasping after traditions that have become outdated. We must be all the while open to the creation of new ones. As author and lecturer Ardis Whitman wrote, “We must cherish our yesterdays, but never carry them as a burden into the future. Each generation must take nourishment from the other and give knowledge to the one that comes after.”

We need our traditions and they are emotionally, mentally, and spiritually healthy for us. Part of the responsibility of getting the chance to live at all — should we choose to look at it that way — is to be able to be a part of the transmission of our particular family and ethnic customs. In so doing, we honor past generations by passing on their rites and rituals to the next generation. In this way, our family lineages stay stable and strong. Since ceremonies and traditions outlive us, they make us feel part of that larger sense of things as we pass them down to our own children, and theirs. This is how we actually realize our immortality — not in living forever, but in being part of ongoing living traditions. And without them, perhaps Tevye is right. “Without our traditions,” he says in this famous Broadway lyric, “our lives would be as shaky as … a fiddler on the roof.”

I am 17 years old and visiting my grandmother in her Miami Beach apartment. The sun is setting on a clear December night, and we are sitting in her kitchen grating potatoes and talking about her life back in Russia, before she escaped the same life the character Tevye lived, and made her way to America. My grandmother’s hair is grey and pulled back in a tight bun. She wears a flowered apron with big front pockets. I am a freckle-faced college student in cutoff jeans. Mindfully, I watch her take eggs, matzo meal, potato gratings and seasoning and form the mixture into potato latkes as we talk about her parents, the Bolsheviks, the faraway times of her youth. Oil sizzles on the hot stove behind us. Aware of my role in the arc of experience, I watch my grandmother carefully prepare the Hannukah treat, and learn.

Nana Rose’s Potato Pancakes (Latkes)

Ingredients
4 large potatoes
1/2 small Vidalia onion
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons matzo meal or all-purpose flour
ground black pepper to taste
Canola oil for frying

Directions
Grate potatoes and onion into a large bowl. Drain off excess liquid. Soak up extra liquid by taking layers of paper towel and pressing down on potato gratings. Throw out paper towel.

Mix egg, salt, and black pepper into grated potatoes and onion. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of matzo meal or flour to make mixture thick. Heat oven to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C).

In the bottom of a heavy skillet or frying pan, heat 1/4 inch oil over medium high heat. Place two or three 1/4 cup spoonfuls of potato mixture into the hot oil, and flatten to make 1/2 inch thick pancakes. Fry until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper grocery bags. Salt to taste. Repeat until all potato mixture is used. Keep pancakes warm in low oven.

Serve with applesauce and sour cream.
